  1. Hey everybody, since getting my IBS diagnosis this summer I've been around forums specifically for that (since I've been eating wheat after collapsing on the GAPS diet.) It's all a long story, but basically I got worse on GAPS and my doctor doesn't really want anything else to do with me because he has no more ideas.

    The people on the IBS forums however do not embrace alternative therapies, treatments or ideas quite like the folks here do I've found; at the mention of "leaky gut" they rush to inform me that the medical professionals don't believe it exists and assure me that IBS is a condition in itself, not just the results of bacterial dysbiosis or food allergies.

    I would expect everyone to be so desperate for relief that they would at least consider everything! Anyway, I'm back to square one, with nothing but IBS and a bunch of clean test results. Here's the dilemma: On the GAPS diet I lapsed into unformed fatty stools, sometimes passing pure liquid fat. However, a stool test I then did came back showing no malabsorption of fats! I don't know, I really don't. But at this point it's clear that no amount of low-carb dieting can cure me; I've read GAPS and I've read Breaking The Vicious Cycle and I believe whole-heartedly that they're effective and well-grounded strategies, however I'm sorry to say that apparently the inability to digest carbs isn't a universal problem for people with digestive problems.

    Sorry to rant, I promise I'll get to the point now that I've vented my frustrations...whew...okay: I want to get my intestines back into good shape. It's the only thing that is evidently wrong, and whether or not it makes me feel better I want to get them right.

    I mean killing the bad bacteria and yeasts, getting rid of the heavy metals and reestablishing the good bacteria, while eliminating any foods I've become sensitive to. So thus far, here is my plan:

    1 Take a parasite stool test

    2 Take a stool test measuring bacterial levels (to see where I'm at and check for candida/pathogens)

    3 Take the food sensitivity test (can't post company name I guess) and begin the proper elimination and rotation diet

    4 Take a heavy metals test and, if positive begin...chelating, I think it's called? Removing the metals anyway

    5 Eliminate any parasites, pathogens or candida

    6 Start a good hypnotherapy program for my anxiety and intestinal issues

    7 Now if you haven't heard of this I warn you, steel your stomach: Fecal Transplant, which is exactly what it sounds like; taking good, healthy poo from a donor and inserting it via enema into yourself. I've been discussing this with people who have tried it for their UC and reported amazing results. I'm convinced it's the best (if not the only, because I haven't seen any benefits from regular probiotics) way to replenish all the hundreds of various types of beneficial bacteria in the human intestines.

    So my questions are, have I missed anything? What other steps should I consider taking/avenues should I pursue? And also, what do you all think about colon cleansing, useful or bogus?

    Thanks for any opinions, criticisms or additions to the plan, I'm really trying to hit the issue from all sides. I feel as if I haven't gotten better because I've tried all these plans by themselves; diets without checking for food sensitivities, probiotics without first removing pathogens etc.

  2. I'm somewhat of the opinion that foods in their whole and natural form are the way to go, though I suppose with things like peanut butter and yogurt it's somewhat debatable. I would look into a book called Nourishing Traditions, which has a lot of good recipes and information, but the biggest thing is that you should soak your grains before eating them to eliminate the inhibiting factors that prevent us from absorbing all the nutrients.

    That being said, when I was eating non-gluten grains I used a rice cooker to make rice, quinoa and buckwheat. It was phenomenal, doesn't take much longer to cook than pasta and you get good grains that you know have been prepared properly (soaked) because you did it yourself!

  3. I had to take a quarter off last year and I will again if I have to (knock on wood.) The depression is the worst; feeling crappy made me want to stay in my room all the time. I stopped going to class, then I stopped going to the dining hall, then I stopped leaving my bed...

    I'm back in school this year. The hardest part is the social aspect; I wish I had taken a year off before going to college, because leaving in the middle of freshman year makes it so weird with your friends on campus. Luckily mine were all very understanding and I hang out with them this year now that I'm back, but still, it's best to get it sorted out before the term starts so you can enjoy school without interruptions.

    But that being said when you're not right you're not right and you have to take as much time as you need to get there.

  4. Hi all, I'm having a rough time digesting fats and meat broths have been too much for me. I'm wondering if the often mentioned bone broth might be okay? I'm thinking that if it's just boiling bones (not whole slabs of meat or entire chickens) and drinking that with the marrow in it it wouldn't have all the fat content of the broths I previously made from entire pieces of meat. Is that right, or are bone broths made from bones that still have meat on them like ribs and such?

