  1. Hormel says gluten free right on the box and they have great flavors!
  2. Just as a personal side note...this week we decided we were really going to crack down on the sugar intake...I caved tonight. I found a See's chocolate Santa from my son's stocking. I did ask before I lopped off his head and ate it...now as for the shoulders...nope, didn't ask - just chomped them down. So much for that sugarless run! We have been drinking...
  3. I'm not positive, so I'd do some more research; but I believe that study had a very small number of participants. If it's the same one I'm thinking about I think it was also deemed inconclusive in most of the medical society. But look into it further... On a purely personal, extrememly small sample size - my hubby and I switched to a gluten-free household...
  4. It is tough in the beginning...with cereal, I only trust those that say gluten free. With Kix and others (I haven't tried them with my son), I'm afraid of the possibility of cross contamination. I've emailed and called General Mills several times trying to get an answer as why the Chex is labelled and the rest are not, but I've not gotten a satisfactory...
  5. You might try calling your ped's office and requesting the Celiac blood test. You might luck out and have them be cooperative. Try firm but kind. Then you wouldn't have to wait.
  6. First, have you had either of them tested for Celiac. If you or your pediatrician have any possible thought that it is Celiac, you're going to want to have the testing done before you remove gluten. The test doesn't work if they aren't eating gluten. Also, this is a strict, sometimes challenging lifestyle and you want to have as much motivation to stay...
  7. We love the 365 Day gluten-free cookies too! Those and Gluten Free Sensations are my favorites!
  8. Get some Udi's. I can't tell the difference from gluten bread (I don't have Celiac, my son does, so I still have gluten bread every now and then).
  9. Could you be reacting to the increase in fiber? I believe it's really important to add oats back slowly so your gut can adjust to the added fiber.
  10. So you feel comfortable with the Kix products even though they're by General Mills and don't say gluten free?? I've been avoiding them because I assumed they're be cross contaminated.
  11. I just called Wonka...Nerds Ropes are still gluten free. Regular crunchy Nerds are still gluten free on their ingredients, but they are made in a facility where cross contamination is a possibility. The rep I spoke with said if you do not see an allergen on the label and do not see a note about the facility then they are considered gluten free. She said...
  12. I would definitely have him checked for Celiac. It may not be, but your son's symptoms sure do seem to sound like Celiac. My son had almost all of the same symptoms you described and thankfully it turned out to be Celiac and they all went away with a gluten free diet!
  13. We just had my son's annual visit to the GI today...he didn't even want to do bloodwork. They checked his height and weight (woo hoo he gained over 10 pounds in one year!!), gave him a cursory once over, asked if we had any questions or problems and said see you in a year. I might have liked a little something more, but I don't know what that would've been...
  14. You're good to go on the Nerds and Tootsie Rolls. And if you call Wonka they will send you a list of all their gluten-free candy PLUS a coupon. Can't beat that! I've tried even seen PB M&Ms, so I can't comment on those, but the plain and peanut are eaten quite regularly around here!
  15. We only allow our son to do cereals that are labelled gluten free (no Kix here). He likes Erewhon Flakes and strawberries (don't remember the name) and Twice Rice. He also like Gorilla Munch and Leapin Leamurs.
  16. Just wanted to put another voice in for the "no, no, no." I've never heard of annual biopsies as standard procedure. Annual blood tests, yeah, but certainly not biopsies! No way!
  17. Oh my gosh, we have success stories! I probably won't get through much because I'm trying to get dinner ready, but I'll at least get started! Our biggest success - our son is healthy! And there was no chemo, no radiation, no "this may come back", no nothing! Now he plays sports (and pretty well I'd say, but I'm a wee biased), plays the piano beautifully...
  18. Oh he could scratch himself until his skin welted up and had red blotches. It was awful! There was never a rash with it really. Any visible signs of it were due to his scratching. I don't remember how soon it cleared up...sorry. He did have gastro symptoms. Doctors told us for years (literally years) that that was because he ate so many fruits and...
  19. Our son had a positive biopsy as well. His blood test came back at an even 100! I've always read that the blood test is 98-99% accurate. I've also read that typcially when it's wrong it is a false NEGATIVE, not a false positive. I have done a lot of reading on Celiac over the past two years (I highly recommend Dr. Peter Green's book Celiac Disease...
  20. It is completely a personal decision. We did the biopsy with our son, but we new nothing about Celiac back then. I don't know if we would go through it knowing what we know now...Also, it was costly. Even with a very good insurance plan, our co-pay was still really high. I know it is the gold standard, but I would really like to see some hard scientific...
  21. Here are some ideas: nachos, tacos, quesadillas fried mozzarella sticks with marinara Weird but great - cream cheese balls with green olives in the center rolled in crushed walnuts Chili Chicken wings ordinary veggies & dip, cheese cubes, chips & dip, tortillas & salsa Green Goddess veggie dip (search for Green Goddess on the forum and...
  22. We do the thermos and ice pack sort of lunches daily. Our school has microwaves for the middle schoolers, but my son prefers to have the thermos because it's faster. The other kids who aren't on special diets have to choose to either wait for the microwaves or bring their food in a thermos. I wouldn't make this a big deal. Sure it was nice when it...
  23. I've always seen that the blood test is 98% accurate and the inaccuracy comes from false negatives, not falst positives. Per our son's GI doctor's recommendation we had the biopsy done though. BUT, it sounds like you're already gluten free. You have to be eating gluten for the biopsy to be accurate. If I were in your shoes I'd skip the biopsy. I wouldn...
  24. We take popcorn in all the time. My son actually doesn't like plain popcorn, even movie popcorn (I on the other hand could eat it every day!). So we just take a ziplock with his favorite (SmartPop White Cheese, Trader Joes Kettle Corn, Pirate's Booty, etc.). He also doesn't like pop, so I take a Propel or whatever drink he wants. I just slip it into my...
