ARCHIVED Hey New To The Forums
ravenwoodglass replied to Glutenfreenoobie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes it is very strongly hereditary. In my family it was 100% both in my immediate family, brothers and mother and likely my father and in my children. The chance of other family members also being celiac when one has been diagnosed is high. Family members should all be tested, even if they don't seem to have symptoms, and if they do have symptoms a trial... -
ARCHIVED Hiding Dh Possible?
ravenwoodglass replied to thenshewaslike's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
What branch of the military is he in and how long has he been there? There have been a couple of folks on the board who were career military and had been in for a long time that were allowed to stay in they were simply not able to be deployed and had to work stateside. If your husband is having outbreaks he is getting gluten somewhere. I think it is a mistake... -
ARCHIVED Having A Hard Time W/ My Son And His Diagnosis
ravenwoodglass replied to macocha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Your son is likely struggling with withdrawl and the changes that we all have to deal with. If withdrawl is behind this it should lift soon, as long as he is not sneaking gluten anywhere. Counseling is a good idea and if you have a local support group you may want to visit together. I don't know his age but if he is old enough to joing the teen section... -
ARCHIVED Privacy And Your Feelings About It?
ravenwoodglass replied to seezee's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That teacher should be fired. Under the Health Information Act she had no right to disclose a personal health issue. She broke the law. -
ARCHIVED Green Super Foods - Gluten Free?
ravenwoodglass replied to Gmason4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
After becoming severely ill from a product that was labeled gluten-free but had barley and wheat grass I won't touch them now. It did teach me to read all the label on my supplements. -
Celiac can cause an early menopause and it can also cause issues with fertility. When I was diagnosed celiac I asked my OB/GYN if celiac had caused it and he said yes but they don't know why. I saw him about 3 months into the diet when I had some spotting and since I hadn't had a period in a couple years I figured I should check it out. He told me not to...

ARCHIVED Does This Look Like Dh?
ravenwoodglass replied to aimeed's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It does look like DH and it is presenting like DH, bilaterally for the most part. It doesn't surprise me at all that both kids would have as it is just as strongly genetic as celiac is. A diagnosis of DH is a diagnosis of celiac and no other testing needs to be done. Not everyone with DH has tummy issues but it is still considered a diagnosis of celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED Could Use Your Opinions
ravenwoodglass replied to ali11's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would just stay with the gluten. It is not a long time to go and you can use the time to 'study' up and prepare the house, go through your toiletries etc. There is a chance if you eliminate it even for just a couple days that your reaction when you add it back will be worse than it is now. IMHO you should just hang in there. -
ARCHIVED Celaic Is Acting Up (We Think)
ravenwoodglass replied to tross's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Does he know he also has to avoid barley, rye and oats? Make sure he understands that the barley malt in most cereals is an issue and is also an issue in stuff like beer and malt liquors, some candy etc. -
ARCHIVED Could Use Your Opinions
ravenwoodglass replied to ali11's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do not go gluten free until after the endo is done. You need to be actively eating gluten for the endo to have any chance of being accurate. Wait until the endo is done and then go gluten free that day. -
Keep trying it is so worth it.

ARCHIVED Celaic Is Acting Up (We Think)
ravenwoodglass replied to tross's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board. I am sorry he is going through so much. I don't know if he can take it but Pepto Bismal liquid helps me with the pain when it is in the stomach. When it is intestinal I haven't found anything that helps other than a hot water bottle and being curled up. Is he on any meds or OTC stuff? If he is it is important that the pharmacist check... -
ARCHIVED What Allergy Shot?
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have celiac shots wouldn't do any good as it isn't an allergy. However if you also have a true allergy to wheat an allergist might be able to help with that. Check with a good allergist and be sure to tell them you have celiac. The allergist can do testing for a wheat allergy and advise you from there. It might also be a good idea to see a derm and... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Licorice At Trader Joes
ravenwoodglass replied to AlysounRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you. I get the Gimbals Jelly beans at Wally world whenever I go there. Perhaps I can contact them and see if anyplace in my area carries the licorice. I really appretiate your looking them up and finding the company. -
Thank you for posting that. I will be passing it on.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Licorice At Trader Joes
ravenwoodglass replied to AlysounRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Awwwwwwwwwwwww I'll have to see if I can find a Trader Joes on my trip to Boston in the fall. I haven't been back to Newport in ages so a detour through RI may be in order so I can bring home a case. -
ARCHIVED Night Sweats
ravenwoodglass replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes I get them too. The doctors blamed it on my very early menopause but they stopped within a month or so of giving up gluten and now happen only if I get glutened or if I eat a very, very large amount of chocolate. -
ARCHIVED Can You Get A False Negative If Already gluten-free?
ravenwoodglass replied to ruhbehka's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
He just needs an active lesion which it sounds like he has. Just make sure the Derm knows to biopsy next to the lesions and that he is looking for DH. A diagnosis of DH is a diagnosis of celiac. I hope your little guy feels better soon. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Licorice At Trader Joes
ravenwoodglass replied to AlysounRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is this a Trader's Joes product or is a brand that could be found elsewhere? I love black licorice and haven't been able to find any that is safe other than the black Jelly Belly Jelly Beans. -
ARCHIVED Positive Results - No Symptoms
ravenwoodglass replied to betts13's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gee I wonder if we are related. You are only one of two other DQ9s I have seen here. For me the migraines were a definate issue before diagnosis and I haven't had another since I went gluten free. It did take many years of neuro and skin issues before I developed GI issues, like almost 20 before they seemed anything other than an occasional inconvience... -
ARCHIVED Lost Almost 4 Lbs In 8 Hours Of . . .
ravenwoodglass replied to masterjen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It could be the shampoo that got you. Was the rice cereal make in a gluten free facility? It could have been CC'd if it wasn't. As mentioned it is also early on in the diet for you and healing does take some time. For a nice hot cereal if you liked Cream of Wheat try Cream of Buckwheat. It is very close to cream of wheat in taste and texture. Pocono brand... -
ARCHIVED Did You Have A Trigger That Started Your Symptoms?
ravenwoodglass replied to afreeclimber74's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes. The trigger that started it all was being impaled at the age of 4. No one was home and I had to rescue myself and scared the dickens out of a neighbor when I went to her home covered in blood. I developed DH (Mom was told I had 'poison ivy in my bloodstream) and ataxia soon after. I also developed severe depression at that time which was a problem off... -
ARCHIVED Food Should Taste Good Chips
ravenwoodglass replied to kenlove's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oats are considered to be gluten free. It is the processing that so heavily contaminates most oats that makes them something to avoid. Certified gluten free oats are grown and processed in a way that CC is prevented. That said there are some of us who will react to even for sure certified gluten-free oats. No way of knowing if you are one of those. -
ARCHIVED Two Months Trying And Still No Baby...
ravenwoodglass replied to Becci's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The reason your period is showing later is likely because you are so stressed out about getting pregnant. I know how hard it is to be patient, it took me 10 years of trying before I finally had my first but I was on gluten for all those years. If you are still gettting your period then celiac has not cut your chances of concieving. Celiac can give us an... -
ARCHIVED Food Should Taste Good Chips
ravenwoodglass replied to kenlove's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat the chips occasionally BUT I don't eat the ones with oat fiber. Some of us tolerate gluten free oats but some of us don't. I am one who avoids oats. I eat the Black Olive and when I can find them the Chocolate ones.
