  1. What is it with MIL's? lol, My MIL tried to pull the same kind of thing for my baby shower. I threw a FIT. It's YOUR DAY. People are not doing you some gigantic favor by accomodating your medical needs. My MIL was insisting we have my baby shower in a traditional Italian restaurant (they are not italian) where I could eat nothing. I called my husband in tears and he dealt with her. We are now having my baby shower at my moms. The food is still an uphill battle and i will probably wind up making all of it myself to ensure that it is gluten-free.

  2. Hey Everyone,

I was hoping you all can help. I am almost 7 months pregnant and I am having my baby shower in a few weeks. I really have not done any gluten-free entertaining at all since I have been diagnosed. My sister in law is throwing the shower and we are having it at my moms. Neither my sis in law nor my mom are familiar with gluten-free cooking. My mom seems to believe I do not really even need to be gluten-free since its such an inconvenience to her.

It seems like the pervailing idea among my family is that we will have one thing I can eat and then it'll be gluten-palooza for everyone else. Now if it was someone elses shower I wouldn't care. Since it is my shower I think it's fair that I should be able to eat all of the food served. Since my family is not really on board I am just going to do all of the cooking myself in my gluten-free kitchen. That's where you guys come in. I need ideas for fun party food that is 100% gluten-free.

Any fun gluten-free party food ideas? I really need your help! Does anyone have gluten-free hors d'oervues they really like? gluten-free appetizers? Finger food?

    let me know!

  3. I have been charting and all of my signs look like I could really be pregnant :D and I have read that the first 3 weeks are the most important for things like no alcohol and taking vitamins. I think I am only about a week along. Any tips?? Thanks ya'll, and here's crossing my fingers that I am pregnant, and not being crazy over here......

    Congratulations! I charted too!

I am now 22 weeks pregnant but I remember being where you are very well. :) I was super super sick my first trimester. It's hard being a pregnant celiac since all you hear is "have a cracker, it'll help!" Definitely get on a prenate asap. Also make sure to always keep something in your stomach. My first trimester I was all about ginger ale and rice crackers. I could barely eat anything but the less you eat the sicker you get. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions! I had so many questions when i got pregnant!

  4. Does anyone live in or around the DC area? I want to send her to someone good so the test gets performed properly and the doctor actually knows how to interpret the results (my doctor in NY was completely clueless) She's been very sick lately and I'm worried about her. Can anyone help?

  5. One reason I am trying to push the issue is that I am five months pregnant and my baby shower will be in November. My horrible mother in law wanted to have it in a regular italian restaurant where I could eat nothing. My mom offered to host the shower at her house so I thought it was ok but now it's an issue since she doesn't seem to get that I need to be off gluten and she thinks its unreasonable of me to expect people who are bringing food to bring gluten-free food. (We got into a huge fight over this)

  6. Have you tried giving her written information about the dangers of untreated celiac -- the cancer, the osteoporosis, and all the rest? If yes, then you have done all you can. All I can think then is that she is either supremely self-centered (is it inconvenience to her or to you?) or she cares so deeply about you that she can't absorb that there is anything permanently wrong with you. If it is a problem with denial as in one stage of mourning, then maybe there is hope that she will get it.

    I wish you luck.

It's an inconvenience to her. I am going over to her house for dinner tonight and I tried to be very clear about what i could and could not eat. She was going to make this one dish and it didn't even occur to her to look at the ingredients. I had her read them to me over the phone, what was one of the ingredients "wheat gluten"! I mean seriously, I don't ask for alot but if you don't even know not to make me something where gluten is clearly an ingredient than I don't know what else to do. That's when she got annoyed and told me how inconvenient this all was. Gee I am so sorry that my not getting violently ill for days on end and compromising my immune system is inconvenient.

  7. I don't know what to do anymore about my mom. I have explained how serious Celiac is till I was blue in the face. She keeps telling me to go back on gluten since living gluten-free is just so "inconvenient" like this is just some fad diet. She has absolutely no recollection of how sick I used to be and no recognition of how much better I am now. Is there anything to do with people like this? Will they ever get it or should I just give up?

  8. Hi!

For something not too expensive and pretty main stream, try Mangiano's. I always stayed away from this place because its a pasta chain so obviously gluten heavy. But when I went there to eat for a work lunch, I was pleasantly suprised that they offered gluten free pasta and a list of sauces I could and could not have. They brought out a salad just for me with only olive oil and vinegar, instead of sharing the community salad everyone else had. I choose the gluten-free pasta with this primavera sauce. And then for dessert, they brought me a creme brulee and I hadnt even ordered it yet! The portions were huge and lasted me for two more meals after. It's located right downtown near the Park Plaza Hotel. You can take the Boylston or Arlington T stops on the Green Line. Buono Appetito!

