A Cautionary Tale: Symptoms Are Not Always From Gluten

I am writing with a cautionary tale. When those of us with food sensitivities have a GI problem, our celiac/gluten sensitivity, lactose intolerance, etc are almost always the first thing we go to. For over a two year period I had become convinced that my gluten sensitivity was becoming worse and worse. By November of 2012 I was having episodes of severe pain in my upper abdomen that also were accompanied by fever and chills. (It had been about 20 years since I'd last had a temperature over 100°). I was starting to make absurd conclusions about where the gluten was coming from (given how strict I've been with my gluten-free diet for over 3 years--I am very very strict). Absent any reasonable gluten sources, I began suspecting I'd developed sensitivity to corn or soy. But the events seemed unrelated to my consumption of those substances.

After an emergency room visit at the end of December and, and a miserable January, I finally got in to see an insightful GI doc, we began looking for other explanations. He scheduled some tests right away including an ultrasound (came back negative for disease or injury), and a CT scan with contrast dye and barium "smoothie". Much to my shock the radiologists found a tennis-ball sized mass in my mesentery. I am just recovering from the biopsy today to determine if it is malignant, but either way it will have to come out.

So my recommendation is that, along with the usual questions about whether it might be another food sensitivity, it is very well to consider that if your symptoms become increasingly or inexplicably worse, it may be worth asking your doctor to do a thorough exam for other possibilities. Especially if they are accompanied by chills or fever.

Oh my, how scary. I sure hope you get good news from the biopsy!

Thank you so much for the cautionary message....You are so right, I think it's often too easy to assume our gluten troubles are the cause of all our problems.

Yeah this is why I had major testing done before falling on food allergies.Blood tests galore,MRI,echo scan of abdomin and kidneys etc ,came back neg.I truely hope the best for you and a speedy recovery

    • Tell me about it, when you can not eat meats, and a bunch of other things, it becomes really quite annoying getting the optimal fat/protein ratios. The amount of nuts, seeds, and vegan protein powders I go through is crazy. Diet cost me over $600 a month for a single male at 125-128lbs and 5' 11"
    • Hi Ennis_TX I just looked around that site and already saw several things I want to try. I really want to try hemp seeds. I'm gonna try ordering a few things on there. I really need something to snack on and add to salads and stuff. Thanks so much.
    • I'm a gluten-free vegetarian. That being said I was taking prednisone for 2 months (unrelated to my celiac) and got a diet a friend was doing and tried it to lose the 10 lbs I gained from the steroid.  I ate eggs for breakfast, hard boiled or an omelet. I had a salad with Beyond Meat Chicken (fake) for lunch and soup I made with some veggies and tofu for dinner.  My brain fog was quite a bit less and I had crazy amounts of energy. Being a vegetarian I just can't eat that way all the time.  Susan
    • https://www.mygerbs.com/   Has a bunch of seeds, dried fruit, etc. that are gluten-free and free of all major allergens. I love the deep nutty crunch of the hemp seeds, and the pumpkin seeds. I eat them shell on whole, plenty of fiber, they also sell shelled versions of them and even sunflower, chia, and flax.
    • Welcome to the board. It is too bad your 'doctor' didn't test you for celiac before telling you to go gluten free.  Since he was neglectful in that respect chances are he didn't tell you all you need to do to keep yourself safe IF you have celiac.  Since you have children and celiac is hereditary you should consider going back to eating gluten and getting tested.  Chances are good that you are not as gluten free as you think you may be and that would be what causes you to still have periodic issues.  That is especially the case if you have other folks in your home that are still eating gluten.  It was very irresponsible of your doctor to simply tell you to go gluten free without testing and giving you the full info after diagnosis to keep you safe.  He virtually guarenteed that you will still have periodic issues so he could charge you for an 'allergy' test . As other posters mentioned the results of that allergy testing are very strange and IMHO should be ignored for now.  Please consider going back on gluten, a couple slices of bread a day should be enough, and get tested by a real MD in a couple months. Meanwhile do read the Newbie 101 thread so that you will know what you need to do to keep yourself safe if those tests come back positive. Also be very cautious with any herbals or supplements that 'doctor' may have prescribed.
