  1. My son likes Tall Tree. They have iron and a lot more vits and mins than a lot of the other gluten-free ones I could find. We tried Freeda, but my son prefers the Tall Tree.
  2. We just discovered Trader Joes this summer. The closest one is almost 3 hours away though. We LOVE the kettle popcorn and dried fruit thingies (look like fruit roll up shaped packages, but they're really strips when you open them).
  3. I'm sending you and your daughter hugs. My son is 9 and I've already worried enough about college for a lifetime! My hubby reminds me that by the time our son is in college there will have been a great deal of changes (hopefully improvements) and my worrying is very premature. I'm still in the hovering stage where I think my mother and I are the only ones...
  4. This is my all time favorite pizza - gluten or no gluten! I make two each week for our pizza and a movie night. I use a pizza stone and bake a little longer on the first bake to get them a little crispier, but I prefer crispy crust pizzas. I even make my own sauce (sometimes I amazes me that I am the same person I was a year ago - when ordering a pizza...
  5. We eat really well around here. I'm not a Celiac, but I eat gluten-free 99% of the time and I am far from starving. What helped me a lot when we first started last December was making a big list of all the food I knew how to make (I wasn't much of a cook pre-diagnosis). Then I went through to see what was still OK and what needed adjusting. You asked...
  6. We really like the Ancient Harvest Quinoa pasta. I think it would probably be OK with just butter, but I never could understand how people ate that so I'm not a very good judge! Don't sweat that you are into the junk right now. We went through that phase too. I think it's normal. Those are the first things you think of when you say you have to...
  7. Mac & Cheese - Some here use the packets out of regular Kraft Mac & Cheese blue box (I'd make sure it's sealed well before you open it (so you know nothing got in) and wipe off the package a little before you open it. Also, some places sell just the cheese (I think it's in the popcorn section as they sell it as a popcorn topping). I've not tried...
  8. SugarSue, what foods is your daughter sad over? We might be able to help you find a really good substitute to surprise her with. We try really hard to focus on all the great foods our son can have - and he's tried so many foods he never would have before and really liked them. We all have. I am now addicted to LaraBars and Oskri Sesame Bars and I NEVER...
  9. We use Gluten Free Pantry Sandwich Bread mixes. The regular mix by itself is good for sandwiches and freezes pretty good. We also add cinnamon and raisins and drizzle it with a glaze made of powdered sugar and milk for a dinner bread/dessert. Also, Pamela's pancakes make excellent sandwiches. My son LOVES PB&J on Pamela's pancakes. For lunch...
  10. Isn't it just amazing and wonderful! Welcome to the rewards of gluten free parenting! Seeing your kids blossom is so incredible. I've said many times that our life was much harder pre-diagnosis, we just didn't know it! I know my son's life is so much better now. I'm so happy for you and your daughter (and her sister! ).
  11. Good luck! It's difficult at first, but it can become very doable. As for those Happy Meals - is it the food or the prize? For my son it was the prize. He asked me this summer if I'd get him a Happy Meal so he could have the Transformer prize he'd seen advertised. He got the apples and prize and I got a disgusting hamburger. I figured it was really...
  12. I know high cholesterol is no where near like Celiac, but I thought I might share a strategy that helped me. When I was diagnosed with extremely high cholesterol I was determined to get it under control. It was a huge shock for me. I've always been very active, under weight, and ate very healthy - except that after my 3 healthy meals a day I could really...
  13. We've found the same thing, Shay. His best friend's mom is always offering to send over Lunchables that she will pull the crackers out of when he comes for dinner. I always tell her I'll make sure he has something to eat that he likes and it's never an issue. She was totally shocked when he ate pork tenderloin with pears and mustard sauce. He ate seconds...
  14. I thought I'd post this because it thrilled me and I know how hard we all struggle with lunch. The other day my son wanted something "hot" for lunch. So my mom said she'd take him lunch and he asked her to stay and eat with him (this is very common at our school - parents or grandparents having lunch with kids). So I made him some Bell Evans chicken nuggets...
  15. I ran into a similar type of call to Coca Cola regarding their Minute Maid Lemonade. The woman told me all of their drinks were gluten free down to 200 PPM. I asked if the natural flavors in the lemonade were from a gluten source and was told no, but they couldn't guarantee past 200 PPM. It was a call like yours and it ticked me off so much that we now...
  16. If you get the job you may have to tell everyone here when they have openings!! That's wonderful news. You have to be so relieved. I hope you get the job!!!
  17. Rya, isn't that just a wonderful idea! When we were first diagnosed I became determined to start a ROCK group one day and then to offer up the buddy system for grocery shopping (once I knew what I was doing of course). Those first few trips to the store are awful! I cried through most of the store the first time - I'm sure people thought I was completely...
  18. My son is the Celiac and I can tell you I've cried enough for a lifetime since December. Everyone is absolutely correct, you need to let yourself grieve. But when you're done, you need to pick yourself up off the floor and move on. There will always be struggles, but they really do get easier. I promise. Now for those stragies you asked about. One...
  19. I haven't tried any of them yet, but I've seen several recipes for just such a thing posted. Try searching for cheese cracker recipe and goldfish recipe. My son likes the Glutino Cheddar, but they aren't as cheesy tasting as Cheese-Its and they are round and about the size of a Ritz.
  20. Thank you for all the great suggestions. Here's how the rest of the afternoon went... I looked for gluten free graham crackers for the whole class. None available locally. Checked online found a couple brands and decided to try Grainless Baker - based on reviews they sounded like a good bet. Unfortunately they couldn't get them delivered here until...
  21. The science teacher just sent me an email. The science teacher from last year has donated the following items for an edible plant cell activity to do on MONDAY. He wanted me to make substitutions. HELP! Cell Wall- Graham Crackers - they only need 2 sections Chloroplasts- Green M&M's (only 2) Nucleus- Whopper (just 1) Mitochondria- Black Jelly...
  22. Blue Bunny has a birthday cake as well. Really does taste like cake! My son loves it, but I have a hard time with cake having the texture and cold of ice cream! For those of you missing cake...Kinnikinnick's chocolate and white cakes are fabulous and I've yet to find anyone who could tell they weren't made with wheat flour. And for those missing...
  23. Your wheat free question has been addressed, but I thought I'd comment on your dressing. We're still fairly new, but we use Hidden Valley Ranch dressing regularly. My son loves EVERYTHING better if it's dipped in ranch! But if there's any chance your existing dressing has been contaminated, buy new. That goes for anything in the fridge. For example...
  24. OK, I feel better. If I'd taken time to not panic and thought for a second I'd have figured it out...I'd have still second guessed myself, but I'd still have figured it out! I want people to ask me before they give him things, but sometimes it makes me worry that I've missed something. Thanks for the quick responses.
  25. So I've been humming along feeling pretty confident in the new lifestyle and my ability to know gluten-free from not-gluten-free. Then my mom asked me this morning if she needed to buy a specific brand of pork tenderloin for dinner this evening. Uh oh. I haven't been checking meat at all - we buy only "plain" meat, not marinated or anything. Should...
