  1. According to this article they can actually use the cord blood to test.

I was dx with celiac last year, and have had our 2 yr old genetically tested since then (she has one gene) and am pregnant again. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to have the genetic test done on my newborn in the hospital when they do all those other tests? It's a long shot I know, but I would love to know right away if I even have to worry about him having celiac too or not.
  2. This article says you can use the gene test at ANY time. They can even use cord blood. Open Original Shared Link

My husband is celiac and at least 2 of my boys are celiac. We have not given any gluten to our 1 year old yet.

Celiac is not the end of the world I am finding. My boys are doing great! You should be scared to have kids! LOL! They will change your life.... but in wonderful, wonderful ways.

    Good luck,

I really need some help here, my husband and I want to have kids but I am scared. I was never actually diagnosised with celiac disease, the doctors ran the blood tests but not EDG. Anyway, the blood tests were negative but I had all the symptoms. The docotrs said I had IBS but I didn't believe them, to make a long story short my insurance ran out before I could get anymore testing done (I got married). I've go gluten free and my symptoms have gone away, I know when I eat something that has gluten in it.

Ok having said all that my question(s) are I don't know if I have celiac disease for sure but how should I feed my kids? Gluten free diet for them or not? How old before they can get tested? Will my not eating gluten/wheat affect them after birth?

I really could use any information anyone has, thank you

  3. Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to check back in with everyone and share good news. It has been just over a month now since I took my boys off gluten and life is GREAT! They are doing wonderful and are no longer angry and aggressive. :) We have made it through the boys birthday party gluten free with no complaints and we just went to a Valentine party with our homeschool group and it was not bad at all! Of course we had to turn down the cupcakes but we brought own and there was plenty of cheese, chips, fruits, candy and drinks that they COULD have. I also discovered that there are 3 other children in our homeschooling group that are celiac!

I know we have a long way to go and lots of challenges ahead - but so far so good. :D

We have not eaten out at all since going gluten-free so that will be our next big challange. Me, worrying about cross contamination and them having to turn down the usual kid meals. Wish us luck!

  4. We go there pretty often. They have moved though - now they are over closer to Signal Mt. We love the cookies. They use Betty Hagman's recipes. :)

Okay people good news! Well I mean if you're interested in ordering from the gluten free bakery in Chat.

I'm working with the corp. office to see if they can get the bakery owner (franchise) in Chat. to offer shipment that are only 1-2 days out from their location. You can find out what you are by calling 1-800 pick ups and telling them your zip code and the bakery zip (below).

For those of you who care below is the actual bakery (btw I was off on their name -oops! It's actually Great Harvest. Also, I'm listing the toll free of the number of the person I'm working with at corp. so you can call them too and rally support behind the idea if you are so inclined. You will not be disappointed if you give this bakery a chance. Also this is the ONLY bakery in the gluten-free dedicated facility in the country.

Oh and there are Great Harvest in Atlanta but apparently they don't offer gluten-free items. I'm going to double check that tomorrow. Plus I do not want items from a non ded. facility anyway and I'm sure the rest of you don't either.

  5. Vicki,

I would with out a doubt try the gluten-free diet for you 11 year old. It has made a world of difference in my boys even though ther bloodwork was neg.

    Good Luck!

Kelly (Mommy of Alex 8, Ethan 6 and Zac 1)

My 11 year old was just recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is a form of Autism. I have had Celiac's since he was born, but was not diagnosed until he was nine months old. I have been doing a lot of research, and I believe that gluten is connected to behavior. He is a very angry child, and shows no cooperation in school. I also believe that if celiac's runs in the family, then gluten can affect a non-celiac member. I am having my son tested on Tuesday, just as a precaution, because he hasn't been tested in a few years. If the blood work comes back negative, I am still going to try a gluten free diet with him. It's not going to be easy, but if it will change some of the negative behavior, then I will be one happy mom.

    gluten-free since 1995

  6. Good luck! I'll be thinking of you. Let me know how it goes.

    Kelly

I'm so happy to read you are having positive response!

