  1. I LOVE the subscribe and save. And right now they have a promo from General Mills going on that makes Chex and Betty Crocker mixes incredibly cheap! You do have to be careful with making sure you'll eat what you order. We had to throw away a bunch of stuff that expired because I went a little crazy. So much for that savings! The Kind bars and Lara...
  2. Donuts...they're evil little creatures, so full of fat and sugar...but oh so yummy!!! We bought a fry daddy just for donuts! We make donuts similar to what we used to get at the cider mill. Actually, I don't think anyone would ever be able to tell they weren't cider mill donuts. Since getting the fry daddy we've also made mozzarella sticks and just this...
  3. My son says Glutenfreeda's oatmeal with flax settles his D stomach. I also pump him full of yogurt. Not sure it helps, but at least I feel like I'm doing something to help. Get extra rest and try to clear your calendar as much as possible. Pamper yourself as much as possible...
  4. OK all you newbies, you CAN do this!! Because it is my son (and I feel I'm probably over-protective), unless it is my mom cooking we don't let others cook for our son. So these tips are all from the prospective of having to have complete control over the food... You can... 1) Take your own plate. If you like the traditional holiday meal that everyone...
  5. I believe the envelope glue thing is one of the mis-information items that gets passed around the internet so many times it becomes fact...despite not being fact. Right up there with poor old vinegar. As for dog treats, Nutro has a great line of blueberry, carrot, and apple flavored treats that are gluten-free.
  6. I second the Joan's vote. We love them. In fact, DH usually won't eat the gluten-free bread products (like Udi's) because they are so expensive (he doesn't have Celiac, but our house is gluten-free for our son). He can't resist Joan's! In fact, he usually eats two at a time! LOVE the cinnamon raisin ones. Yum, yum, yum. In fact, I think I'll go make...
  7. My son's ortho was able to check with manufacturer. The only thing they couldn't confirm was the flavoring. He just went with plain. I'm sure it wasn't the greatest tasting, but at least it was gluten-free. And it was only for a couple of minutes.
  8. That's awesome!! Way to go Mom!! gluten-free food really isn't nasty!! I get so many compliments. In fact, we had an end of season soccer party last weekend and the kids were all crowding around me saying things like, "What did you bring?? You always make the best food. Your cakes are awesome!" I even had a mom come over and say she had to try the...
  9. It sounds like you're doing just fine. It's hard to answer the question of what to stock in your pantry without knowing everythign your family likes. There really isn't a "pantry list" that fits every family. What a lot of people (myself included) relied on heavily in the beginning is to make out weekly menu each week and see what ingredients you'll...
  10. I think hubby and the other kids need to be a little more compassionate and to be more family oriented. They might just need you to show them how hard having Celiac can be. I'd find a time when your gluten-free son isn't home and have a serious talk. I'd find the most tempting, smelly foods imaginable that your gluten eating family loves and put them...
  11. Does anyone use Schwan's tater tots?
  12. What helped me most in the beginning for meals was to make a list of what I was already making for dinners or eating at restaurants and see what could be make gluten free with some minor adjustments or none at all. I was very surprised to see that I could still make almost everything I was before with very little changes. Pot roast, lasagna, spaghetti,...
  13. PB&J on pancakes - VERY easy to make, very yummy to eat, and very easy to use for a packed lunch...oh, and VERY much desired by the other kids! When my son first started taking them to school the other moms asked me what was up because their kids were asking for PB&J pancakes!
  14. According to our ped. GI, every time your son ingests gluten it will take his body and intestines about 2 months to forget that "little" cross contamination. There's no such thing as "mostly" gluten free. For your son's sake, your hubby needs to spend some time researching for himself how serious Celiac is. He's right, your son isn't going to go into anaphylactic...
  15. Saw this in a newsletter today...Allergy Eats is a new website (allergyeats.com) where you can enter your food "allergies" and zipcode and it shows you restaurants in your area with ratings and comments regarding their ability to handle your food sensitivity. Pretty cool! Especially for traveling! Our rural area had a little, but not much. But at least...
  16. While I am not 100% gluten free all the time, I do eat a large amount of gluten-free meals (our house is gluten-free for our son). I can tell you that even having gluten as often as I do I can definitely tell a difference when I eat gluten that I don't think existed before removing so much gluten from my system. It's not the intestinal symptoms so many...
  17. Go to meals: Mexican night - tacos, nachos, quesadillas Spaghetti LaChoy Chow Mein - I'm not a big fan, but my family loves it. It's not very healthy, but it is cheap and quick! Lasagna - We have a small family, so I make a 9x13, eat one meal's worth, then cut cool in fridge, then cut into individual pieces, wrap in Saran Wrap and freeze Fried Rice...
  18. Triple ditto (or whatever!) on the cereal. Rice Krispies are without a doubt not gluten free.
  19. Last time I checked Quaker said the large ones marked "Gluten Free" on the package were OK, but the small ones were NOT gluten free due to cross contamination or direct ingredients used.
  20. I just saw on another post that your daughter missed rice crispy treats. There is no need for her to miss those! Traditional ones made at home with gluten free crispy rice cereal are absolutely no different than if you made them with Kellogg's Rice Krispies - well except that they are gluten free! You can get the cereal off amazon using their subscribe...
  21. I hope Grace gets better with the disease. Have you found a local children's support group? It might really help her. If you can't find a kids one, at least try the adult one. My son is gushed over at the adult meetings. He's like the long lost grandchild. One thing that helps us a lot on the "down days" is to make a list of the things we wouldn't have...
  22. Yep, without a doubt. Pre-diagnosis extreme mood swings/irritability was one of my son's worst symptoms. He's only been glutened a couple times since being diagnosed 2.5 years ago, but each time his first symptom is a mood change. He becomes very down and irrationally upset by things. Lasts a couple days and then his intestinal symptoms kick in. Toss...
  23. We use Ancient Harvest Quinoa with good results.
  24. I've been wanting to try them filled with Nutella and fried then dusted with powdered sugar. Unfortunately I can't find them anywhere. I bet you could also do cream cheese and crab meat (like crab rangoon) then fried. I so wish someone would carry them around here!
  25. Is anyone using KC Masterpiece Original BBQ sauce without problems? There are several old threads and it seems to be one that comes up as questionable. We just took a cooking class that used it and I'm wondering if we can really eat what we made. Their website isn't very helpful and they don't have a phone number on the site (I don't have the bottle to...