    Any help is much appreciated, thanks,

  5. Thanks for the reply, I don't have any vitamin or mineral deficiencies. I do not eat only fresh meat though, I've never thought about it. Most of it is fresh, though I do eat some sausages with only safe additives (spices, salt/pepper, no nitrates or nitrites, all grass fed meat.)

    I do have a tendency to overeat at each meal, I miss the feeling of being full more than anything. I haven't been full in a long time.

    I'm on two probiotics: mutaflor and bio-kult. They're both endorsed by the people who're supposed to know these things (my doc and the author of the book Gut and Mind Psychology) so I hope they're good!

    I have yet to eat yogurt, I do eat sauerkraut and other fermented veggies. It's very confusing, fiber is supposedly bad if you have more bad bacteria than good, but with less fiber I need more meat which I can't digest! I don't know what to do, so for now I'm just eating more veggies than meats and keeping my fruit intake light and separated from my meals...

    Thanks again, I'm having a lot of trouble deciding what's right and what's wrong, but even though I don't feel any better I'm just hoping the SCD is helping anyway.


  6. Hi there, yeah I tried the naturopath plan (candida diet + endless supplements.) I felt normal crappy and hungry! The new doctor I'm seeing is a pretty interesting guy, he bases all of his work off of the books Nourishing Traditions and the GAPS. When I talked to him about digestive enzymes he said he doesn't use them unless it's totally apparent that they're necessary, because you'll begin to rely on them, so if you can accomplish your goals through diet alone it's best not to get used to a crutch like that.

    Right now all I take is fermented cod liver oil, essential oils (omegas and all that), Mutaflor and Bio Kult (which are both probiotics.) I thought at first I might be reacting to one of them, but once I changed my diet from eating too much broth and meat fats I calmed back down to normal crappy after about 4 days.

    I've finally reached a point where I think I can figure out what's making me feel crappy; the whole time until now it was just a big sea of reactions. Now it's pretty clear that I'm better when I eat 2-3 times as many veggies as meats every day, which is a little tough with my appetite (veggies aren't very filling and I'm a 19 year old guy who's into weightlifting) but I find if I just start my morning off with a couple of minimally processed, only-spices-added sausages or some other meat and then just boil a buttload of green beans or snow peas I feel pretty good. Then I'm ravenously hungry again in 2 hours, so just rinse and repeat.

    I've also been eating apples which were fine cooked, but raw have been a little iffy so I'm not sure if I'll continue that. I think I just need to not challenge my digestive system with too much of anything that's difficult to digest, it feels like a matter of just being in a fragile state.


  7. I'm of the opinion that gluten is bad for everyone, so I'm not considering going back to it (maybe not ever) I just meant I don't have celiac- the blunting of the villi etc. Gluten was definitely an issue for me, just not so much an autoimmune one.

    I've been feeling better yesterday and today, though I've been eating a lot of cooked apples. I hope I'm not just pacifying the candida for now...oh well, feeling better is a huge thing for me right now. I've also added ghee to my cooking with no ill effects to mention so that's good! Fat in small amounts isn't troublesome, it's just drinking all that broth, wayy too much I think.

    And Ali, I was taking coconut oil when I was candida dieting, now I just use it for cooking. I think a big step for me is stress relief, I've been so wound up about everything and now about my stomach I'm just trying to take a step back.

I just don't know...I don't fit the Celiac description really; after 7-8 months gluten free I spent a month eating everything on my (former) doctors advice; pizzas, burgers, cakes etc., and I felt better for that month than I feel now. I've never had mal absorption or any deficiencies, I don't lose much weight...I mean, anything is possible, but based on my symptoms and all my tests I'm fairly certain my IgA was high because of leaky gut rather than Celiac.

    I won't rule it out and I'm certainly not adding wheat back in at the moment, but I've not felt as seriously sick as I read people describe on here. Just bad digestive stuff.

    Thanks for the encouragement though, right now all I'm eating is meat, veggies and cooked apples. Even almonds seem to make me worse! Today I feel like I might be improving back to the normal state of crappy I was in before my huge setback 2 weeks ago, so once I'm back to square one hopefully actual improvements will be next. Sticking to the diet isn't hard at all as long as I start feeling better, you know? Without improvement it feels sort of hopeless.

  9. Alright, before I pose this question, you have to know that I'm the biggest meat eater you can imagine. Even before I got any stomach problems, I could easily eat 6 meals in a day; 5 of them would have meat, and all 5 of those would have more meat than veggies. When I went gluten free and now that I'm on the SCD I eat endless amounts of meat a day, I can go through a whole chicken plus no problem.

