  1. ....."But it happens every single time with plain old Fritos."......

When someone reacts every single time to a food product that contains no gluten ingredients, that tells me it is not a result of cross contamination.

Cross contamination is not a constant. If it exists in a production run, it is to a varying degree during that run. There will be more contamination, or less, or none in the products that are produced during that production run.

  2. I'm sorry, but I have rarely seen anyone in a food processing area truly clean it thoroughly in all the years I worked in restaurants, so I'm going with the strong assumption of it also being true at any pre-packaged food company as well.

So I'd take that statement as a no, Cheetos are NOT Gluten-Free.

I really wish that people would mention that they're replying to a topic that's a year and a half old. I just read through the whole thread before I ran into my own old reply and noticed. :o

There's a huge difference between restaurants and manufacturing facilities. No comparison at all. They wash those lines down with steam hoses. I know, I worked at Frito Lay. I've eaten Cheetos, Tostitos, Ruffles, and Fritos the whole time I've been on a strict gluten-free diet. Never once had a problem. There's no way that could be if there was a gluten cross contamination problem to the extent that many of our posters think. I suspect it's mass hysteria.

I don't doubt some people are intolerant of MSG, orange dye, soybean oil, dairy, processed foods, junk food, whatever. But that's not gluten!

Cheetos are good. Cheetos are our friend.

  3. Not only does one need to be vigilant re: refried beans, watch out for chili beans also. Bush's Best brand chili beans, for instance, contain wheat flour.

Side story if your interested. We had a poker party at my parents house last night. My Dad had told me earlier on the phone, that he saved a can for me to read in case I couldn't eat the refried beans (we were having make your own nachos, with all the fixins').

Well, he gave me the empty can of Gebharts refried beans, I read it and declared it safe. After I had eaten two nachos of the six I had made, someone questioned if the refried beans had chili added that contained meat (one of our guest was a vegetarian). They looked at the can my Dad had saved in the fridge (for me to read and that he forgot about) and indeed, being hot dog chili, it contained not only meat, but wheat flour as well. Needless to say, the vegetarian and I both made a new plate of nachos, sans the chili refried beans.

To my surpise, I did not get sick. These are all too common occurences. Mixups in communication that result in inadvertant gluten ingestion.

  4. Recently i was using up to a bottle of benadryl every other day, until I went completely gluten free,,soy free, milk and dairy free and a host of other things. Is this normal and do we have to carry it with us at all times?

Sorry, I don't quite get what one would take Benadryl for, in relation to Celiac. Benadryl is usually for cold like symptons, or nasal type allergies. Celiac symptoms are more commonly gastrointestinal in nature.

  5. now, why the hell would you even want to eat those???If celiac has taught me anything at all, it is the importance of nutrition on your life. Did you see the color of those things??? Do you see ANYTHING in there that is of ANY nutritoinal value, raw, unprocessed, full of vitamins and enzymes, wholesome? Is Msg what you look for in a good snack? I was allergic to msg long before I was aware of being a celiac. Have you noticed how you feel after you eat those? pasty mouth, thirsty, loaded, unsatisfied, wanting more of something, you just don't know what, something to get rid of that overwhelming salty taste...

I wouldn't touch those with a ten foot pole regardless of what they do for my skin. Try cutting up an apple and savor it instead of cheetos. Take note of your body's response after. Energy, clean palate, sweet but lean taste... yam>>>>>

    sol,

I think about 200 million people disagree with you (and that's just in the US). The Salty Snack Industry is one of the largest there is. Why? Salty snacks taste good. And there's calories, fat, sodium, and protein. That's nutrition (maybe not the best but it does have nutritional value, otherwise all the values on the label would be zeros). Hate to burst your bubble, but an apple has zero protein!

Now don't get me wrong, fruit is very good. And of course it's better for us than salty snacks. But that doesn't mean you can't have both. Who would want to just eat fruit all the time?

When I worked at Frito Lay Research Laboratories, I had access to the production plant where they made the Cheetos and other chips. Whenever I got the opportunity, I would go by the drum where the just fried Cheetos would tumble around and get squirted with nuclear orange hot melted cheese. OMG, you never tasted anything better in your whole life! No resemblance to the packaged Cheetos. But that's the way all the chips are. They're infinitely better hot & fresh. If ya ever get the chance to tour one of their plants, do it.

    best regards, lm

p.s., Hey sol, I'm just messin with ya a little, if we can't kid each other, who can we kid? (But every word I said is true, lol!).