We pulled gluten for a week, and the change in our son was not dramatic, but noticeable. He's going in for allergy testing tomorrow, and I will request - yet another - celiac panel.

I hate seeing him so angry, he's such a good kid and has always been very well mannered and even tempered. Right now he's just downright mean, mouthy, backtalking, and I wonder if it IS something to deal with a low level of pain.

I just want tomorrow over with though, he does NOT do well with doctors. =(

  7. First of all I want to thank everyone who has replied - you have ALL helped me feel much better about this.

Second : I just had to share with everyone. Last night as I was tucking my 8 year old in, he just couldn't stop laughing! Something he has not done in FOREVER! We just talked and giggled for about an hour - it was wonderful!!!! Then as I was leaving his room he said " Mommy, it feels good to not be so angry." I came down to my room and cried like a baby.

  8. Thank you! Now to start really planning the party and stop feeling bad about what they can't have. There are SO many worse things my children could have than celiac. Also we are so lucky to know about it!

    Kelly

That's how it was with my daughter. She's a completely different little girl gluten-free. It's amazing. Her concentration is greatly improved as well. She hardly ever says "I don't remember" any more whereas it used to be all-the-time.

On the Pizza and Cake for their first party, here's what I did:.........

    Hope this helps!

  9. Thank you so much!

I feel better knowing I'm not crazy and that my boys are not the only ones out there like this. LOL I feel so bad that my boys can't have gluten but it really seems worth it. Oh yes, they often wake up with night terrors. Hopefully that will stop now too.

Now to figure out their b-day party! It's coming up in 2 weeks. Yikes! You don't happen to have a wonderful cake or pizza recipe do you? I may use Amy's gluten-free pizza but it's not too good.

    Thanks again,

    Kelly

Most definitely YES. Actually negative behaviour and a negative attitude was one of the things that precipitated my search for a solution. My daughter was so so angry, nasty, hated all new things. She cried when she was dropped off at daycare EVERY SINGLE DAY for 7 straight months. she cried at dance class. She cried at gymnastics class.

At the 3 week mark of gluten-free diet, she transformed. She started singing in bed in the mornings (something she hadn't done since she was 1 but used to do all the time before then), she absolutely loves school, dancing. She loves trying new things. She is happy happy happy all the time. And I mean all the time.

When we hit the 3week mark and were just astounded at the changes in her attitude, we made a mistake and she was glutened. She turned back into her nasty old self almost immediately and it lasted for a seemingly-endless week. It was so disconcerting.

So my answer is absolutely yes. Behaviour is a biggie. And since for celiacs being gluten-free also means (quite often) a better night's sleep, the child is probably much better rested and able to cope (makes me think of one of your children that you mention cries at the drop of a hat - both of my children can be that way when they're sleep deprived).

You're in a great place if you homeschool. You can experiment in a controlled-environment.

  10. Hello Everyone,

My husband has celiac disease and has been gluten-free for almost 5 years now. I have three boys ages 8, 5 and 1. My older two had a blood test 4 years ago and we were told they were not celiac. However, they do have occasional tummy troubles and joint pain but the biggest problem is behavior. Since my husband is gluten-free many of the things we eat are also gluten-free. When my boys have gluten they really seem to change. Could they really be affected by it? My 8 year old becomes very angry, mean and aggressive, my 5 year old starts crying over everything and loses control easily. I took them 100% off of gluten 2 weeks ago and they seem like totally different children! The house is actually peaceful! I homeschool them so I can REALLY see a difference! I am happy but also sad if gluten is really the cause. I just can't believe gluten could cause such behavior problems. Most everyone tells me if they don't have constant tummy trouble, gluten is not the cause. Does anyone else have children where gluten causes behavior issues.

    Thanks,

    Kelly

  11. Thank you! Thank you everyone who has replied. I feel so much better knowing my boys are not the only ones out there with this problem. I joined a group for parents of celiac kids and they had never heard of this. I am so glad I'm not crazy!

    Thanks again!
