Hello - wondering if anyone out there has used, or has any information, on the new Dapsone topical ointment. My dermatologist told me that it's relatively new and has been approved as a treatment for acne, but I'm wondering if it has any affect on the DH lesions - even if it's just to take away some of the itching and spreading. Thanks!

Very interesting about the gelcaps. My daughter had been taking Aleve gelcaps for the migraines and new DH breakouts kept erupting. They seem to be clearing up now that she's off of the Aleve. We'll switch to Tylenol for the migraines - although it doesn't seem to help as much with the headache pain, but it's better than having both the headache and the intense itching of the DH.

Thanks for the info! One more ingredient to be on the look out for.

I remember going through the same issues myself. There was a very small thread asking about Microcristaline Cellulose some time back (it is in the inactive ingreditents list on Aleve).

As for me, I quit using it and have gone to plain tylenol for headaches and the migraines are few and far between. The only DH flare-ups I get now is from accidental glutening.
I've done some other google searches on it and found that the FDA says it is safe as long as proper manufacturing processes are used.

Can anyone shed some light on the connection between NSAIDs and DH? My teenage daughter has DH and she also suffers from chronic migraine headaches. She had been taking Aleve, and her DH is flaring back up again. The dapsone doesn't seem to be helping control these new flareups. Thanks!

Jersey Girl,
My family has switched insurance carriers a couple of times since my daughter was diagnosed with DH and so far, we haven't run into any problems. Insurance, however, has come from either my husband's work or mine, and no one has asked for any pre-condition proof, it that's what you're concerned about. Are you looking for independent health insurance and, if so, are they asking about pre-conditions? DH is challenging for sure, but it can be controlled and isn't life threatening, so I wouldn't think insurance should be too much of a problem. Some insurance carriers, and health care flex spending accounts, will even cover the cost of gluten free foods, providing you have proof of a health related neccesity.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate you sending that along!

Interesting about the wine - I never would have thought about the barrel. Is there a list of vineyards that use the flour paste?
As far as vodka goes - Chopin is distilled from potatoes. It's a bit pricey for mixing with tonic or juices, but it makes a tasty martini.

Try cocoa butter too. It seems to help with the scarring. My daughter has DH and carmex and neosporin sometimes help - carmex when the rash first appears; neosporin if you scratch so hard that you break the skin - it seems to help keep any additional bacteria out of the open wound.

I use a pizza stone and the crusts turn out great - not soggy at all. I usually set the temperature around 375 and cook the pizza for around 20 -25 minutes (my oven is temperamental) - don't forget to preheat. They're as good, or better, than a regular frozen pizza. We tried Amy's frozen pizzas, and they're good, but I always ended up adding additional toppings - they were a little lean in the cheese area. Luckily, we don't have dairy issues in our family - just gluten.

Wouldn't it be really cool if the Food Network would launch a new show on gluten free cooking? I see the advert online here on the forum for the 'Lovin from the Oven - gluten free cooking show' - is that only visible via the web?

The recent issue of Living Without magazine contains an article about gluten free dining at Disneyland and Disney World.

Does anyone know the ingredients in the Passion Fruit Green Tea smoothy from Caribou Coffee? I've looked on their website for nutritional information and it just lists the common stuff - calories, sugar, sodium, etc. The actual ingredients are not found. My daughter loves these and I want to make sure that they're safe for her to drink. The people actually serving the beverages don't have a clue.

It's a good book - lots of tips. Another one that I would recommend is the Gluten Free Bible.

I, too, am having issues with finding a decent bread. I've tried the Gluten Free Pantry sandwich bread, and it's good, but tends to crumble quite a bit. The 50/50 water/club soda suggestion sounds intriguing though. Will the club soda make the bread less crumbly? What type of kitchen aid mixer - counter top or hand? I'm assuming you mean counter top, but I'd like to be sure. My sister-in-law gave me one for Christmas and it's still in the box - never been 'glutenized'. Guess I'll open it up and actually use it!

Oh my goodness - if what you're saying about Hidden Valley is accurate, then my mystery might be solved. I've been glutening my own child by giving her carrots and Hidden Valley dressing to dip them in. I read all of the ingredients on the label and assumed (incorrectly) that it was safe. No wonder her DH has been flaring up so much lately. I feel like the worst mother ever.
I'll be calling the company today to confirm whether or not their dressing is gluten free, and if they can't give me a 100% answer, we'll be switching to Kraft. Are there any other salad dressings out there that are off limits too? What about cesear dressings?

Hello All - I'm relatively new to this whole gluten free life style, so I'm hoping that someone can help me out with some advice.
I'm wondering about soy - specifically soybean oil found in peanut butter. Is this safe to consume? My daughter has DH and lately it's been flaring up alot and I'm wondering if I'm inadvertantly glutening her by giving her peanut butter on a rice cake for lunch. Any advice would be welcome - thanks!

What about using Dapsone with children? My daughter was diagnosed with DH and wants to try Dapsone - we've been gluten free for the last couple of months since she was diagnosed, and the rash comes and goes. I've read quite a bit about the side effects of the medication and, frankly, I'm a bit scared to start her on this medicine. She also suffers from migraines, which I'm afraid will intensify if she starts taking Dapsone. Advice from anyone out there would be greatly appreciated.

Did you decide to go with the Dapsone, and if so, how's it working for you?

I'm wondering if anyone has children that have taken Dapsone, and if so, could you please share your experience. My 12 year old daughter has been initially diagnosed with DH - we're waiting on a second biopsy - and the doctor recommended Dapsone, in addition to going gluten free. Some of the side effects are a bit frightening and I'm on the fence as to whether or not to try this drug. My daughter has DH in all of the typical places, as well as her face. Being 12, she wants the rash GONE - right NOW. I understand her embarrassment, but I want to be sure that whatever we do has no lasting long term repercussions.
Thanks!

Hi. I've been reading through some of the postings on the site tonight and decided to join. Thanks for providing this forum for discussion.
My twelve year old daughter has had a strange rash for approximately the last year. It started behind her knee and initially looked as though it was a mosquito bite. As time went on, the rash spread the the fronts of her knees, elbows, back, hips, tail bone, shoulders - basically all over. Our GP diagnosed the beginning rash as ringworm, but when the topical hydrocortisone creams failed to clear up the problem, I began to wonder. The next diagnosis was eczema - steriodal ointments failed to clear up the problem either, nor did the 'holistic' medications/creams that I ordered off of the web. After much frustration, I finally insisted that my GP write me a referal to see a dermatologist. After several visits and more steriods, I requested a biopsy. The results came back today, and the diagnosis is DH - at least for right now. The doctor did another biopsy from a non-rash area to confirm and we're being sent for blood work as well.
The doctor discussed going gluten free, and I have no issue with this other than finding decent flavored foods, learning how to cook without gluten products and convincing a 12 year old that her life will continue without Pizza and Eggo waffles; however, he also mentioned Dapsone as a potential treatment. I'm wondering if anyone has taken this medication and can let me know about the potential long term side effects. From my initial poking around on the internet, it sounds quite dangerous - especially for a child. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Relief For The Pain?

My teenage daughter was accidentally glutened over the weekend (barbeque sauce) and is suffereing the effects today. Can anyone recommend something to relieve the stomach pain and cramping? Pepto Bismal, Ginger Ale...anything? The pharmacist recommended pepto or kaopectate, but it doesn't really seem to help. Thanks!
