I love to watch movies, especially chick flicks, grill, exercise, hang out with friends, and am very much a homebody. I am also a youth leader at my church and love to hang out with teenagers. My nephews are my pride and joy and are a lot of fun!

  1. I know exactly what you mean. :-) I was making cookies and LOVE cookie dough, so after I put in the chocolate chips, took a big old bite, and it was the grossest thing I have ever tasted. I thought I was going to throw up. I thought maybe I just got a bad bag, b/c I had heard Bob's was so good. I chugged a whole can of pop and still couldn't get the awful taste out of my mouth. My cookies never turn out though, they are soupy or runny. Does everyone else have that problem, but after they cook are they o.k.? I usually throw the batter away b/c I figure I did something wrong and their not worth cooking.

  2. I agree. Definitely say "severe food allergy". I know for me it helps get their attention, and they are way more helpful to adapt to my needs. If I say "gluten intolerance" they usually don't know what the heck I am talking about and therefore, blow it off as not a big deal. Even if after I say "severe food allegy" and they have that deer in a head lights look, I will use the words, "deathly ill" to reiiterate that I am being absolutely serious. And I am not lying b/c sometimes when we are glutened, we swear we are dying and sometimes would rather just die than feel as miserable as we are feeling.

  3. I had such an amazing weekend and did not feel like a "loser" with Celiac Disease like I usually do. In the small town I live in, there are no restaurants with gluten free menus, and most of the time it's just easier not to eat out, than to take the chance, and usually end up getting sick.

Not this weekend though. I went to Omaha for the weekend and had the best time. I ate at Chipotle twice, before even getting the word "gluten" out of my mouth the server was already taking his gloves off and was more than willing and nice enough to do everything he could to assist me, he was definitely trained very well, and I was so appreciative. AND their website actually states that everything there is gluten free except for the tortillas. It tasted so wonderful, and was a divine treat.

I also ate at Noodles and Company and Outback which were also absolutely wonderful and also very professionally trained.

I could not have asked for a better weekend eating out, it's always a little scary when you are not preparing your meals yourself. I feel so blessed, and it really encouraged me. I needed that desperately to help me not "hate" this disease so much.

  4. When the doctor tells you that you have Celiac Disease then his next sentence is....It's ok though to still eat whatever you want. If you get sick it doesn't matter just don't eat for a little bit and you'll be o.k. What sad, is b/c he was my doctor and I had never hear the word gluten before that visit, I continuted eating "whatever" for the next 5 years.

    Think I need a new doctor!?!...... :-)

  5. I get the same itching problem when I get glutened. I think the Benedryl suggestion is great - that's what I do. A cold shower to calm the hot irritated skin or a cool bath w/ black tea bags helps too (the tanic acid is very soothing).

I would also suggest avoiding Applebee's and Arby's at all costs. Those two restaurants are not friendly to Celiac diet.

Hope you feel better soon! :)

have you had bad experiences with them? Applebees are usually very helpful and willing to go the extra mile to cook my food. I always give the manager there, Christy, a big tip. This is the first time I have had trouble. Also, have you had problems with Arby's? I guess I like to eat out so much that it is hard for me to think I have to avoid places. So anyone's ideas and suggestions are beneficial to me.

    Thanks,

  6. Chipotle is my FAVORITE place to eat. I recently moved to a small town but when I lived in Omaha, I ate there SEVERAL times a week! The steak fajita bowl with sour cream and a side of chips and guac is my favorite. Since then I have gone 100% gluten free and no longer "cheat" once in a while, so I don't know if the chips are gluten-free.

    Anybody know if they are?

  7. Definitely apologize and be completely honest. I think by not responding and not trying to make things right will just make things fester. That would really make him think that you don't care and confirm in his mind what he is already thinking, by your comment, that you really do feel that way. We are all human and we all make mistatkes. Make your actions back up your words and your apology so that he sees that you don't really feel that way, not just hears it.

  8. I have been very bitter that I have this stupid disease. I yell at it all the time, telling it how much I hate it and how stupid it is and why did I have to get the stupid disease. Most of the time I just want to be normal, be able to eat out with my friends and family w/out asking a 1000 questions. My family not having to "de-gluten" their house just for me to come and visit, which makes me feel like a big inconvenience, but I can't take the chance of CC when my health is concerned.

