  1. Today I ate:

    Breakfast: Scrambled egg, Ore-Ida hash browns, 2 slices Oscar Meyer Center Cut bacon

    Lunch: Trader Joe's rice pasta mac & cheese with tuna, strawberry rhubarb crisp with vanilla ice cream

    Dinner: Grilled steak with A-1 Steak Sauce, boiled baby potatoes with olive oil and salt, grilled asparagus, red wine, more strawberry crisp for dessert

    Kind of a HIGH CALORIE day, but it was Father's Day so I did a lot of cooking for my husband.


  2. Interesting topic!

    I was diagnosed at age 42. Up until then, I had zero symptoms and could eat anything I wanted. Suddenly one morning I had a pain in my stomach just under my sternum, and it wouldn't go away. I tried eating crackers but it made it worse (gee, what a surprise!). I had this pain for a couple of weeks and called my doctor. He suggested a round of Prilosec and an appointment with a gastroenterologist. The Prilosec did help, and by the time I went in for the endoscopy, my symptoms were gone. I received the diagnosis two weeks later (pain was still gone), two days before a trip to Europe. I ate whatever I wanted in Europe - my last hurrah - without any pain at all. My bloodwork was also positive, so I reluctantly accepted the diagnosis and went gluten-free.

    My trigger: I think it was stress. My daughter's best friend was killed in a terrible accident, two days later my father in law died, and my son was graduating from high school and figuring out where he wanted to go for college. Just a lot of stressful things happening all at once.


  3. I had a quick question: have you had the kids tested, either for celiac disease or the gene?

    You might already know this, but for relatives who are one degree separated from a celiac positive person(parents, siblings, kids), about 1 in 22 will be positive for it. When I pestered my family to be tested, even though none of my kids had gut symptoms, one of my children and my brother both came back positive.

    On top of the possibility of having the disease, I have read (but still looking for good confirmation) that if any of your kids have inherited the gene from you, the only sure way to prevent them from eventually developing the disease themselves is for them to eat a gluten free diet, too.

    After finding that out, my hubby and I decided we'd all go gluten free as a family. He has his gluten on the rare times he eats out. We were actually very thankful we did it, because after we cut glutn, we discovered that our one child who had tested negative for celiac disease is either gluten intolerant or had a false negative, because when he's accidentally been given gluten, he's reacted.

    My kids have both been tested for antibodies and both are negative. That, as we all know, doesn't mean they'll never develop Celiac, since they certainly might have received the genes from me. If, at some point, either of them develops symptoms, then they will be tested again. I would not recommend that a person completely avoid gluten in order to prevent them from developing Celiac, unless they're already exhibiting symptoms.


  4. My house has been gluten-free since I went gluten-free in August 2008. The only gluteny items allowed are beer, or snack type items that my husband keeps in his office or my daughter keeps in her room. No gluten (except beer) in the kitchen or main living areas. My husband and kids agreed to this ahead of time. I told them it would be a lot easier for me to not get CC, plus I am the grocery shopper and the cook... so.... :). Anyway, at least *they* can eat whatever they want when they're not at home.

    I do not get upset when others eat gluten-filled foods around me. I feel envious, yes, but I don't feel upset with them at all. I've been pleasantly surprised that so many people in my life have been very accommodating of my dietary needs and have gone to extra work to have foods available for me to eat in social situations. It's really nice.

    Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss some things and wish I didn't have this disease. But it is what it is.


  5. Hi! I'd like to join you, too. I started Weight Watchers the day after Thanksgiving, and by Valentine's Day I lost 16 lbs and reached my goal weight. Now I'm maintaining by tracking calories using an online tracker (MyPlate, on the Livestrong website), rather than continue to pay the monthly fee for WW Online.

    Like some of you, when I was diagnosed Celiac 1.5 years ago, I overcompensated for my loss of gluten by eating a lot of junk food that was bad for me, and I gained about 10 lbs pretty quickly. I feel so much better and in control now!

    Weight Watchers really works! I combined it with running, which I think was a huge help. I started off slow and am now up to 5-6 miles, 3x a week.

    They say maintenance is the hardest part. I'd like to stay accountable, and since we're all in the same gluten-free boat, this seems like a great place to do that!


  6. I'm so glad to find this forum! I did weight watchers 2 years ago (before I knew I had celiac) and lost a bunch of weight on it. Since going on the gluten free diet I have gained weight--mostly because everything is higher calorie than their gluten equivilences. I am planning on joining weight watchers on Monday to get my weight back under control, and I can use all the support I can find!! The diet was tricky for me even back when I could eat whatever I wanted.. but now I have to worry about the gluten too :(.

