  1. Hi all,

    Just wondering if anyone else suffers from Kidney pain and frequent bladder infections with Celiacs. I seem to constantly have sharp pains around my sides and kidney area as well as 2-3 bladder infections a month. My GP doesn't seem overly concerned about it even though I have the pain when I don't have a bladder infection. Do any of you know if there any kidney complications associated with Celiacs?

  2. Hi there, my daughter has also been sick for months and we FINALLY found the world best Peds GI. He STRONGLY advises against gluten challenges for diagnosis. Mainly because this can in fact, in some cases, cause an anaphlactic reaction or severe ilness. He feels this is not ethical to make a child suffer when other diagnostic procedures mainly an endoscopy can reveal the illness, (if done accurately). A doctor who is well educated on Celiac disease will suggest other methods of diagnosis. Also with regard to the gene typing, it can be an indication, but it should absolutely NOT be used as a diagnostic tool. All gene typing means is that the person is PREDISPOSED to Celiac disease, it does not mean that they have it. Our GI suggests this as a "last ditch effort" in diagnosis. Using gene typing as a diagnosis can change someones life and insurability later in life. Choose your doctor carefully, even if it means trying several out first, that is what I did and it has paid off for us!!


  3. Congratulations!! You must be sooo excited! I am due Oct 15th, but because of problems with my last labor my doc is inducing me on the 3rd. As far as the big C goes, I had it really bad a few weeks ago and what really worked for me was to eat alot of grapes. Don't ask me why, but it worked. If you get really bad you can always ask your doc for some colace, although I am not sure if its gluten-free.

  4. She's beautiful Kayjay!! Congrats! How are you recovering from your C-section?Our little guy is due on Oct 15th, but apparently he's a little anxious to get out early. I have been on bedrest for 6 weeks for preterm labor. I have one week left of bedrest then we should be ok if he's born then. I can't wait to see him!

  5. Hi there! Sorry you are so sick! I was like this with my last child and it was pure hell. Especially if you have other kiddies to care for. Just a warning about Phenergan, it will knock you on your butt and if you have other small kids I would probably opt for Zofran even though it is more expensive. I took Phenergan, but only when my husband was home because I kept falling asleep with a 2 year old in the house. You will probably have to phone the maker of both meds to find out if they are gluten-free. If you want to go the nautal route, try ginger pills if your OB says its ok. They helped me a bit. I hope you feel better soon!

Medic alert tags are generally for emergency personnel such as Paramedics and ER staff, to alert them of potentially fatal allergic reactions or medical conditions that may affect their course of treatment when a patient is rendered unconsious or unable to speak for themselves. As a former Medic, I don't believe Celiacs falls into these categories. Although it is a serious medical condition, it would rarely seriously affect the course of emergency treatment.


  7. Hey all, anyone else ever been accidently glutened by a friend??? We had friends over for dinner, and my husband was making homemeade burgers. A friend of ours was mixing the meat up and put a beer in there to add flavor. I ate the burger and have been sick for two days and itching like crazy! I told my husband the next day that I couldn't figure out what I had eaten, but I felt terrible and he said "oh yeah, our friend put a beer in the hamburger." I was so mad even though neither of them meant to make me sick. My hubby said "well it was just beer, I thought it was fine" Sheesh.....it's like beer is its own food group or something!!! :huh:


  8. Hey there, and welcome! I hear ya about being tired. I would love to just sleep the next few months away if I could. I have two other kids aged 3 1/3 and 1 1/2 so my naps are few and far between. I still feel pretty tired despite being gluten-free and taking vitamin B-12 shots. I wish I could tell what symptoms are pregnancy and which are Celiacs! I wish I could offer you more advice, but I thought i'd just co-sympathize with you. :)


  9. First let me say how sorry I am for your loss. Our second pregnancy was twins and we lost one of them in the 11th week. I was an undiagnosed Celiac at the time. I know that hormone imbalances can cause miscarriage. Particularily progesterone deficiency. Have you had your vitamin and progesterone levels checked? I will keep you in my prayers to conceive a happy and healthy child!

