    Hi,

It sounds like you have been through alot and I wish you the best. It seems to me that with your history of anorexia you should look at getting some expert assistance in terms of your diet and ensuring you stay on track. My GI set me up in a meeting with a nutritionist which was very helpful. Perhaps you would find it helpful to do that. As well, I am assuming your family doctor is aware of your anorexia. Were you referred to a specialist in the past to help with that? If you are concerned about relapsing and are starting to lose weight it sounds like you know you should get help now rather than wait for it to get out of control.

Again, good luck and sorry I can't be more helpful.

A guard donkey? I love it!! It is big, like a mule size, or just a cute little donkey?

I'm so jealous of you two!!! I will never be able to convince my husband to move to an acreage...he is a city boy at heart. I grew up on an acreage with our own garden, our own cattle (so I grew up on grass fed beef) and everything was organic...didn't realize how lucky I was at the time.

I am contemplating putting some vegetables into my little city lot here somewhere, but I have lots of trees in a small yard, so too much shade I think. There are some community gardens, but from what I've seen of them, I'm not convinced I'd be getting organic goods.....(sigh) maybe someday!!

Yes, It is surprising the things you have to give up...check the labels on the soup stock you buy as well...you'll be amazed at how many contain wheat. The organic Imagine brand seems to be gluten free and you can also buy bullion cubes that are gluten free. I do like to cook and bake, both. I guess the things I miss are the baked items so that is what I'm gravitating towards.

Made a yummy peanut satay sauce the other day (Safeway brand soy sauce is gluten free) and made a bunch of chicken satay. My left over chicken will end up on a salad.

By the way, met with the nutritionist and watch the little paper packages of pepper. Apparently many of them have wheat germ in them as filler...who knew??? As well, many herbal teas have wheat in them as filler and the tea bags may contain wheat.

Anyways, it is nice to know there is still lots of really good, healthy food that we can eat!!!

    Chat soon.

I will have to mark the day on my calendar!! That is a great idea and I can celebrate it yearly with a gluten free anniversary cake of some kind! I do have a bread machine, which works well with the Celimix bread mix. I have also used Kinnikinik bread mixes which aren't yeast based, so are pretty easy to make...those I just mix up and bake. The best is the flax/sunflower seed one, at least so far of what I've tried...I have to say I don't care for the pre-baked loaves in the freezer section of the grocery store, as they seem really dried out...maybe sitting in the freezer section too long?? I'll let you know how the Bob's Red Mill turns out...

    Glad you are feeling better!!

    Hi Krisloner,

Check out the link above. It takes you to the related disorders and research forum of this site. There may be additional posts there that you find useful. In this thread, I think you will see that many have struggled as you have with the emotional as well as physical element of gluten intolerance/celiac disease. Ensure that your doctor tests you for any vitamin/mineral deficiencies that might be contributing to the depression. For many, it sounds like as they have healed, their depression has lifted, but likely the timing of that was different for each person.

Good luck with things. Hopefully you find lots of helpful information in this site.

    Hi Krisloner,

You may want to check out this thread in another section in this site. It is under the Related Disorders and Research forum. There may be additional threads, but there are also some links to some other sites and references to books etc., that you may want to check out. As you will read from peoples comments in the site, there certainly can be an a component of the disease that effects mental health as well as physical.

Good luck with everything, and hopefully you find lots of helpful information on the site.

It will get better!! I have noticed symptoms subsiding and it has been about 10 days. The first week was the worst, getting through the cravings, but now I am good. The D symptoms have cleared up, gassiness is gone (much to my delight!!..sometimes I run in a group and since I am the group leader I am in front. Now I don't have to worry about the poor people downwind!). I really hope your symptoms clear soon, although sounds like you have been dealing with a whole lot more than I ever did. If you have had more damage, it will likely take longer to heal...just draw on that inner strength and fortitude you developed in your running to persevere through it.

I would sometimes get immediate symptoms and sometimes not and some things caused more abdominal discomfort and gassiness, whereas some would just cause me to sleep poorly and get brain fog...not sure why that is. Maybe the amount and types of gluten? I typically don't get such immediate discomfort that I couldn't eat it, so am much like you in that if I let myself I could have a piece of toast and say I don't feel different enough immediately. But with the food logs, etc., I know that the effect will be felt and even with one piece, probably for a few days.

    Good luck and chat soon!

:D I am through the worst of it...like the first time, the craving lasted about 1 week this time. I came home to fresh baked chocolate chip cookies (my husband makes great cookies) and had no interest in them....yeah!!!

So, I have been a good 4 days or so now with no cravings and I am feeling more settled. Just getting back into the swing of what I need to buy in the way of groceries. I found a great little deli where I live that has all gluten free deli meats, and they carry a pretty decent line of gluten free items, so that got me excited! I am going to bake up the Bob's Red Mill Hearty Whole Grain Bread mix this weekend and see how that is.

Hope all is well with you as well!!

Ooh, I'm behind on keeping up with these comments. Not sure mine is DH either....I used to have "psoriasis" or "eczema" as a kid (never formally diagnosed, that is just what my parents called it) and got the cortisone creme for it, which always seemed to help. Horribly itchy, but not blistered. I just have very dry skin that tends to be easily irritated. I am going to mention it to the doc, but it might also be related to absorption issues with some vitamins/minerals? I was reading another thread somewhere about the 1/2 moons in peoples fingernails disappearing, and checked mine out....lo and behold, I have no moons on my nails anymore..I used to. Can't find anything legit about what it means and I don't want to start assuming every little thing is tied to this, but just interesting to note all these wierd little things.

    Thanks for the input!!

Thanks, yes that is the story is that I am waiting to get tested and would like for the results to be accurate...if gluten free when tested, results could be skewed. There are those who choose not to go the formal testing route, but I am one of those who wants to know conclusively, partly for me and partly to convince others in my family to get tested (they aren't likely to without a formal diagnosis)

    newby to celiac?
Based on what I am reading in the discussion boards, when people start to feel better is uniqe to each person and may depend on how much damage has occured. I think everyone will tell you to persist with the diet. Also, cross contamination can be an issue if you have regular eaters in your household or if you eat out much. There is also hidden gluten in alot of foods you wouldn't suspect. You may have been diligent about checking into everything, but sometimes we got caught unawares with something like a spice or tomatoe sauce. I have also heard a lot of other people indicate that they need to cut out dairy for the first while as well until everything heals.

Hopefully you start feeling well soon!!

Thanks, Mosaics. I can check into it with our insurance plan, but am pretty sure it will be a no go for coverage. I have heard lots of people refer to Enterolabs as well for Celiac panels...not sure if that is the lab you are quoting. At this point I think I am going to see how long my appointment is with a specialist and take it from there. I feel soooo gooood not eating gluten, the thought of going back on it is a real turn off!!!
