  1. Spangler candy canes say they are made on dedicated equipment right on the package! Love Spangler!
  2. I've had the complete opposite response with my kiddo's friends. Just a few weeks ago we had the end of season soccer party. A lot of people had brought things, so I quickly made one table gluten-free and peanut free (we had a peanut allergic boy on the team) and the other table the "anything goes" table. The older boys who had been on our team before...
  3. So do you think there is a way to test for peanuts, shellfish and soy to make the claim a product doesn't contain them? I'm just curious...
  4. Yeah, I thought it sounded CYA. I was just really thrown off by the declaration that it was absolutely peanut, soy and shellfish free, but only "no quantifiable amount of gluten." Don't people understand when you have a sick kid the last thing you want to do is make them sicker!!!
  5. Dr. prescribed plain Sudafed for kiddo's post nasal drip. I called Johnson & Johnson and talked to a very nice customer care rep, but I'm still not sure on giving it to him. She said "there's no quantifiable amount of gluten in the product." When I asked if that means there could be a very small amount she said she had been trying to figure that out...
  6. We make the Libby's can recipe as well and just put it in the pie plate without a crust. I was really surprised how the pieces come right out like pie pieces even without a crust bottom.
  7. I just wanted to point out that at least in the U.S. there still is no "legal" definition of gluten free. Still waiting on that. Also, some things really can be totally gluten free. Different testing will show that something is "less than 5 PPM" or "less than 20 PPM." They can still be zero in reality, but the test only shows that they are less than...
  8. Homemade pizza! Family had had enough of the leftovers! We did have leftover fresh veggies though...and we polished off the leftover pies as well...
  9. Have you considered asking for an e-reader (Kindle, Nook, iPad, etc.) for Christmas? Sounds like you could quickly recover the costs by being able to download books so much cheaper than buying! At $100 a book the Nook looks cheap!
  10. We hosted an entirely gluten-free meal. And for the first time ever, I wasn't stressed in the least. Did whatever I could the day before and the rest the morning of and just relaxed. We had: Turkey Mashed Potatoes Gravy (cornstarch) Sweet Potatoes Cornbread casserole Green bean casserole (no onions on top) Roasted carrots Oatmeal bread Stuffing...
  11. We're a gluten-free household for our son as well. I was a terrible cook pre-diagnosis. If I can say it can be done, it definitely can! It's really not hard once you get past the first couple months of learning curve. We just hosted another Thanksgiving entirely gluten-free - stuffing, cornbread pudding, oatmeal bread (that everyone raved about and couldn...
  12. All gluten-free for us: Turkey & Gravy Mashed Potatoes Sweet Potatoes Stuffing Cornbread Casserole Green Bean Casserole Roasted Carrots Oatmeal Bread Cranberry Jello Salad Cranberry Relish Veggies & Dip Cheese & Crackers Pumpkin Pie Banana Cream Pie Pumpkin Cake Heavy on the carbs, calories, and taste! ...
  13. Here it is...DON'T BE INTIMIDATED BY IT! I put off making them for a long time becauce the recipe looked complicated. It's just explained in a lot of detail. They actually go together pretty easily. I only make them for holidays and special occasions - not because they're hard, but because they are very unhealthy! Just like a cinnamon roll should be...
  14. I'm not sure what I can say to actually cheer you up...does a deep GOBBLE! GOBBLE! do anything for ya?? I can tell you that tomorrow will be a better day...and you will have a wonderful holiday...maybe not this one, today, but you'll get one. Next time, for the kids try making them something really yummy and sugar filled that you wouldn't normally...
  15. Decent book...easy read. Main character's son has Celiac disease. The disease and his gluten-free diet come up regularly in the book. It highlighted some real social issues of the disease - birthday parties, bullying at school, etc. Also highlighted how Celiac can affect growth in children and how that affects their school life. It's not likely to win...
  16. Freeda makes gluten-free "healthy" vitamins for kids. Natural flavor, no sugar or artificial sweeteners, etc. They're more expensive than Flintstones though.
  17. Apple slices with carmel dip or carmel apples! "Trail mix" of marshmallows, M&Ms, raisins, Reese's Pieces, that sort of thing Crispy rice treats Vegetarian with or without dairy? If dairy is OK dirt cups made with chocolate pudding, crushed cookies on top with gummy worms coming out of the dirt.
  18. Open Original Shared Link This bread is fabulous! I also make it with raisins and cinnamon. Both are fantastic!
  19. If your oats are certified gluten free, you should be fine. We use Gifts of Nature and Glutenfreeda all the time. Literally my son eats oats almost every day of the week. Recently I discovered an amazing oat bread that is just fantastic. And monster cookies with oatmeal are incredible - and no off the wall ingredients - eggs, oats, peanut butter, and...
  20. You can make some things ahead of time, freeze them and then pack them in the suitcase with freezer packs. We've done this with bread and cookies for vacation. I'm sure it would work for other things, as the items are always still frozen when we get to the hotel. We just have to use a lot of freezer packs and an insulated carrier. I have a carrier that...
  21. I always send kiddo with his own individual gluten-free pizza and his own piece of cake. We make pizza once a week. It's really not that hard. If you mix up batches of the dry ingredients and put in ziplock bags it really doesn't take that long. As for the cake, when we have cake I always cut a few pieces, wrap them in plastic wrap, and then freeze them...
  22. Hard boiled eggs Tuna salad with potato chips or crackers (use as a dip) Peanut butter and jelly on a gluten-free pancake (Pamela's pancake mix is excellent) Canned turkey mixed with ranch salad dressing Apples and peanut butter lunch meat and sliced cheese rolled up Cheese and fruit Crepes with ham and cheese slices rolled up in them Crepes dipped...
  23. We had a mystery glutening a couple weeks ago. It's so frustrating to try to figure it out! Especially if, like our son, the symptoms show up a few days later... As for the Reese's, might be something else in there, but my son eats them without any problems - in fact, until two weeks ago I was happy to say it had been 2 years since a gluten incident...
  24. I don't remember exactly when our son's growth spurt hit, but I don't think it was in the first 3 months. In fact, I'm almost positive it wasn't that soon. And he really did grow a ton. I think it was more about the 6 month mark, because if I remember correctly it was between spring pants and fall pants that I noticed the huge change. He was 8 1/2 when...
  25. I was hesitant to try oats, but we saw a huge improvement in our son with oats in his diet. He needed more fiber! We buy Gifts of Nature and Glutenfreeda instant packets with flax (son loves that he can make these by himself and they come in flavors). He actually asks for oatmeal when his stomach is bothering him. I also just started grinding the oats...