I love italian! Do they have a special gluten-free menu? Do you have to tell them you have Celiac when you make the reservation?

  9. So I had my craving again yesterday and decided to be pro-active and make some flourless cookies. They come out much better than any of the gluten-free versions of normal cookies that I have tried. I found the recipe on Epicurious.com. Even the gluten fanatics in my office are crazy about them. If anyone wants the recipe I would be happy to post. I should mention, they are peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. I know alot of people on here have lots of allergies (myself included, but for me peanuts are not one of them)

  10. I'm not sure if everyone saw the previous post about this. A bunch of us were going to wear green today, the official color of celiac awareness, in a tribute to Bette Hagman who passed away this week. I tried to get my non-celiac friends and family to wear green today to no avail. I guess if you don't actually have celiac you don't realize what a big deal it is. My husband is wearing a green shirt because he wouldn't dare not to. :) Throw on something green today, a shirt, hat, necklace, etc and promote celiac awareness!

  11. Today I had some Whole Foods sushi (Salmon Avocado roll). I had some of the wasabi and my own San-J soy sauce (gluten free). Almost immediately after eating the sushi my stomach started gurgling. This is the main symptom that has become much better since I went gluten free a month ago. So I'm wondering if maybe the sushi or the wasabi isn't gluten free?

The ingredient list is confusing, and I thought if I avoided the soy sauce I would be fine. Then I found this thread which says that Whole Foods puts soy sauce in the sushi itself? Open Original Shared Link Does anyone know if this is true?

The EXACT SAME THING happened to me also with the salmon avocado roll. I checked the ingredients religiously and absolutely nothing contained gluten except for the soy sauce which I never use. I wish I had an answer for you but there must be something in that roll that is making people sick.

  12. Be very careful at PF Changs. I used to go once a week but had such a bad experience on Friday night I refuse to go back. To make a long story short, I ordered the gluten-free singapore street noodles off of the gluten-free menu and they brought me the gluten version. I even confirmed with the server when he brought the noodles that they were gluten free and he said they were. I could tell they were not gluten free since they had some fried stuff on top which I have never seen on the gluten free version. I got my waitress and she confirmed with the kitchen that the dish was NOT gluten free. I complained to the manager. I wasn't mean or rude but I said I very narrowly avoided getting EXTREMELY sick. I can now no longer trust them when they bring me a dish and claim it is gluten free since apparently that means nothing. If the gluten had not been so blatently obvious I would still be doubled over sick from my meal on Friday. Since I am pregnant I am risking more than my own health right now so I just can't take the chance of eating there again. :(

  13. I actually came on here to vent about my gluten craving and found this thread. :) I am 16 weeks pregnant and have such a strong craving for a glazed doughnut I am practically in pain. I am so jealous of non-celiac pregos right now my heart hurts.

  14. One of my guilty pleasures is watching Top Chef. I love all the drama and the foofy food they turn out. I think we could use this show to promote celiac awareness. Here is my idea. One of the challenges should be to create a delicious, allergen free meal. The chefs get a whole kitchen full of stuff to create a delicious meal, but they have to do it without using any of the top 8 allergens. To make it more challenging, some of the ingredients provided should contain hidden sources of the allergens (like soy sauce). The food could be tested for the presence of the allergens before it was judged. I think this would really help people understand about CC and label reading and things like that.

I don't know if they would ever do a show like this, but I think it would have universal appeal since allergies and intollerances are more in the news lately.

    What do you all think?

Omg that would be awesome!! You should write the show and suggest it! I mentioned to my husband that I had starting watching the show and the first thing he asked me was "do they have anything on there you can eat?" :)

  15. Thanks so much for all your advice! I am completely gluten free. Yesterday I had something for lunch that I have had a few times before but I guess this time it was contaminated with gluten :( I actually didn't have that much since I got so sick so fast. I was just worried my little munchkin would suffer if the gluten damaged my gi tract and cut off his/her nutrients. I take my prenate every day and do drink ensure every day so hopefully my little sweetie is ok. :)

  16. I hope this post makes sense since I am writing through brain fog. So in addition to a total brain fog and feeling like death, I am worried about the baby. Did anyone have kids before they were diagnosed and if so, are your kids ok? I have heard it was very bad to get glutened while you were pregnant since it can hurt baby. Can anyone help?

  17. Thank you guys!!!! My coworker, Susan made me gluten free cherry cheescake cupcakes and we are going to Issac's in Hershey for lunch. They have such great summer salads. Tonight John is taking me to Chili's.

What a great co-worker! That's so sweet! For my birthday we had a sundae party in the conference room. It was kind of silly and very retro but I had a great time. :) Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
