Treen Bean's Achievements

  1. Hi! I just recently spent a weekend in Baltimore. I had a wonderful meal at a Pub called Lucy's on Eutaw. It is across from the Hippodrome Theater. Other safe options include: PF Changs, Outback, Uno's (for pizza), Fogo de Chao, Roy's.

The website Urban Spoon just added a Gluten Free Friendly restaurant search option. I recommend trying that as well.

  2. I react to wheat and barley grass and there are others who do also. Personally I stay away from those ingredients and use great care in reading supplement labels because of those ingredients and the reaction I have gotten from them.

Okay... I always avoided them too. I would also imagine the risk of cross contamination would be quite high.

How can a company print "Gluten Free" on their label if the product is not truly gluten free?! We need stricter labeling laws here in the US!

  3. Bread: I would recommend baking your own in a breadmaker or using a mix. The Gluten Free Pantry mix and Pamela's Mix are both good. For a premade bread, Kinnikinnick is the best. I also like Sami's Bakery Millet and Flax bread, but it is NOT made in a dedicated facility. I have only gotten sick once though.

Crackers: I like Mary's Gone Crackers and Nature Valley Rice Thins

Pasta: Tinkyada Brown Rice Pasta and Quinoa Pasta

Cereal: Rice Chex, Gorilla Munch, Peanut Butter Panda Puffs, Mesa Sunrise

Baked Goods: I would recommend baking your own. Gluten Free Pantry, Namaste, and Pamela's mixes are all excellent. For Premade: Kinnikinnick, Foods by George

Pizza Crust: For premade, Kinnikinnick is pretty good. Personally, I like to use the Chebe mix and make my own. It is very easy and DELICIOUS!

  4. I'm trying to do my own research before springing into action and asking tons of questions. I can't find where I might buy these. Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Wegmans.......???

    Thank you!

    Karen

They are still kind of hard to find. You might have to request that your local health food/grocery store stock them for you. If not, you can order them from kinnikinnick.com. The shipping rate is a flat fee. So, I would recommend ordering a bunch of things and stocking up. Good luck and happy hunting!

  5. My family makes our own graham crackers using Jules Gluten Free graham cracker mix--they turn out GREAT!! Smores were always a huge tradition at our house, so it's great to be able to participate again! Really--I think these are almost better than the gluten version :)

I'm going to have to look for this mix! I definitely prefer making stuff at home vs. buying it. Thanks for the tip!

  6. Are Kinnikinnick flaky like gluten graham crackers or are they thick/dense like Josef? DD used to love Josef grahams but has stopped eating them recently so I'm looking for something new. I'm thinking I'd like to try Smorables and asked our HFS if they can order them. Thanks!

I didn't find them as dense as the Josef crackers. I don't know if I would call them "flaky", but they were pretty darn close!

  7. I AM SOOOO EXCITED!!! Yesterday, I stumbled upon a little health food store in the middle of nowhere Michigan that carried Kinnikinnick Graham Crackers. They're called Smorables. I use to have two Graham Crackers dipped in milk every night for my dessert, pre-Gluten Free. I tried the Josef brand Graham Crackers, but they left a funny aftertaste, and just weren't quite right. I cautiously nibbled the corner of one of the Kinnikinnick crackers and wonder upon wonders it tastes like a REAL Graham Cracker!!!!!!!! (happy dance). I had Graham Crackers dipped in milk for dessert tonight! I highly recommend everyone try these. They are casein free, too!

  8. I have an update on my sisters. My older sister and her husband have gone completely gluten free and have maintained the diet for 2 months now! They are both feeling great. My sister has started gaining some much needed weight and her husband has lost 15 pounds! I am so proud of them for finally taking a proactive approach to their health! Now, if my little sister would get on board the gluten free train! Thanks again for all of your comments and advice.

  9. I know that my problems started after I contracted Cellulitis, and it started attacking my immune system. After that, I started having severe problems with gluten, dropped a ton of weight, etc.... But, other than developing a cashew allergy and becoming increasingly sensitive to cross contamination, I haven't developed any more problems. I hope you find the answers you are looking for.

  10. I make a great chili using pumpkin instead of tomatoes! I know it sounds odd, but everyone, and I mean everyone, who has ever tried it loves it! Simply add a can of pumpkin puree and 2 cups of water in addition to your meat/beans/spices/ and allow to simmer about 20 minutes. Trust me, you will LOVE it!

  11. Hi everyone! I, too, am a Christian. I have gone through stages of anger at God for allowing me to suffer from Celiac Disease. However, he has used this awful disease to teach me so much. I have learned that I can not control everything in my life. I have to lean on Him and trust that He will take care of me no matter what. It took Celiac Disease for me to fully comprehend this concept! I still get angry sometimes, but God is always there to catch me and remind me to be thankful for everything I do have.

  12. Hi! I am from Tampa so I hope I can be of some help. Tampa has the typical chains with gluten-free menus: Outback, Carrabas, Bonefish, PF Changs, Maggiano's (great gluten-free pasta!), Chipotle (a bit risky), and Chic-Fil-A (also a bit risky). There is also a local restaurant called CDB's. The owner has a Celiac family member and will be able to talk you through the menu and feed you safely. Call ahead just to make them aware. Also, if you give them 48 hrs. notice, the owner will make you a gluten free pizza! I haven't tried it yet, but it is nice to have that option. Other than that, Publix, Whole, Foods, and Abby's are grocery stores that carry some gluten-free products. I hope this helps.

  13. I have been going there for awhile and have to agree.....of all the places I have had gluten-free pizza (which is 2 as of this date!) ;) , the Boynton is the winner, hands down! It really is good and the crust is always crisp on the bottom and not doughy.

They only have a gluten-free pizza menu, though. They used to have a regular gluten-free menu with 3 different meals offered but stopped that because the kitchen was too small and they were worried about CC.

They do have GREAT pizza! My husband and I bought one, cut it in half, and cooked it in a toaster oven backstage at the theater! (We travel with a touring broadway show for a living.) It was an awesome treat!

  14. My husband and I just ate there! We started with the gluten-free pita bread and baba ghanoush. Then we had paninis. His was regular and mine was gluten free. However, he ended up eating half of my sandwich claiming the gluten free bread was better than the regular! The portions were huge and the prices were very reasonable. We also stopped by the Flying Apron Bakery. It was FANTASTIC!

  15. The exact same thing happened to me! I didn't have my period for years. Then, I went gluten free. Within a year, my period returned. And boy did it return! Oh well! I feel so much stronger and healthier now it is worth one week of discomfort every month.

ok, this is kind of icky but I really want to know if anyone has had this experience.

I have been gluten free nearly 4 months and feeling awesome.

However, my periods are much heavier now. Not more painful or anything, just with more flow.

Let me put it this way...I haven't needed a feminine hygiene product in 20 years. That's how light I am....a little extra wiping when I went to the loo was all I needed.

Now I may need to actually buy tampons next month. I forgot how nasty this business is LOL!

could this be a nutritional deficiency that is now resolving due to my improvement on the gluten-free diet?

my metabolism is all kinds of better in many ways, so it won't surprise me if this is part of it.

    common story? let me know!
