  1. OK, just saw the Papa John's ad. That really seems in poor taste. Is Dunkin Donuts next? Why would they do that??
  2. Anyone know of some places where you can get safe gluten-free food in the downtown St. Louis area and near Six Flags?
  3. And my understanding is that these are a SEPARATE and NEW product. The old non-gluten-free ones will still be out there, but they will have a gluten-free version too.
  4. Thanks! I thought Crunch & Munch was gluten-free! We haven't had it in a long time though... So glad to have read your post before grabbing it again!
  5. I was one who responded. I'm so glad you had a great time!! We absolutely LOVE Disney. We just returned from Disney's Vero Beach resort. OH. MY. GOSH. They spoiled our son beyond belief. I mean totally and thoroughly spoiled him! Chef Kevin was amazing and Chef Mike did his best to keep up what Kevin started! I couldn't believe how they took care...
  6. Having no scientific basis for this, but I'd homeschool parents would be more intune to what is going on with their kids. You're with them all day - you're going to notice bathroom visits, smelly gas, fatigue, behaviour issues more quickly than those who don't see their kids as often. Being around other parents to share thougths an concerns with has to...
  7. We made Jules chocolate chip cookies from her mix and only baked a few of them! I thought I was being a good girl and freezing the dough in balls for later baking...um, no. Everyone kept eating them straight out of the freezer!
  8. Definitely notice behavior/mood here. It's scary, because he becomes so depressed. When your 9 year old tells you he doesn't want to live any more you start to panic. He's such a happy, go lucky, positive kid that we've thankfully been able to help him through it by pointing out that he has probably been glutened. His depression and anxiety are our first...
  9. We rely heavily on our thermos (got it at Wal-mart). I use it for leftovers - chicken with rice & gravy, fried rice, lasagna, mac & cheese, etc. Oh, and scrambled eggs. My son loves tuna salad (tuna and mayo) with potato chips to scoop it with. Here are some others. Lunch meat and cheese rolls Hard boiled eggs Canned turkey with ranch dressing...
  10. Fresh bread crumbs or Ener-G bread crumbs for us. Mostly Ener-G. I tried another brand with baked cod a few weeks ago and no one liked it. Ener-G has good texture for breaded fish, chicken, pork chops, etc. Two thumbs up from us.
  11. I resisted my hubby's suggestion for a toaster oven years ago (long before Celiac was part of our life). We bought one about a year and half ago and I LOVE IT! I think it would be good for gluten-free or not gluten-free, but I particularly like it for our gluten-free world. I use it for: gluten-free cookies - as you know, gluten-free cookies have...
  12. Kix doesn't contain gluten ingredients, but is not tested and is not made in a gluten-free facility. I've read on this board that many people eat them, but we won't give them to our son. I think the opportunity for CC is too high.
  13. For those looking for deals on food... The Disney Dining plan is $40 for an adult for the day. It includes: 1 snack (gluten-free brownie, drink, chips, popcorn, frozen treat, yogurt, piece of fruit, fresh fruit bowl, veggies & dip bowl, etc. all count as one snack), 1 Quick Service meal (includes drink, entree, and dessert - all entrees we've ever...
  14. Oh, and not all, but many restaurants and resort food courts have dedicated gluten-free Mickey waffle irons! Waffles shaped like Mickey heads are always a hit!
  15. The dietary email for WDW: WDW.Special.Diets@disney.com They can email you several (there were 7 files in my latest email from them) files with information on gluten free at the parks and resorts. You can and should also stop at the customer service center at each park as soon as you get there and ask for the gluten free listings. I find these can...
  16. You didn't mention soup, but my little kiddo really likes egg drop soup. It's also my "go-to" soup for when he's sick. I always have the ingredients on hand and it's super easy. Egg Drop Soup 4 cups chicken broth 2 egss well beaten (I actually up this to 4 eggs because he LOVES the egg part best) 2/3 tsp salt (less or more depending how salty your...
  17. I don't have Celiac, but do have high cholesterol. What works for me when I get tempted is to picture myself 10, 20 years down the road doing things I really want - being at my son's wedding, holding a newborn grandchild, etc. Then I picture what those days will be like for my son without me in them (dead from heart disease). The donut, cookie, etc. doesn...
  18. Oh my!!! We just went to a gluten free food fair and they had samples of Canyon Bakehouse breads and buns. I have to tell you that I completely panicked when I tried it - after my son already had. He has Celiac. I do not. This bread tastes so much like gluten bread that I was truly afraid he had just eaten a big hunk of gluten. You've probably all been...
  19. You certainly can grind them up and use them as flour. As for bread, this recipe is out of this world. It's my "go-to" bread for when we're having non-gluten free company over because everyone loves it and no one can tell it's gluten-free. As a variation, I've also added cinnamon and raisins for a little different twist. Truly delicious bread! (And now...
  20. Do searches for specific questions and then don't be afraid to ask questions you don't find answers to - do watch the dates on your search results. So much as been learned about Celiac. The internet doesn't forget though, so there is a lot of mis-information out there still.
  21. As a parent of child with Celiac, I couldn't agree more with everything you said! It's wonderful when it's yourself, it's a miracle beyond words when it's your child who doesn't have cancer, doesn't need surgery, can laugh, can stay up past 7:00, can run on the soccer field, can get good grades, can grow up to be a healthy, happy person!
  22. Salax, I have an amazing gluten-free donut recipe that is pretty easy to make, kind of fun to make, and that can take you from craving a donut to never wanting to see another one again because you ate so many your stomach hurts in one hour! It does take buttermilk though...do have an alternative for milk in your OK list of foods?
  23. Tuna salad with potato chips for dipping into the tuna salad Chicken salad with grapes, apples, carrots, pecans in it Crepes! - Ham and Cheese rolled up inside them when they're warm, then packed cool to be warmed in the microwave (or eaten cold) Canned turkey with ranch dressing (like a tuna salad consistency) with crackers or chips for dipping PB&...
  24. Disney is the absolute BEST place to eat gluten free! At Disney World (never been to Disney Land) you can get desserts with meals! Imagine! The fall back dessert is a French Meadow brownie, but there are places that actually have fancy gluten free desserts as part of their regular menu!
  25. Things we do: I bake and cook A LOT! I supply pizza or cake or cookies or whatever for all of kiddo's functions/parties. In the beginning, I would make "special" cakes for the birthday parties he went to - decorate them in a special way, use his favorite color for the frosting, etc. This did backfire one time. I made a smiley face out of skittles on...
