ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge ?
ravenwoodglass replied to Miss J Loo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gene test can't tell you whether you have celiac or not. It can simply tell you whether you carry the genes, and many places do not test for all the genes. It is useful however when combined with the results of a challenge, and yours seems positive. Tell your doctor what is happening with the challenge, some are savvy enough to diagnose based on relief... -
ARCHIVED Could My Bipolar Be Caused By Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to fitbunni's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had a seizure disorder whose symptoms closely resembled Bipolar. Long lasting 'highs' and horrible crushing lows. No issues with either since I have been gluten free but if glutened the depression hits hard, fast and is over within 24 hours. I was on a very strong antiseizure med for a long time but don't need it now. Celiac doesn't cause everything, I... -
ARCHIVED Can Wheat Allergy Tests Rule Out Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to gamma517's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IMHO it is a common misconception that GI is less serious and causes less damage than celiac. Some including myself consider them to be simply differnt presentations of the same disease. With intolerance it can be other organs than the gut that sustain the most damage. People with DH, for example, are considered celiac but the main symptom can be skin issues... -
ARCHIVED Soaps, Shampoo, Face Wash, Etc
ravenwoodglass replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have only seen wheat in one or two products. They were for 'old' skin with tightening and firming. One was an eye gel the other a cream. The wheat was clearly listed in the ingredients. I use their cleansing product in the pump bottle and the Wrinkle Defense Night cream every day with no issues. I don't know your age but if wrinkles and sagging are an issue... -
ARCHIVED Endoscopy After 3 Months Of Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to bluebonnet's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For the best chance at a Gold Standard diagnosis you really need to be eating gluten. If the doctor is just looking for other issues then no but if he is attempting to diagnose you as celiac you must go back to a full gluten diet to get the best chance of accurate results. Even on a full gluten diet there is still a chance of a false negative on the biopsy... -
ARCHIVED Soaps, Shampoo, Face Wash, Etc
ravenwoodglass replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Suave and Garnier Nutritioneste will clearly label gluten ingredients. I use mostly Garnier products for skin and hair but they do make a couple face creams that do have gluten so do read the label. Giovanni and Burts Bees are good organic companies for gluten-free stuff, just be sure to read the labels to be sure. They also clearly label. Tom's of Maine... -
ARCHIVED Delayed Food Reactions
ravenwoodglass replied to Leper Messiah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My neuro symptoms and stomach growling happen pretty quick. My GI issues, DH breakout and muscle and joint pain don't normally hit until 3 or 4 days later. My allergist said this was normal for intolerances and that for some the reaction can take up to a week. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Still Got Symptoms !
ravenwoodglass replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for posting this, it may be useful for some of us that are still having issues. It should be noted that the E Numbers are used in Europe but not in the US. In the US most of these items would need to be listed by name on the label. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Cosmetics
ravenwoodglass replied to GFLindsey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Food and cosmetics have different labeling regs. If dextrin or maltodextrin are wheat derived in food they must be declared as derived from wheat and are usually from corn in the US. In cosmetics and drugs the source does not not need to be disclosed. That may be why it is on the cosmetics list. -
ARCHIVED Can Wheat Allergy Tests Rule Out Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to gamma517's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wheat allergy and celiac/gluten intolerance are two different things. People can have one or the other or both. Allergies are histamine reactions and tend to hit quickly after an allergenic substance comes into contact with us. Gluten intolerance and celiac are autoimmune antibody reactions and don't show up in allergy tests. Also not all celiacs are skinny... -
ARCHIVED What Is Considered 'damage'
ravenwoodglass replied to glutenfr3309's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You, like myself sound like you have had neuro impact from the antibodies. For some symptoms like the fatigue and brain fog can be due to deficiencies but for some of us they are more due to brain impact. For those that have those type issues due to malabsorption they are not IMHO as likely to reoccur with an accidental glutening as they are with someone... -
ARCHIVED Severe Pain In Lower Right Abdomen... Related To Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to Becci's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you had a lower scope done? If not it might be a good idea to see a GI and perhaps have one done. I am assuming that you are not being glutened but are you having any GI symptoms? Have you seen your OB/GYN to make sure you don't have ovarian cysts? I sorry the doctors haven't been able to help you yet and hope it gets figured out soon. -
ARCHIVED Is Gluten Sensitivity Inherited Like Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to farmwife67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
He may not be published but there is info out there on other genes linked to celiac/gluten sensitivity. Some of the genes he refers to are even consider to be celiac related genes in other countries. Like my gene. I believe research has shown them both, if they are not indeed just different presentations of the same thing, to have strong genetic links and... -
ARCHIVED I Feel So Lucky!