    Could meat be keeping me from getting well? I had SIBO, took 2 antibiotics for that and barely improved, candida diet for 6 weeks and barely improved, I barely improved removing gluten the first time I did it and now on the SCD I'm worse than I've ever been. Consistently throughout these ventures I've been eating lots and lots of meat (all my meals are meat/meat + veggies.)

    I've seen the term putrefactive dysbiosis thrown around, and I wonder if it's not the carbs that are a problem so much as all the animal fats and proteins? Because I haven't done much better off carbs, but when my doctor recently put me on the intro to GAPS diet (with soup and soup broth all fat included multiple times a day) I degraded rapidly and all the fat appeared in my stool, totally undigested.

    Is this plausible, or are meats generally handled well by everyone with digestive problems?

  10. Ugh, so after some rotten experiences peanut butter is out, as are eggs and almond flour based baked goods. Can I get by with just meat, veggies, nuts and (eventually) fruit? I'll be eating fermented veggies as well.

    I just don't really get it, all I have is dysbiosis and minor candida, all the docs say this diet should do wonders for me but now on my third time eating like this I feel just as bad as always. Could food allergies be setting me back?

    The fat goes through me pretty much undigested. I get D that's pure grease, and any stools I have are unformed, break apart instantly and float near the top of the water. I talked to my doctor today and he basically put me on the later stages of the GAPS/SC diet, skipping the broth stages and moving on to meats, eggs, veggies, nuts and small amounts of fruit (which I'm to introduce in like a week.) I'm also supposed to stay away from Ghee for the time being because of the fat.

    I ate salmon last night and ate eggs this morning and thus far I feel like I did before the broth diet commencement. So I'm back at square one, which is surprisingly encouraging considering my last week :P


  12. Thank for the tip, I'm looking for any excuse to use the gas stove in my apartment (we have electric at home and it's crappy.)

    On another note, I'll just say the following may be too much information just to warn you in advance.

    I'm on the introduction to the GAPS diet, which involves eating soup for most of my meals and drinking 2-3 cups of broth at a minimum every day, broth with all the fat and nutrients. I've been getting worse and worse digestive symptoms since I started last Monday, always unformed and soft, greasy and floaty. It's clear that I'm not handling all the fats well, what should I do? I've started taking the layer of fat that solidifies when you refrigerate the broth off, but I'm still suffering just from the broth itself. I'm worse than before on this diet, has anyone else had trouble handling fats? According to the docs and the books I'm supposed to handle fats and proteins well and carbs poorly. Well, the carbs part is right.

    Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, and also if any of you are familiar with the intro diet I'm in the third stage, introducing scrambled eggs. Thank you!

  13. Don't take antibiotics! My stool test came back with 0 good bacteria and a bad one, so I thought "well, if I have no good ones anyway might as well take the antibiotic!" Now I've been informed that was a bad idea. Take a quality probiotic and eat cultured foods (sauerkraut, pickles with live cultures, yoghurt if you can or other fermented foods, and find out what the bad bacteria (if you have any) are weak to.


  14. Hi Jesse,

    Just take it one step at a time. It seems daunting at first, but soon it becomes a habit and second nature just like brushing your teeth and contact lenses etc ...

    I've done the SCD for 7.5 months now with very good results without the yogurt or any other fermented foods. Instead I take probiotics daily. Since I don't do well with the SCD baked stuff, nor anything cooked with many ingredients, and due to other intolerances, my diet is really basic: vegetables, non-sugary fruit, chicken, canned tuna and raw whole nuts. But in many ways it just makes the SCD easier to deal with, as it simplifies the cooking a lot. Most of the time I have sauteed vegetables or a salad, and add in either chicken or tuna. Such basic meals could be made on a 'camp-cooker' with a single electric burner in your room. And if you have no problems with meat/fish in general, this of course can be varied endlessly. If you stock up on nuts, you also have something to keep you full throughout the lectures.

    We all go through a period of adjusting to the diet, also as to which foods agree with us or not. So don't worry if you make mistakes - just accept that there'll probably be a bit of trial and error for you in the beginning.

    As to the soup, I've only ever made the chicken broth, for which I just buy the chicken whole and cut it up myself, or buy pre-cut pieces. As to other meats, I'm sure someone else here knows ...

    Thanks for responding Jan! I just moved in to my apartment yesterday: Gas stove, full sized refrigerator, full sized kitchen. I think I'm in heaven after the nightmare of the dorms/dining hall last year. I've been cooking soup non-stop, this is the end of day two on the "introduction section" of the GAPS diet, I'm hoping to start feeling better soon.

