If Your Body Is Making Anti-Gliadin Antibodies, Doesn't That Mean You're Gluten Sensitive?

Hi Gatita,

You may want to check with your lab to see what they mean by anti-gliadin antibodies....my recent labs were done through LabCorp through my M.D.s office and the results which were reported as anti-gliadin antibodies were actually DGP antibodies (as if things weren't confusing enough at baseline). So, perhaps you did actually have the right tests done.

Alas, no, it was not DGP...

Not to worry - I cannot recall your serology - but I think you have improved gluten-free? Blood data is good to have - yet is not the end of the equation.

Hang in - it does get better :)

I think Mushroom means there are many forms of Gluten Intolerance -- one being Celiac Disease and I agree.

I'm posting this because my understanding on the topic has evolved and I wanted to post an update. I've been thinking about autoimmunity for some time. I've had this question floating around in my head: "If you're body makes any autoantibodies at all, doesn't that mean there is an antigen somewhere in your diet or environment that you need to be avoiding? Doesn't it mean that your immune response is confused? Is it true that the body should not make any autoantibodies at all? Is there any reason why the body should need to make them?"


The answer to this seems intuitive. Autoantibodies are antibodies that kill off your own body's cells. Well, someone somewhere (I thought it was this thread but I guess I was wrong) made a statement. He/she said: "I think that autoantibodoes are part of the body cleaning out dead cells."

That made some sense to me for a while, until I looked further into it today. It turns out that the "cleaning out of dead cells" in the body is called apoptosis and is done by phagoycites. I read this on wikipedia: "The removal of dying cells by phagocytes occurs in an orderly manner without eliciting an inflammatory response."


So this means that the body's immune response is not activated or involved in "cleaning out the body's dead cells (housecleaning)." This implies that autoantibodies are not produced for the purpose of housecleaning.


Is there any reason that the body would need to produce autoantibodies? Or does any (no matter how small) amount of production of autoantibodies mean that the immune system is confused?


And is there a way to "fix" the confused immune system so that it can once again tell the difference between self cells and non-self cells?

    • I have seen info that children's antibodies can drop very quickly.  The lucky little guys!
    • I think if you search through this section of the forum, you will find that many children see a quick drop in their antibodies.  Recovery can come fast or slow  in both kids and adults.  We are all different!   I can tell you that my antibodies are still high, yet I had a repeat biopsy done last week showing healthy villi (Marsh Stage IIIB at diagnosis five years ago).  So, here I was beating myself up for having elevated antibodies which made it look as if I was not diet compliant, and I was actually healed.  Researchers  have not done a lot of studies about repeating the antibodies tests after diagnosis to monitor progress (lack of funding for sure).  Repeat antibodies testing is not perfect, but it is the only tool in the box right now.   We suspect my antibodies (DGP IgA only positive on the panel ever)  are up for other reasons (e.g. my Hashimoto’s, another AI issue, residuals from a previous gluten exposure).   I do have symptoms but these were attributed to other  things including chronic gastritis which, since I do not have active celiac disease, h. Pylori, drink alcohol, and am allergic to NSAIDs and other meds, is probable autoimmune.   Great job on keeping him safe!  I am glad he is feeling better.  He is seeing results from the diet which helps confirm the diagnosis.    Systemic issues can take longer to heal, so just keep moving forward.  
    • Magnesium, B-vitamins, Vitamin D etc. Should probably be supplemented. For the fog, stress, brain issues I swear by my regime of Liquid Health Stress & Energy, and Liquid Health Neurlogical support 1tbsp each 3 times a day in a beverage before a meal. Works wonders, magnesium is also wonderful, you did not mention constipation or D so I do not know which is best for you. There is Doctors best and Natural Vitality, Doctors best works great for relaxing and is easy on the gut but Natural Vitality is easier absorbed but can be harsh on the gut, it also is great for constipation. Doctors you dose as it tells you, Natural Vitality, you start off at 1/4 tsp and up it slowly to full dose over 1-2 weeks.
      Liquid Health also makes Vitamin D3 in a sublingual form. ALL of these can be found on Luckyvitamin.com and on Amazon.
      These will help with you fog, and anxiety.
    • Our 6 year olds Iga test came back over >100 last May. We had him tested because he was thin, had dropped down in his weight charts and was losing his hair! He was also suffering from miscellaneous aches and pains. We immediately eliminated gluten and with only a few screw ups, 6 months later his level was 4! The doctor is astonished at how rapidly it decreased, and is questioning whether he has celiac or not. (has not had a biopsy, as they are so invasive and the testing is so accurate these days.) His hair is thicker and he has gone up in weight 5%, and doesn't complain as much about leg pains or aches.  Has anyone else's child recovered this fast? Could something else be going on? His thyroid tests are normal, so the plan for now is to keep doing what we are doing and re-test both Iga and thyroid in the spring.  thanks for any help!!  
    • I too have a servere but  Of D. Lasting over 2 weeks I will try to find thisproduct. Like you nothing works. I am trying FiberCon says only take for 9 days. Feeling somewhat  better. Thank you for your info.ism welling  to try anything..