ravenwoodglass replied to Juliebove's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What a great guy. I am glad the damage wasn't too bad. Hope today is sunnier for you. -
ARCHIVED Wheatgrass
ravenwoodglass replied to caboheidi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not for me. I only tried it once, I had heard it was safe, but the results were not so good. Wouldn't ever touch it again. -

ARCHIVED Lord's Supper-Communion- Questions
ravenwoodglass replied to tiredofbeingsickandtired's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree. Have you talked to your Pastor to see if perhaps you can bring in a bit of gluten free bread for them to bless and perhaps even a small glass of a juice that you can safely drink? I know the Catholic religion requires there to be wheat in the host but I don't know if other faiths are the same. If you can't arrange for safe alternatives I think God... -
ARCHIVED From Carelessness To Paranoia?
ravenwoodglass replied to rdunbar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your not alone. Getting glutened hurts so of course you want to avoid it at all costs. One thing I do is to make sure I keep my hands away from my face until I get back home. I wash my hands first thing when I walk through the door. I do look to see if there are crumbs on the belt and if there are I ask the cashier to please wipe them off. I also make sure... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed, Have Questions
ravenwoodglass replied to Sandi575's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just a caution, please do not do this unless you have had testing done to show that you actually do have little critters. Your regular MD can do stool testing to check for them. With a compromised gut some of the OTC preperations could be hurtful to your system. Don't just take them just in case. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Cosmetics
ravenwoodglass replied to GFLindsey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is a list of some of the things to look for in cosmetics and toiletries. I forget where it came from it may have even been something I found here. Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour Cyclodextrin Dextrin Dextrin Palmitate Hydrolyzed Malt Extract Hydrolyzed Oat Flour Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein Hydrolyzed Wheat Flour Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten Hydrolyzed... -
ARCHIVED Could Use Your Opinions
ravenwoodglass replied to ali11's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes you do need to stay on the gluten until your blood and endo (if your having one)testing is finished. As soon as that is done go ahead and get on the a trial of the diet. You don't have to wait for the test results. -
ARCHIVED Could My Dog Make Me Sick
ravenwoodglass replied to Chrisco's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would switch them to a gluten free food and see if you feel better. If you have a licker he could be CCing you. Many of us do use gluten free pet food for that reason. We usually find the dogs do better on it also. -
ARCHIVED Snyders- Call To Action
ravenwoodglass replied to cbear6301's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am not someone who can risk stuff 'made in the same facility' that may or may not be for sure gluten free. I get too sick and it just isn't worth it for a snack food when so many good safe alternatives are around. I am glad for you that you can consume them with no issues but not all of us can take that risk. The choice is up to an individual to take... -
ARCHIVED To Those With Dogs
ravenwoodglass replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was about to post the same thing. I also use gluten free pet food for the most part. Occasionally I will give the dog a can that has some gluten but the cats eat strictly gluten free and do much better for it. No where near the amount of puke piles as on gluten food and the litter box is much nicer to clean also. -
It does sound to me also like you have picked up a virus. Gluten would not stay in your system and it does not cross into the brain etc. What does happen is the antibodies flow through the system and that is what is technically causing a 'gluten reaction'. They do subside after we have been gluten-free for a bit but CC or an accidental glutening create...
