  1. Hi Everyone

I am a very infrequent poster but I am in need of some help.

I have Celiac Disease - dx 5 years ago and I am now concerned about my 2. 5 year old. He has always been in the 50% for growth since birth and really isn't seeming to lose any weight but he is having some other symptoms that concern me -- very frequent, loose BM's (3-4 a day) that are seriously foul, very pale, bruises very easily and significantly, muscle tone is really not present.

So as we all know how the medical community is seriously lacking when it comes to Celiac disease...I made an appointment with his regular Pediatrician next week and I am thinking that we should start with blood work? From what I have read it is often inconclusive for many folks so I am concerned about that to start. What should I tell my Pediatrician (other than what is obvious here) for what blood work I would like to have them run?

My dx was kind of backwards...I had been suffering from acid reflux for a long time and on med's for it...then later became sick -- Had a biopsy FIRST and was dx that way. So no blood work happened. Not sure really what to do for my son but would rather he be dx sooner than later so I can make sure I can keep my little guy going strong and not suffer needlessly. :)

    Thanks

    Kris

HERE IS THE INFORMATION ON THE Lehigh Valley Celiac Support Group meets five times a year at 2166 S. 12th Street in Allentown. Speakers and participants provide information, tips and support, covering everything from restaurants and products to health concerns. They have food you can try and recipes to share. You can even participate in a food co-op, saving you money and allowing you to buy in smaller quantities. Neet meeting is July 7 - I hope this helps - Maureen

Thanks so much for getting back to me! I will definitely contact someone about it!

  3. Hi everyone

I've been recently diagnosed with Celiac. Endo with biopsy and positive blood test. At first I was thinking that this wasn't going to be "too" hard....I could deal with rice pasta...I could deal with gluten free bread/waffles, etc. But wooohooo! Are there a million things that I had no idea that gluten in them?!?!??? I am freaking out a bit. I didn't think that I could be glutened by my Hershey's chocolate...or Kellog's Rice Krispies! Ok, with the diet stuff being said, I am also pretty darn anemic and feeling physically bad from that. Serious headaches, heart palpitations, shortness of breath (Iron total 22 L, % of Saturation 5 L, Ferritin 3 L) bruising, etc.

What I am finding is that I am feeling really bad and crazy mood swings. I am generally a very together person (ok, PMS gets me from time to time but this is bordering on rediculous now) and I am finding I have no patience, I feel depressed, like I have no control and very emotional (could cry at every Hallmark commercial if I didn't skip them all on the DVR!).

Is it "normal" to feel like that?? I am so not a "crazy" person. I've lost it at work...had a meltdown in front of some people and left for the day (over something really stupid) and it is SO not how I normally behave.

Is this the gluten? Is this the celiac? Is this the anemia? ARGH. I feel really alone in all of this.

  4. Has anyone heard about a group in the valley yet? I am newly gluten free, and really have no support. I live in Lehighton, but am willing to go down into the valley providing gas prices do not increase too much more!

    Hi Starry

I too have been recently diagnosed and while I thought I was going to cope really well, I am finding that I am having a really difficult time with it. I am in the LV...did you get any response?

  5. Yippppeee!

Have I found some other Celiac runners? I was dx while training for my first half marathon. It certainly explains a lot about my energy levels! While I wait for the bloodwork to come back to find out what I am deficient in as the result of this, I am definitely finding it hard to fuel for runs. AND I find I am hungry all the time!! ALL the time. Need to figure this thing out so I can eat the right things to stay satisfied longer AND fuel for my running.

    ~Kris
