  1. My husband takes DDS. I don't know where it is available or its price compared to others, but it was recommended to us by a dietician and he's had great results with it.
  2. If the dietician is very familiar with Celiac (our dietician is a Celiac) and you can afford to pay for it, I'd visit the dietician. If they are just going to give you the textbook info, don't bother. But we found our visit to be fantastic! What I found to be the most helpful in our learning process was to make a list of all the meals/foods I knew how...
  3. Just FYI, side affects of azithromycin include diarrhea and headache...
  4. Jason, I don't know your circumstances, so I don't know about your health, but you can have a good life. Life is what we make it. Seeing how my son has adapted over the last year has been such an inspiration to me on so many aspects of life. Your life may never be exactly the same as it was, but that doesn't mean it has to be worse. By eating healthy...
  5. Pizza is one of our "special" meals around here and we make it once a week for our pizza and a movie night. I use a pizza stone and bake the crust for 10-12 minutes and then put on the sauce and toppings and re-bake until it's the color we like on top. I think the stone is a huge part of why the crusts turn out so great. Cookie sheets just don't seem to...
  6. I've been on a personal mission to get to the bottom of what's up with General Mills and their new recipes that don't appear to have gluten. The Rice Chex made such a splash about being gluten free with the markings on the box, press release, website, gluten free recipes, etc. I've been trying to get someone to tell me why the Honey Kix and Strawberry Chex...
  7. OK, the non-Celiac is chiming in...black pepper and I do NOT agree. So there is at least one person out here who cannot have black pepper and it has nothing to do with gluten. My in-laws learned the hard way the first time I ate at their house and they thought I just didn't "like" pepper in my food. 3 hours in their bathroom and I think they're believers...
  8. Congratulations! Isn't just a wonderful feeling! It makes all the challenges so worth it. Great job!!!
  9. We are a primarily gluten free house. It works for us. There is gluten cereal that my husband occasionally eats at night after our son is in bed. That's it. I think it's easier on all of us. I'm busy enough that I would never have time to make separate meals. Keeping the gluten and non-gluten separate would be a huge headache for me. My husband likes...
  10. I don't think you'll find any Celiacs here who eat regular Corn Flakes or Rice Krispies. You will however find that many of us still refer to what we eat by their gluten names. So you may see a post for something like rice krispie treats, but what we really mean is gluten free treats made from a product like Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice. Same for "corn flakes...
  11. A local bakery by us uses it and their cookies are good, but I can't say that is from the Expandex. Can't say that it isn't either...
  12. Thanks for the post! I went out and bought a bag tonight. We used to get a taco pizza from our local pizza place that had Doritos broken up on top. We used to love that pizza! I bought the Kroger chips tonight and we're going to have a Valentine's taco pizza Saturday night! By the way, not only do they say they are a gluten free food, the package also...
  13. Something that helped me tremendously in the beginning with meals was to make a list of the things I knew how to make and then see what could still be made either the same or with some slight or even major modifications. I was surprised to find that I could make everything I used to be able to and now can make twice or three times as many dishes as I used...
  14. I wouldn't want my son taking something regularly, but I had read another article on a pill from Alvine Pharm. that sounds similar and my first thought was "Yay! A back up plan!" I think it would be nice to have a pill that could be taken when CC was an issue. For example...my son's (who is 9 mind you) wedding reception. I would still want a gluten-free...
  15. How wonderful!! That's what makes the gluten free diet so worthwhile!
  16. We started a ROCK group last summer for all the same reasons you're considering it. We're still a ROCK group of just one family! But my son so wants to meet other Celiac kids, so I'd say go for it! What we've done (and that obviously hasn't worked so great...yet!) is create a website, announce it here, announce it in our adult support group's newsletter...
  17. We are huge Disney fans! We are going again over spring break just for the restaurants. We're staying on the property, but we will not be going to the parks this trip (too crowded for our tastes). Where to stay?? There are so many good options! The All Star resorts are great if you're on a budget or if you plan to spend most of your time at the...
  18. You mentioned that you used to have yogurt for breakfast. You still can, Yoplait is gluten free and I'm sure there are many others as well (we eat Yoplait though, so I don't know about others). I think Stoneybrook Farms is, but you'd have to check to be sure. You lunch is still doable. Instead of fried chicken, bake up a whole chicken and then eat off...
  19. Oh, and that pizza keeps great for leftovers in the fridge and we've made pizzas the day before trips and then taken the whole cold pizza with us and warmed it up in the oven for our first night's dinner. I keep saying I'm going to try to freeze it, but we eat it too fast...
  20. This pizza recipe is fantastic! I make it weekly for our family. Exactly how good is it?? My son's 9 year old best friend's mom called me after he had pizza here a few times and said, "OK, I know it probably has tons of ingredients, but my son has been begging me to get your pizza recipe." He is NOT a Celiac. He just happens to think this gluten...
  21. It does take a lot of time in the beginning, but after a month or two you start to get the hang of it. If you have a Wal-Mart close by, they label their products really well. You just flip the product to the ingredient label and if you see GLUTEN FREE in bold letters you're good to go. Now I know that a lot of products, such as Del Monte peaches, are naturally...
  22. I'd go gluten-free for everyone. We've had many parties with gluten-free cakes and no one can tell. We use Kinnikinnick. Last summer we had several parties with gluten-free cakes and they were a hit! The only hiccup I've found with gluten free parties is that hamburgers and hot dogs make very easy mass crowd feeding alternatives and gluten-free buns aren...
  23. We haven't tried many so I don't know if it's "the best", but we like Kinnikinnick.
  24. I just use Wal-Mart's Great Values brand. It says gluten-free on the label. I've also used Eagle I believe for pumpkin pie, but I can't be positive on that. The ingredients are whole milk and sugar. I'd think it was pretty darn safe. I guess I'd put it in the same category as regular milk. I think it would be hard to CC it. I must warn you though...
  25. I agree, Gemini. I would like to add that another possible need for gluten free lotions, soaps, etc. is that they can get ingested. Chapstick/lipstick being the most obvious, but even with lotions the chance for ingesting is there. You lotion up your hands then start making supper and touching all the food. Or your little one gets soap or shampoo in their...
