  1. What a great comeback!!!
  2. Momma Goose, Try putting a marshmallow (for s'mores use only really) in the microwave for about 11 seconds. You have to stay close and watch it. As soon as it starts to get big, you pop open the door and roll it between the cracker/cookie and chocolate pieces (sort of clam shell pick it up action). And voila! An indoor s'more. I used to do the roasting...
  3. When I called Hershey at Easter the rep I spoke with was really helpful. She went through every candy I gave her and told me gluten-free or not. It isn't as helpful as Wonka/Nestle who sent me a list and coupons (just received those today!), but my experience was very positive. I wonder if I just got a really friendly person...
  4. Thanks! Johnsonville's website said gluten free, but I saw that other posts mentioned possible CC issues. I appreciate the info!
  5. My search on Johnsonville brats only turned up older posts. Johnsonville says their regular brats are gluten-free. Does anyone eat them regularly and find them safe? Are there any others you could recommend?? Thanks!
  6. My son was diagnosed in Dec. He ate like crazy for a month or two. He still eats quite a bit, but those first weeks were crazy! I'd make an omlette, fruit, and pancakes for breakfast, pack this huge bulging lunch box, give him a snack after school, a huge dinner and snack before bed! Someone told me it was the "making up for lost time" period. I believe...
  7. From the mother I called after her 9 year old son and another boy threw a piece of bread on my Celiac son's lunch at school: "Well your son was making light of it (Celiac) and joking that the bread was poison to him." And yes, it's been over 5 months since the incident and it still really burns me! But I digress...this was supposed to be a funny thread...
  8. Kudos to you!! Great job on a HUGE task! My mom and I were just saying today at lunch that we've got "at home" down pat. It's outside our houses that is hard. Even eating out at a restaurant is tough, let alone a trip, let alone a trip without us around! Great job on all the extra effort. Now rest up for that scout trip!
  9. Looney, We all sound so strong and wise right now, don't we? Well rest assured we'll need you to help us through a tough time, a sad time, a mad time or whatever down the road. I've learned that being a Celiac mom has a lot of ups and downs. Coming here is an awesome way to make it through both!
  10. I completely understand what you want for your son. I have th same feelings. Let me tell you school offers up a whole new world of "being different". Every birthday party or school treat event means you're heading to the kitchen or the store in hopes that your child can at least HAVE cake, forget about it actually being the same as everyone elses. My...
  11. I'm so sorry you had to go through a night terror! I think every parent should be told about night terrors BEFORE they happen. The first time my son had one we were at my parents and it scared all of four of us adults tremendously. We had given him an asthma breathing treatment for the first time that night and we were all convinced it had done something...
  12. We thought our son might have a lactose problem and started using Lactaid milk for awhile (turned out not to be a problem). The Lactaid milk wasn't that pricey (not like the rice, soy, almond milks). It tastes a little sweeter than regular milk, but is definitely still "milk" tasting. When we decided to reintroduce dairy we went slowly and mixed regular...
  13. I could've written your post 6 weeks ago! Here's what I've learned since: I finally called the gastro about the loose stools. It was making me crazy and when we were on vacation in FL they hardened right up. I got to thinking that while on vacation he ate a lot fewer fresh veggies and fruit than at home. So we did a trial one weekend - no produce for...
  14. The cake turned out terrific! I wouldn't even have known it was gluten free had I not baked it myself! Thanks again for your help!
  15. Thank you! I LOVE this board and everyone here! I was standing in the kitchen in a panic (of course we're having company for dinner and I decide NOW to scrutinize my recipe) and thought...THE BOARD! Surely someone will be on there that knows the answer! I thought they did the same, but I'm very new to this and have only made one other cake not from...
  16. I'm making a cake (for tonight of course!) and the recipe calls for 1.5 cups of gluten-free flour mix. It says to add xanthum gum if flour mix doesn't have it. I'm using Beth's flour (which has guar gum). Do I still add the xanthum gum even thought Beth's has guar gum or does the guar take care of it? I also have Bob's Red Mill flour mix I could use...
  17. I just went through this a couple months ago. Heinz looked OK to me on the label, but when I called they said it was NOT gluten free. Wal-Mart's generic brand (Great Values) says Gluten Free on the label. Enjoy!
  18. OK, yesterday I bought Mr. Krispers baked rice crisps and 2 boxes of Blue Diamond nut thins (ranch and cheddar) to replace the ranch and cheddar Quaker mini rice cakes my son used to adore. Then I saw the "manufactured in a facility..." warning. As we're new to this (DX in Dec), I don't want to chance a CC. He's made so much improvement and we want to...
  19. Chasing4, Your doctor has given you some bum advice, I'm sorry to say. A low-gluten diet won't help a Celiac. The long term damage is still being done. You saw the short term repercussions of the cupcake. What you didn't see was the immune response the cupcake started and the damage it did to her small intestines. It will take months for that to heal...
  20. Too funny! Having nothing to do with gluten, but a squirrel story to add...this week I thought a squirrel died before my eyes! I had been watching a squirrel at the bird feeder through my office window while talking on the phone. I glanced away and next time I looked back he was on his stomach with his front legs and back legs spread straight out ...
  21. From what I've read your lactose intolerance may only be temporary. Once the gut heals you may be able to return to dairy. I freaked out when we were hit with this as well. Cheese and milk were huge parts of his diet. I know many on the forum would suggest eliminating all dairy, but our ped GI and Celiac dietician suggested trying Lactaid. Once we...
  22. I'm sure you're going to get a lot of responses to this! Your doctor is correct on the gluten. Once you eliminate gluten from the diet his gut will begin to heal. There is really no point to going through the scope process if he hasn't been eating gluten because the results won't be accurate. But, from what I've read the tests are not 100% reliable in...
  23. Larrymac, You have to try other flavors! A chocoholic myself, I didn't care for the chocolate ones. Lemon is high on my list. Apple are pretty good. Key lime are very good. Cashew I didn't like at all. But cherry...oh the cherry!! They are fantastic! I actually have been limiting myself to 2 a day! In fact, I just came into the office to order...
  24. Larry you make me laugh!! We have an almost gluten free home. (I'm still trying to use up gluten cereal that I bought pre-Celiac. Yes, I have learned I have a bluk cereal buying problem. We know have 20 million boxes of gluten free cereal too! But I digress). I know this is an older post, but I wanted to add that I share your anxiety - and I don't have...
  25. And if you really want that Oreo, get a K-Too chocolate sandwich cookie. I couldn't taste the difference. You said you don't want to settle for second best. By not trying some of the many, many products out there you're missing out! Lots of the gluten-free foods are (in the opinion of myself, my son, my husband and many posters) better than gluten foods...
