  1. The whole school lunch scene is in need of help. I frequently visit or volunteer in the cafeteria, and it's such a sad health situation. Gradeschoolers bringing pop in their lunches. Hot lunches that get the dessert eaten and most of the rest sent to the garbage can. Unopened milks in the garbage (although they do have a table where the kids can put their...
  2. Kara's Mom, do the vitamins have iron? My son really doesn't like meat, so I tried to find a vitamin with iron. We have the Vitalets by Freeda, but he doesn't really care for them (but he likes them better than meat, so he eats them! ).
  3. I contacted Buffalo Wild Wings and received the following email. THEN I thought to check the forum. Here's info from Buffalo Wild Wings in case anyone is interested: Thank you for contacting us concerning gluten in our menu items. Marzetti produces all our dressings and sauces and cannot guarantee that any of the Buffalo Wild Wing dressings or sauces...
  4. Kimmyj, I can't offer any real help. I don't have Celiac. But I did breastfeed my son (who was just diagnosed with Celiac - he's 8 and a half). Here's what I can tell you: Breastfeeding was an amazing experience for me. I never would've dreamed it would have mattered that much to me. I ended up nursing him until he weaned himself at 2 years...
  5. OK, what a doof! (the PE teacher) "Way to go! Let's celebrate! You watch the rest of us pig out on ice cream for all your hard work!!" Your daughter should be commended and you as well! That's so neat that she wanted to be the winner for that adn you for raising her! It's a pitty the teacher didn't come up with a better celebration. They could...
  6. Our school carnival is coming up. We live in a fairly small community and the carnival is a big deal. In previous years we've eaten supper at the carnival. This is our first year gluten-free, and we have no intention of eating a meal there, but they are having a sno cone machine and cotton candy (pre-packaged, not made on sight). Does anyone know anything...
  7. I don't have advice, just kind words...hang in there. You may not have support at home, but you have it here. A previous poster is right - you don't need to spend money on books. Just hang out around here and ask lots of questions. We're new to the Celiac family (Dec. '07) too, but I can tell you I've stopped crying (mostly) and am doing much better....
  8. Thanks, Rachelle! We don't have a local ROCk group - just the adult support group. I was actually thinking of trying to start one. As a newbie I don't feel exactly "qualified" to be a "Celiac leader", but I am confident I could handle the organization part. I own a small business and am a very active volunteer in our community, so that part sounds...
  9. Do any of you belong to ROCK groups or other support groups for kids? If so, do you find them beneficial for your child? If you don't belong to one, do you think you'd like to? We are new to the Celiac family (Dec. 07). Our son is 8 and doing wonderfully on the diet - both mentally and physically. But I think my son might benefit from a peer group. ...
  10. I was just reading this week about breastfeeding and Celiac. The article said that research seems to be showing that breastfeeding can lessen some of symptoms of Celiac - specifically growth symptoms. I know we are just one case, but I nursed my son until he was 2. He's now 8 1/2 and was just diagnosed in December. One of the things that doctors kept...
  11. I'll chime in too that the day to day does get easier. We've been gluten-free since mid-December and it already is MUCH easier. And our 8 year old is so much healthier and happier. We had gone through the diagnosis process saying that if he did have Celiac he must have a really mild case because he was a happy, healthy, "thriving" kid. (We didn't know...
  12. My son was diagnosed in Dec, so I too am new to this. I'm usually very upbeat and positive because it's been so wonderful to see him become healthy, but he has been glutened again this week (he was also glutened two weeks ago and a week prior to that). How do you go about finding where the glutening happens? He only eats at home, my parents', and his own...
  13. I read about Gluten Free Sensations with another group. As a new Celiac mom, I thought I'd give them a try. Their cookies are terrific! My son and I ate way too much dough and then way too many cookies, but we couldn't help ourselve (or each other for that matter!). The dough looked and tasted like gluten cookie dough. The cookies are a little more fragile...
  14. Maybe try ranch dressing (we use Kraft) for the veggies. How about fruit? You mentioned he likes pizza. There are gluten free pizza crusts and crust mixes, so you can probably keep that for him. My son likes gluten-free just as well as regular pizza. You'd probably have to order the xanthum gum, but your health food store might have it. You'll only...
  15. My son's appetite went through the roof. He literally cannot eat enough during his school lunch period sometimes! Where he used to eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast, he now eats cereal PLUS an omlette! I personally think my son's stomach/body has been talking to him his whole life. He never liked breaded anything - chicken nuggets, shrimp, etc. He wouldn...
  16. Welcome! I'm the mother of a newly diagnosed 8 year old, so I've recently been right where you're at, but now I'm in a much better place! My son is doing so much better and has turned into this even greater kid than he was before! So get excited! OK, pep talk aside, here's my best practical advice: Cereal - Little Einsteins and Mickey Mouse Club...
  17. Eating out is something we've only done 2 times since our son was diagnosed and it was very stressful for me. When you say a gluten free restaurant, what do you mean? A real live Celiac restaurant or just a Celiac friendly restaurant?
  18. Oops! I forgot about that! I was in a hurry and it feels so good to be able to help someone instead of being helped!
  19. Oh, I forgot to include in my "book" about rice crispy treats. Erwhon crispy rice tastes just like Kellogg's version and is gluten free. My son loves them. For an added treat drizzle them with melted milk chocolate (I use Nestle's milk chocolate chips). And Lame Advertisement has them for less than 1/2 the price of our natural foods store and if you buy...
  20. Mindy, We are just 2 months into the diet and let me tell you it's gets so much easier! Once you start to see your daughter turn into this amazing new kid who feels good, acts better, enjoys life more, you'll gladly do it. I still have a long way to go to, but like I said, it's getting easier. I still feel like I'm at the grocery store every day (and...
  21. My son was just diagnosed in Dec. (this is my first post), and we have had a similar experience. One of his classmates has had a pizza party at school for his birthday every year since kindergarten (the boys are in 3rd grade now). His b-day isn't until May, but when his Mom found out about our son she immediately set out to find a different idea for the...
