  1. This started out as a gigantic email multisend to everyone I know; if I accidentally forget to clean up some of the more obscure personal references, I apologize in advance. Four months ago, I made a lot of dramatic changes in my diet: gave up soy, dairy, and fruit and fruit juices, replacing the latter with filtered tap water. From this date I started...
  2. In a shocker, the piece of tape repair didn't take, so I'll indeed be buying another. I dunno, if I wanted to stay in this apartment forever, I might buy an actual bed, but as I don't, something portable is probably preferable. If the air mattress hadn't been so incredibly good for my back, I'd just split the difference and get a futon, but it was, so I'm...
  3. The air mattress lasted a little over two months. I don't think the kitty did it any harm; I think it was just suicide. Anyway, they included a patch kit (basically two large pieces of tape), so it's possible it can be saved, but my instinct is that I'll be getting a new air mattress every two months until I finally give in and get a real bed. (The air mattress...
  4. Some people undergo withdrawal symptoms after quitting gluten, though as you were eating it lightly before, this seems unlikely. If the rice cakes represent an increase in your fiber consumption, you may just need to drink more water. I found about this one the hard way. Sorry not to have any more useful suggestions; here's the Mayo Clinic's Symptom Checker...
  5. Assuming you're getting sufficient fiber from your vegetarian diet, you might want to stop the psyllium. Bloating and feelings of fullness are normal side effects.
  6. Mostly Swiss, German, Danish and English, but I think it was the Irish that got me. Thanks loads, great-grandma Tighe!
  7. Be careful with it. I'm having my usual second and third thoughts. Since I've been losing weight ever since going gluten-free, one would think that if anything I'd be hyperthyroid. It's possible that the iodine in the multivitamins was just enough to make me hyperthyroid, that quitting them made me temporarily hypo and that restarting them made my TSH normal...
  8. In case you missed any of my thrilling story, here it is in a nutshell: All summer, I've been feeling very strange. I posted various interesting and elaborate and incorrect rationalizations of what might be going wrong. Eventually, I hit on the very, very obvious: that if you give up salting your food (like I did decades ago) and then start cooking nearly...
  9. And further happy birthday wishage! Hey, it isn't midnight yet.
  10. Happy happy happy birthday! And many more...
  11. Sorry to hear it. This is a listing mainly of vegetarian restaurants, but there are also health food stores: Open Original Shared Link Hope it helps. There is gluten free bread, but whether you can find it where you live I don't know. You might want to order gluten-free bread mixes online and make your own. (The store-bought gluten-free bread usually...
  12. Why not eat rice, potatoes or sweet potatoes? All of those are gluten free. Tim-n-VA: I'm not aware of any correlation; I don't think you have to be super-sensitive to gluten to have problems with oats. (You could ask Ahorsesoul who posted above about his problems with oatmeal.) I had odd reactions to Bob's Red Mill's oats, but I'm having other...
  13. To expand on happygirl's reply, the only gluten-free oatmeal I've found is Bob's Red Mill, and you have to get the bag that's specifically labeled gluten-free. I found it in only one store in a city with a metro population of 600K, but you can certainly order it online or get your local grocer or natural foods store to order it. It's very expensive, too....
  14. Obviously (practically) nobody's looking at this thread but me, but in case somebody surfs in and sees my earlier post I should note that I got glutened at Pho Viet on the return visit. I didn't mention to them this time the importance of making it gluten free (thinking Vietnamese cooking is inherently so); it would probably be worthwhile to go again, but...
  15. To start with, call a suicide help line. Google produces 1-800-273-TALK; call, talk, jump up and down and throw things. Anything but the ultimate bad decision. Then just cook gluten free. Go simple: meats, vegetables, rice or potatoes, salt and pepper. Take a multi-vitamin. Get sublingual B-12 and take it every day. Just breathe. This isn't as hard...
  16. Ravenwoodglass warns that if you have dermatitis herpetiformis, don't do this. Apparently iodine on the skin is the fastest way to trigger an attack. Edit: Oh, and don't do the test more than once. I did it twice, on my right arm both times. Now I have an iodine colored vein on the back of my right wrist. I don't know what that's all about; assume that it...
  17. Just tell them and don't worry about it. The problem isn't the telling them, it's the ways and means. Because people are really nice and they want to help. If you're at their house, they want to feed you and want to do the best they can to give you gluten-free food, but unless they are willing to clean the kitchen to white glove level and replace a lot of...
  18. I was using sea salt when I ran into trouble, but probably not enough. I'm glad you spurred me to reread the article again, because I had been looking for iodine supplements (duh-- hey! I've been starving:)) when I needed to be looking for kelp. And I'll change my sig line (again).
  19. What I did was tear up a navel orange, cut up a banana and throw on some flake coconut. As I remember it from my childhood, it was basically any citrus fruit, any other fruit, and coconut. This grapes and pineapple stuff is news to me, but I'm sure it would be good: Open Original Shared Link I think Aunt Clara made hers with oranges, tangerines, grapefruit...
  20. Some months ago I found that any time I ate fruit I would have to run immediately to the bathroom. I thought I'd done some damage to my liver by drinking fruit juice more or less with every meal. However, since I finally figured out and addressed my iodine deficiency, I have undergone a miracle cure. This morning, I made ambrosia (proving, finally, that I...
  21. I wouldn't worry about it, but if you do anyway, you could always quit buying recycled products. Earlier thread on paper products: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=59746 Welcome to the board!
  22. To start with, if you think you're casein-intolerant, eliminate the soy/whey protein shakes. Whey is from milk and is considered contaminated with casein by most people here: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=23952 You may find that getting rid of this one item is all you need to do. But I agree with the other posters suggesting that...
  23. Celiacs are not necessarily skinny. All your symptoms could be consistent with celiac disease, but of course they could be consistent with other things, too. I think you're going the right way. Go gluten free with your roommate and see if your symptoms get better. If they do, you can always go back on gluten if you feel the need to get an official diagnosis...
  24. There's no particular need for a formal diagnosis, but as the ARNP was the one who first suspected celiac disease, you might as well stay in touch. I'd suggest going gluten free for a month or a few months and then going in for bloodwork to make sure you aren't missing any nutrients. I never got any formal diagnosis, but understand that the endoscopy...
  25. On the return trip, things were much better. I got a much more experienced server, he produced an up-to-date gluten-free menu, and was much more clued in. (He reminded me not to get Red Robin Seasoning on the fries, either.) Burgers without buns were indeed on the gluten-free menu, and mine was wonderful. So huzzah! It is possible to have a gluten free meal...