    Anyone have any more snack, meal or recipie ideas for low point meals/snacks? 2 years ago I could only have 22 points, but I'm guessing it will be less now :o . I'm definitely going to try to pre portion things like you guys have suggested!! =)

    I've been on WW for the past month and have lost 9 lbs. Ideally, I'd like to lose 8 more. My favorite snacks are 94% fat-free microwave popcorn, or hot-air popped popcorn. Also veggies and hummus! And fruit like apples, clementines, bananas. All good snacks. I used to love trail mix and almonds, but it's too many points so I mostly avoid them now.

    Are you joining online or meetings? I'm online only, but I think with meetings you can also sign up for E-Tools online, and have access to recipes and message boards there. They are very helpful. Good luck!


  7. I am a good cook and I have tried many recipes or mixes that other celiacs have kindly suggested or recommended. Still, nothing meets my expectations. I want hot dogs and burgers on nice soft, white rolls. I want sandwich filling on soft white bread or, God forbid, on whole wheat bread.

    I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich--no bread.

    Schar white bread is really, truly good. I haven't found it in any local stores but you can order it from Gluten Free Mall or some other sites. It's expensive (of course) and the slices are small, but they don't have that icky rice flour taste. That reminds me of the time I was on a vacation and there was an In-n-Out Burger near our hotel. I decided to buy some gluten-free hamburger buns at Whole Foods so that I could have a bun for my burger. I should have known when I *hoisted* the bag of 6 rolls from the shelf, to put them back. They were like bricks, and so dry. Yuck, yuck, yuck. The burger was better without that bun! I know Schar makes rolls too, but like the bread slices, they are small. Good to keep on hand in your freezer, though.


  8. I completely understand because my symptoms are subtle or non-existent, too. I honestly don't know if I have been "glutened" in the past 15 months, because I haven't experienced any definitive symptoms after eating something questionable. Since I eat a wide variety of foods, go out to eat at restaurants or other peoples' homes sometimes, have been on a couple of vacations, etc., chances are good that I have been glutened and didn't know it.

    My advice is to do your due diligence to avoid anything with gluten. Question restaurant servers about how food is prepared, don't eat anything questionable at parties, empty your kitchen of gluten if possible, take safe food along with you everywhere you go. Do the best you can. And don't worry about every little stomach gurgle or bit of bloating. I've had my stomach gurgle after I've eaten food that I know was 100% safe. Stomachs just gurgle sometimes. :P

    Good luck. It gets easier but it's still hard sometimes!

    YES, IT SUCKS!!! I feel sorry for myself a lot. But, I deal with it the best I can. I make good choices, I don't cheat, and I don't deprive myself either. But man oh man, I hate grocery shopping. You look around the store and see all these things you cannot have. Ever again. Even if you didn't WANT to eat that food, it's the knowing you CAN'T have it that sucks. And going out for dinner, going to parties, anything social. I feel like a hermit because I don't like to go out anymore and deal with it. I hate feeling *different* or *needy*.

    But what choice do we have? Once we are diagnosed with celiac, our only option is to live a gluten-free life. Might as well make the best of it. Even though sometimes, it sucks. B)

  11. I've eaten twice at the Five Guys near my house, and was mildly concerned about CC both times. I don't have an outward reaction to gluten, so I never know if I am accidentally "glutened." The last time I went, I brought a homemade gluten-free bun with me, and that was nice. The time before, I ate my burger with a fork. Their food is pretty good, but I'll only go there once in a blue moon. I rarely ate fast food before diagnosis, anyway.


  12. I don't go to Starbucks very often, but I've had the valencia orange cake about half a dozen times. In fact, I bought one on Sunday, at the Starbucks near my work. It was the last one on the plate, but I didn't think anything of it. I'm glad I got it, because I discovered the next day that they have been discontinued. :(

    Tuesday was free pastry day, and a couple of friends and I had already decided we'd walk to the Starbucks near our house. I tried calling them to ask if they still had the cake, but their phone was screwed up. So I went there, hoping for the best but expecting they might be out. And they were. The girl at the counter very snottily told me that they hadn't been selling, and they were throwing them out all the time. (I realize that due to the ingredients, they wouldn't have a long shelf life, but why couldn't they freeze them??)

    So lucky me, I got to sit and watch my friends eat their coffee cake, while I drank my last Starbucks coffee.