    I've also discovered the beauty of the crockpot. I put a whole chicken into it with water last night, and when I woke up I had broth and meat for the day. It's like magic, I feel like that's what's gonna make my life happen when school really picks up.

    I have a question about fermented veggies (and yogurt/kefir I suppose; I'm not there yet) is there a limit to how much sourkrout or other fermented veggies you can eat in a day? I have BTVC, I've just finished reading the first 10 chapters and gotten to the recipe sections.

    I'm a student at Western Carolina University in NC and live in a dorm (without a kitchen!). One thing I have to say, you can do it! I don't know how restricted your diet already, or how much of a change this will be for you, but no worries. I want to encourage you to buy a yogurt maker (I use a EuroCuisine electric) with single serving jars as far as that goes - it's not so hard to make, I promise. I've found a way to do it here in my room. I don't even boil the milk and like the yogurt from that better than with it boiled. Hang in there, friend, and do your best to find (legal) shortcuts. Yeah, it's a busy life but so worth it!

    Hi, thanks for responding! I guess I'll have to look into it...it seems very daunting, all the yogurt making and fermenting (though right now I'm eating buckwheat/quinoa and the soaking of everything in advance is making me want to pull my hair out.) I feel like I'm going to be making bone broth soups every day, just for the ease factor (I'm not much of a cook.) A question about that, I'm supposed to get meat for the broth with the bones sliced to get at the marrow, do you just ask the butcher to do that for you/is it a strange request, and if so how do I make that transaction go smoothly? I already feel like kind of a weirdo you know?

  16. Hey everybody, this thread is intimidating! I'm supposed to be starting the GAPS diet (which is basically the SCD) and I have a few questions about yogurt and fermented veggies. I'm a college student going back to school on monday and I don't feel confident in my ability to handle this stuff! Are there any commercial brands of yogurt or sourkrout that are okay? I'm not sure I'll be up to making everything myself in addition to all the cooking I'll have to do...

  17. Oh my goodness, you have no idea how nice it is to hear a success story! It seems like those are few and far between on the internet, thanks for lifting my spirits! So you kept wheat, barley, rye and oats out of the diet the whole time? Right now I've just added brown rice and quinoa in and that seems to be going okay every 4 days, my ebergy has picked up a lot with those back.

    Do you limit how much of each food you eat per day? So if you eat rice every 4 days, do you only eat a certain amount?


  18. Is anyone on a rotation diet? I'm on a candida diet of veggies, meat and eggs and I'm about to start rotating foods every 4 days and food groups every 2 days. I have candida and leaky gut and I'm hoping to avoid any new allergies and give my gut a rest after eating something I'm not supposed to (I haven't yet identified all my problems.)

    Any success stories?


  19. I agree with Riceguy about the weight issues, and IMO it seems like the whole atken's, low carb diets are for people to lose fat (I may be wrong.) If that is the case, than carbs don't seem like the right way to gain weight, especially not if you're a young guy. I'm a young guy and before all of my intestinal issues started I could eat a whole pizza as one meal and I never gained a pound, just had a fast metabolism.

    I finally upped my weight (I'm 5'11", I went from 145 to 155+) by hitting the gym regularly and getting on a protein supplement. I would tailor my diet so I have good energy foods for before working out and good protein sources for post workout recovery.

  20. Rice Guy: I spent about 8 months gluten free while taking tests, everything came back negative and I didn't improve. My standard GI said to eat whatever I wanted and see how the stress relief felt, so I did that for a few months and felt the same -bad. The GI guy said it was IBS, so I ditched him and went back to my naturopath! This is my fifth week taking digestive enzymes, Oxyperm, fish oil, my antimicrobial and a fiber supplement, and for the first 4 weeks I was taking a probiotic with breakfast and now for the 5th week I'm taking one with every meal, as well as the intestinal permeability medicine (2 at dinner.).

    About that medicine: I take 2 at night, serving size is 2

    500 mg L-Glutamine

    250 mg NAG

    133 mg Gamma-Linolenic Acid

    66 mg Gamma Oryzanol

    56 mg Phosphatidylcholine

    I'm also on the verge of beginning a 4 day rotational diet to try and diversify what I eat and clear up any confusion about food allergies etc.

    I've heard good things about Aloe juice, and I'm not sure how much L-glutamine is enough as that's supposed to be very beneficial. Anything else you can think of I would love to hear about, thanks for responding.
