  1. My son LOVES Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal. We're relatively new to gluten-free life (diagnosis in Dec.). My son rarely has what I call "normal" bm's, but otherwise we've seen huge changes in him since going gluten-free. It's weird because it was the loose bowel movements that took us to the doctor and it looks like those just might not go away...
  2. Hang in there! You are going to feel so much better! I know it seems very overwhelming at first, but it really does get better. My son (he's 8 and was diagnosed right before Christmas last year) was just saying this morning how much he loved Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal and that if we'd never found about him having Celiac he would never have...
  3. Hang in there! It really well get easier and you'll be surprised how quickly you adjust. My son was diagnosed in Dec and our house has been almost entirely gluten free (except for cereal that I bought pre-diagnosis - who could believe I had stocked up so much cereal!!) ever since. We still have our down moments, but I'm amazed at how far we've come in...
  4. What about Red Lobster or a steak restaurant? Or what would he think about a fancy meal at home prepared by you? Could you give him and his date the house alone for an hour? (I don't know if that is even a consideration these days, I'm just tossing out "out of the box" ideas.) My son is 8 and I've already been fretting about the dating scene. As if I...
  5. We're new to this, my son was diagnosed in Dec. (I swear I start every post with that line!) We've been to friends homes twice in that time. Once was to a very dear friend who worked really close with me to plan the menu, how to cook it, etc. She was absolutely great and the evening was terrific. She kept everything gluten free so there would be no problems...
  6. My 8 year old son was just diagnosed in December. We also lived through 8 years of leg pain, stomach pain, loose stools, dark circles, fatigue, runny noses, etc. Hind sight is 20/20. When I list it all out like that it looks like a big brick about to hit someone, but taken individually we (several doctors included in that "we") didn't see it. Try not...
  7. We just returned as well. I posted some of our experience here: Open Original Shared Link. We had the best vacation I could imagine. My son was actually healthier stomach-wise than he's been at home. Which is depressing, but that's another topic! I can't wait to go back to Disney!!
  8. We just returned today from Disney World and I couldn't wait to get back to share our experience with you all! It was AMAZING! I was so nervous to go. Our son was diagnosed in December. Since then we've eaten out two times, so the thought of a trip was very scary. We actually went for the Celiac-friendly restaurants versus the parks. The parks during...
  9. Your comment about pizza being one of her staples causes me to want to interject some very unscientific thoughts. We've been struggling with our son having occassional setbacks over the course of his 3 months of gluten-free life. I've bounced all over as to the cause, so that's where the definitely unscientific part comes in. But we keep coming back to...
  10. This is our second holiday gluten-free. Christmas was the first and my DS had only been gluten-free for a couple of weeks. My way of dealing with it was to have everyone at our house for a gluten-free meal for one family gathering and to eat before going to the second family gathering. Easter is 4 days away and I still haven't come up with a plan for...
  11. Thank you so much for this post!! My son has been having terrible intestinal issues for the last two weeks. I was convinced it was pizza (specifically the cheese) and took him off all dairy Saturday. His symptoms aren't better and I was ready to pull my hair out. I just happened to decide to check the BRM Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal here and found this post...
  12. OK, we've mulled it over and decided we want to start a kids support group. I have the information from Danna Korn on ROCK. Does anyone have any advice for how to start, what to do, what you like in your group, what you'd like in a group if you could have one? We're new to Celiac, but I'm not one to sit idly by when I see a need. My son has said he...
  13. I agree! Why do they have to be so difficult?!?! We aren't out to steal their recipes. We'd just like to buy their products! Please keep the lists coming...I'm still thinking about putting Lego pieces in the eggs (my son LOVES Legos), maybe some coins, but you have to have some candy. Although, as scared as I've been lately about what he eats maybe...
  14. Thanks! We'll omit Frito Lay. He's not much of a chip eater anyway. Has always preferred Quaker rice cakes...which look to be a possible source of cross contamination too, so I've already stopped buying those. I guess we'll use gluten-free pretzels for those rare occassions. It's healthier anyway, right. And we already got rid of the Aunt Jemima...
  15. My son was diagnosed in Dec. Since then we've had 3-4 suspected glutenings. Can anyone tell me if they've had any trouble with any of the following? I thought they were all OK, but now I'm wondering... Aunt Jemima syrup - I just found out Pinnacle won't commit to gluten free, but they said there is no gluten in the ingredients, but there may be CC...
  16. OK, I'm not nuts, just tired. My last post sounds nutty! I was searching for Easter candy ideas and got two threads mixed up. I thought it was this thread that said Cadbury eggs were gluten-free. Obviously it wasn't! It was an old from LAST March (and my post made much more sense with that thread!). Duh! Well, anyway, the eggs are still not safe...
  17. I tried to make this a new topic on the Coping forum in case someone didn't check back, but it automatically got moved. So I hope you all catch this. The Cadberry Creme Egg label says "Glucose Sugar (Wheat)". I'm a newbie to this, so maybe I'm missing something, like that in the form of glucose sugar the gluten is taken out, but if not, DON'T EAT THE...
  18. I was just reading the Easter candy thread and read the post about Cadberry Creme Eggs being gluten-free. Their label says "Glucose Sugar (Wheat)". I'm a newbie to this, so maybe I'm missing something like that in the form of glucose sugar the gluten is taken out, but if not, DON'T EAT THE EGGS!! I started a new topic because I was afraid some people might...
  19. CADBERRY CREME EGGS ARE NOT GLUTEN FREE!! We just picked them up two weekends ago and checked the label. It says right on it Glucose Sugar (WHEAT). You can double check, but I just went and read the label again. Sorry...
  20. Our house is gluten free as well (with the exception of cereal that I eat after his bedtime because it's cheaper than gluten-free cereal). I couldn't handle a mixed household. CC stresses me out too much. And with all the adjustments to increased cooking, I didn't want the extra hassle of being extra careful/extra cleaning, etc. This way I don't freak...
  21. Yippee for his poop pains!! As parents of Celiacs we truly do get excited about some strange stuff!
  22. Danna Korn's Celiac Kids book is terrific. My 8 year old was diagnosed in December and I didn't get the book until mid-January and I wish I'd bought it sooner. It would've helped with a lot of things. We've been doing this almost 3 months and I can tell you it really does get easier. I'm actually kind of Mary Poppinsey about the whole thing most of...
  23. This is great info! My hubby started gluten-free last Friday and he has been...well...not at his best. When our son went gluten-free his mood greatly improved. I guess I was expecting a repeat of that. I was thinking it was just anxiety and being overwhelmed, but maybe it is withdrawl. His first blood test came back neg. (we're waiting on second test...
  24. And let's not forget that with Celiac we're not just talking about feeling sick for a few days. There's the increased risk of cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and all the other really horrible stuff if you cheat regularly. I think that's the part that is hard for a lot of people to grasp. I think that's one of the reasons that forums like this are so helpful...