  10. I know EXACTLY how you feel. Right now I am pregnant, and I would KILL for a hawaiian pizza. When I was first diagnosed, I felt horribly depressed. My husband is an AWESOME cook, and we just love to cook together, its our "thing". I felt like all of that would change, and while it has in some ways, we just work around it. He doesn't mind eating gluten-free. He makes a linguine with clam sauce that I LOVE and I thought I would die without it, but we just modified the recipe a bit and it tastes just the same now! It has taken me a long time to get gluten-free...I have cheated alot, and as a result been sick alot, but I am sticking to it now and it has gotten easier. I hope you feel better soon!

  11. Here's my favorite gluten-free chinese style recipe. My dad once took a Cantonese cooking course and I learned this from him. Everyone loves this recipe, Celiacs and Non-Celiacs alike!

    Chicken and Snow Pea's

    -Cooked white Jasmine rice ( or whatever rice you like)

    -4 chicken breasts cut into thin strips

    -Fresh Snow pea's ends trimmed and washed

    -2 Tbs corn starch mixed with water

    -1 Tbs white sugar

    -1 Can gluten-free chicken broth

    -1Tbs freshly minced garlic

    -1 1/2 Tbs freshly grated ginger root

    -1/2 Cup gluten-free soy sauce (I use San-J)

    Directions:

    1. Mix together soy sauce, garlic and ginger to make a marinade. Marinate chicken pieces in it for about 15-20 minutes. Reserve remainder of marinade for sauce.

    2. Saute marinated chicken in 1 tbs of olive oil until cooked and tender.

    3. Add Snow Pea's to chicken along with the whole can of chicken broth.

    4. Add sugar and remaninder of the soy marinade to the mixture. Cook another 5-10 minutes.

    5. Add in the corn starch and water mixture bit by bit or until desired thickness of sauce is attained.

    6. Cook about another 10-15 minutes, be sure snow peas are not over cooked, add them last if you desire them crisp.

    7. Serve over white rice and enjoy!!!


  12. HI all, I posted a few weeks back about our 16 month old daughters 3 month long bout with diarrhea. I have Celiacs, and we thought for sure that she did also. She has light colored stools that appear oily when solid or diarrhea all the time. Our Pediatric GI doc did the Celiac panel and she was totally negative. He now thinks that she may have Cystic Fibrosis. This obviously is not what we expected and is pretty scary news. Has anyone else been through this? They are sending her to a childrens Hospital for CF testing now. Any adivce?? I hate to say it , but I would rather she have Celiacs!


  13. Hi all, here's a recipe I found that I modified to be gluten-free. I tried it on my family and they loved it!.

    Chicken Avocado Pizza

    Sauce:

    2 ripe avocado's

    1 Tablespoon fresh lime juice

    1 Clove fresh minced garlic

    chopped fresh Cilantro to taste

    Crust:

    1 amy's brown rice pizza crust baked 5-10 minutes to firm it up

    Toppings:

    Finely chopped chicken seasoned with fresh lemon or line juice and garlic and cooked in skillet until golden

    Fresh sliced tomato's

    Mozzarella cheese, grated

    Directions:

    1. Puree avocado's, lime juice, garlic and cilantro in blender

    2. Spread avocado mixture over crust

    3. Top with tomato's, chicken and cheese

    4. Bake 15-20 minutes until cheese melted and crust crispy

    Enjoy!


  14. HI Kayjay...my OB seems to know very little about Celiacs, he asked me if I was seeing a GI and because I said yes he did not seem concerned. He has not suggested any extra care for me due to the Celiacs.

    How are you feeling now? Do you know what you are having? We are havng a boy this time!

  15. My cycle has always been very irregular. I always had horrible cramps and heavy bleeding too. I had spotting between my cycles very often and my doc finally put me on the BC pill to help regulate me. It worked wonders for me! Of course all of this was before I knew I had Celiacs and I have only known I'm Celiac since October and now I'm pregnant again so I can't really tell if going gluten-free has helped my cycle!!

  16. How are all you pregnant ladies doing on your diets? I am hitting myself right now because I gave in and ate at McDonalds today. I know I am going to be a permament fixture on the couch or the toilet by tonight. I am finding it so hard to gluten-free right now because my nausea has subsided and now I just seem crave everything! Arrgghh!