Most days, I am bitter. But I try to remind myself that things could be a lot worse, atleast I have something that is just controlled by diet and reading labels.

But it does suck, so I totally understand, and it's HARD!

  9. Hi All,

I have a question. I thought last weekend that I might have been CC'd by a salad at Applebees or Arby's as I "thought" I was eating safe all weekend but then felt like crap Sunday afternoon. Not sure if it was from the salad Friday night or Sunday at lunch.

All week though, I have felt exhausted and kind of "brain Fog". I am so tired I can't hardly make it to bed, but then once there, I can't sleep at all and I itch so bad I can't stand it. I ended up getting up at 2:00 am last night and took a shower hoping that would help.

Is this normal? Does anyone else experience this if they have been glutened? Maybe it is just seasonal allergies, but I don't know what to do. I NEED SLEEP AND I CAN'T STAND THE ITCHING ANY LONGER!!!!!

    any suggestions or thoughts?

  10. Dove products are gluten free if you buy store-brand shampoo and conditioner. I have never used them b/c I just use salon products, but Dove says they are gluten free and I have seen it on the boards several times.

i just went through the same boat over labor day weekend. I had to go through my entire house; cleanign supplies, fingernail polish, make-up, lotions, etc. b/c I was getting glutened. I had always thought until that weekend that you just had to watch food products.

Thank goodness for this forum....it teaches you so much!

  11. I emailed my Mary Kay rep and she sent me the ingriedients to the make-up I use. If anyone is interested. Sorry, it's not an extensive list, just the items I use, but they are pretty common.

If you are a "Celiac" Expert, or just plain more knowlegeable than me, please take a look and tell me if you see any "red flags" in any of the ingredients. As far as I can tell, they are all gluten free, but I am new at not looking at just food ingredients so I might miss something.

    Here they are....

  12. Here are a couple of my favorites and they freeze really well. I always make up a big batch over the weekend and then freeze them and heat it up over my lunch break for a quick and easy meal.

Cuban-Style Pork and Sweet Potato Slow Cooker Stew

1 large sweet potato(es), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch dice (about 1 lb)

1 pound lean pork loin, cut into 1-inch pieces

14 1/2 oz canned diced tomatoes, with green chiles

    1 medium garlic clove(s), minced

    1/4 cup orange juice

2 medium scallion(s), chopped (green parts only)

    1/2 tsp table salt

    1/4 tsp ground cumin

    1/4 tsp black pepper

1 1/2 Tbsp fresh lime juice

    2 Tbsp cilantro, fresh, chopped

Place potato, pork, tomatoes, garlic, orange juice, scallions, salt, cumin and pepper in a 4- to 5-quart slow cooker; cover and cook on low setting for 7 hours.

Stir in lime juice and cilantro; cover slow cooker and cook for 5 minutes more. Yields about 1 1/2 cups per serving (including some cooking liquid.)

  13. Ok...this is going to make me look really dumb, but that's o.k.

I am new to the board and am trying to read posts, but am always getting a little confused, b/c I feel like there is a "secret" language that I have never learned. What the heck is MIL, DD, DH, and all of ther short abbreviates stand for? Is there a manual somewhere!

I just feel so stupid, but I think it's kind of funny that I don't know, so I had to ask!!! :-)

  14. I notice that my face looks red alot like I have been sunburned or maybe am blushing. I never thought of it as being glutened! Do you guys think that is what it could be? I didn't use my face wash, Cetaphil, today b/c I thought maybe that's what it was, but it still looks red. I have been hungrier this week too, but I just thought it was a diet thing b/c I am on WW.

    Any ideas?

  15. We have used the Herbox before it was good.

Also, if you have a Wegmans in your area, their brand of Chicken Culinary Stock is gluten free and listed as such. I use it all the time. I love it. I paired it with some Glutano Targalte Noodles and fresh veggies and made some wonderful soups last winter.

Thanks so much! I have always thought broth was bad and it would make me sick. I though it just naturally had gluten or something....not sure why I have always though that!
