  1. It sounds like you're comfortable with her diagnosis already. Some people need the biopsy results to accept the diagnosis and go gluten free. I agree totally with Fiddle Faddle on calling the GI office. If her blood tests were positive the only thing left for them to do is a biopsy. They could schedule that without actually seeing her (which could greatly...
  2. Sorry, but according to Quaker, she should skip the rice cakes. Quaker is pretty up front about their gluten - they come right out and tell you that their products are not safe for Celiacs. It's a shame too because they make the best rice cakes (IMO). Shay is right, your daughter is going to have to accept that she is different. But you'll be able to...
  3. Don't you just LOVE Amazon's subscriptions! Of course the good prices cause me to buy lots, but I've yet to throw anything gluten-free away. We seem to go through food so fast around here! I just ordered Fruitabus, Oskri Sesame bars, and Stretch Island Fruit Leathers through subscriptions today. And they'll all be gone before the next order comes! ...
  4. Ok, are you using this coconut oil for...what...anything I would be using canola oil for?? I'm starting to get into this whole cooking thing - never knew I'd enjoy it so much until my son's diagnosis sent me to the kitchen. Same question for coconut flour? I supposed I should just do a search for recipes, but I thought I throw it out here. If you...
  5. Well I'm only going to get worse! We just tried Whole Foods 365 Days chocolate chip cookie mix tonight - oh my gosh! Those were great cookies (yes, I'm going to get a reputation as the gluten-free junk food junkie! - and yes, it is my son who is the Celiac!). Anyway, the cookies were out of this world and Whole Foods is 3 hours away. I bought them out...
  6. Hard boiled eggs Hormel (and other brands, but we love Hormel Deli Style) deli meats and cheese Apples with peanut butter Larabars On the weekend make a couple pizzas (it takes me about 1 hour to make two pizzas, which includes bake time) - eat one, keep the other for leftovers (unlike our old gluten pizzas, I find our gluten-free recipe tastes just as...
  7. We were going to an all inclusive water park for a day with my son last spring break. I called numerous times to discuss the meal situation. They have a policy of no outside food in the park. On one of my calls I thought I had really explained myself well and this time the woman was going to check on the exact menu (previous calls had always ended in them...
  8. We just bought some Soy Crispettes from Whole Foods Market a couple weeks ago for the first time. My son has been begging to try them, but I have been getting cold feet. I don't know why. They look safe, but for some reason I was nervous. I'm glad I saw your post. If we do try them I'll have him go slow with them.
  9. My son has been glutened (that we know for sure about) 2 times since going gluten-free in Dec. (Disregarding everything in January, because I'm sure we made mistakes and didn't even know it!) The first time was from a small amount of cheddar flavored popcorn salt that he ate before I checked online and saw that they clearly stated it contained gluten. ...
  10. Oh my gosh!! I had to check out this post because I was just telling DH that I have a serious food buying "issue". I won't say problem, because I understand why I do what I do and it doesn't seem like a "problem," but I know I buy a lot of stuff - just in case... Well as I read the earlier posts I started thinking about all the cereal I buy by the case...
  11. Thanks, Mary! My son loves BBQ. I assumed any pre-made stuff wouldn't be gluten-free. I've made it twice with left over pork tenderloin, but we don't usually have leftovers and my "quickie" version isn't as good as "real" BBQ. Thanks!
  12. We use a lot of replacements to keep our son's diet yummy and as similar to his old diet as possible. I make gluten free chocolate chip cookies and M&M or cookies regularly (and they are fabulous - you cannot tell they are gluten free except that they are softer than my old recipe and they dry out faster - which then makes them better for dipping in...
  13. We've tried 3 different kinds of hot dogs (Hebrew National, Ball Park, and I think the first was Boar's Head - all gluten free) and my son has had diarrhea the next day. As we've only been gluten-free since Dec. and still learning every day, I wasn't sure if it was really the hotdogs or if it was something else. After the last try I have decided there's...
  14. I'm so sorry for you and Gabe and even your mom too. I'm sure she feels awful, but I think it's a good thing you let her see what he's like. Seeing is believing and will make a lasting impression. Hang in there...time will cure this!
  15. The dust has settled. We've talked and I believe he was nervous about the bus ride. He normally LOVES the bus ride, but with the D in the morning and then the bad cramping the afternoon he just got nervous. We have the new system and he seems to understand. Call if you HAVE to come home. Call if you want mom to pick you up instead of riding the bus....
  16. OK, he's home now. He said he was fine after he called me, but before he went to the office his stomach hurt a lot. He said he had tried to wait it out, but it was really bad cramping. Then he said it just went away. I'm sure the new teacher (that I just met yesterday after school to explain things) was thrilled. I guess that's what my biggest problem...
  17. UGH! It's the second full day of school and we're already in trouble! My son had diarrhea this morning but after one big incident he felt much better. So I sent him to school with instructions to call me if it came back. Well he just called. No D, but he said his stomach has been cramping up really bad and then stopping and then starting up again. He...
  18. Green Eyes, my son had to have a blood test a few months after we started the diet. And they told us to expect annual blood tests. You know, now that some time has passed, I'm more settled about the whole thing. He definitely had "changes" in his bowels that week. I had prayed like crazy that he wouldn't get too sick. He was so pathetic sobbing in...
  19. I don't have Celiac and started late. Then I went through years of annual periods instead of monthly. I too went on to have a child and very normal "regular" life. Really don't sweat this yet. 14 isn't that old. A close friend of our family is a pediatrician and she said there is a lot of research on kids going through puberty much earlier these days...
  20. Thanks, everyone! We went wild at both stores. And as an added bonus, there as a woman there who heard us talking about gluten free to the clerk and her daughter wrote a cookbook that she happened to have in the car. We bought one from her! Obviously I haven't tried any recipes yet, but it was full of good info for a newbie like myself plus the recipes...
  21. I use Janet's recipe all the time (with the 8 cups of powdered sugar). My aunt has made fancy cakes (birthdays, weddings, anniversaries) for years and this is the recipe she gave me. And she never uses the milk because she doesn't want to have to keep is cold and she won't leave milk frosting out of the fridge for any length of time. She and I do up the...
  22. This is exactly what I wanted! Keep those ideas coming. I'm making a list! Thank you so much!!
  23. It was a white cheddar flavored topping. I don't remember the name and the bottle is long since thrown away! It was purchased pre-diagnosis and he and a friend found it. He thought to ask, unfortunately it was after eating some. I checked their website and only two of their many flavors contained gluten - cheddar and jalapeno. The rest were fine. And...
  24. I just found out that our travels this weekend are going to take us right by a Trader Joe's and a Whole Foods Market. We don't have either of these stores anywhere near us. I've read posts from others referencing these stores. Are there any items they carry that anyone really loves that we should be sure to pick up? Our health food store has some of...
  25. Well isn't that odd! I just assumed Celiacs would react the same way every time, except maybe with varying degrees of severity depending on how much gluten they actually got. Just when I think I've figured this disease out!
