ARCHIVED Update: Reason For Hope?
momxyz posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
first thanks to all of you who have given me sound advice and encouragement. This is an update on my daughter, her story told here: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...uten+depression She is now 8 weeks going gluten free. she wasn't perfect with it early on but she has learned a lot and is motivated and responsible. And it's not me... -
Thanks all for your timely replies. I didn't eat anymore of it after the issue of cross contamination was pointed out! My mother in law is not a big sandwich eater, so it is likely to be ok, but I just don't know. Hubby will get to eat it all! When my husband does buy mayo, he does get it in the squeeze bottles, so we'll be safe at home.

ARCHIVED Thank You To You All, And Apologies
momxyz replied to The Fluffy Assassin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Fluffy, no apologies needed.... we're all doing the best we can to help ourselves, and if we take a wrong turn here or there, well, that's part of the journey. But I do have a question: Are you hypo or hyper thyroid? forgive me in advance if I get too technical, but well, I work in a lab... a low TSH is associated with HYPER thyroidism. TSH... -
well, it started with my daughter's problems, posted elsewhere on this board. W/o repeating her medical history here, I started "connecting the dots" if you will and realized that her issues (which included anxiety and depression) could very well be related to sensitivity to gluten. She went gluten free 8 weeks ago and feels the diet has helped her. As...

hi there, I am another self diagnosed person with what I presume is DH, Like yourself, as long as I am off gluten, the OTC 1% hydrocortizone provides relief. I have been gluten free (more or less) 5 weeks now, and the amount of new blisters has decreased. I still have some very bright red areas, but, the itchy factor is amost gone. Other people with...

thanks momma goose! that is helpful.

I actually haven't been "officially" diagnosed. My story starts with my daughter. At 11 she had some findings that suggested possible celiacs disease; I've posted her story elsewhere on this board. Cutting to the chase, back then testing did not confirm celiacs and so we weren't advised to avoid wheat. Recent problems - for both of us - inspired us to...

I forget to tell you about one other wonderful thing!! Last weekend he bought icecream sandwiches, thinking I could eat those... I did not give in to temptation, but simply explained the compents that were bad for me.. Guess what else he bought yesterday..... Gluten Free Ice Cream!!! at last, a Saturday nite treat we both can enjoy!! Yes...

God Bless my mother in law... since her husband died a key joy in her life is cooking for us. My daughter and i are fairly new to the gluten free lifestyle. She is getting it that we need to avoid wheat, which is really cool. Today she gave us this luscious potato salad. (See, she gets it that we can eat potatoes!) Question: are commercially...

My daughter has several issues that we suspected were related to gluten insensitivity... she has been gluten free now 8 weeks. After focusing on her needs and learning alot I finally connected the dots and realized that my chronic rash had many characteristics of DH... so I went gluten free 5 weeks ago. While its not been an instant miracle cure for either...

oh I hear you on that one! As good as my MIL has been since hubby talked to her, she still will make something that my daughter and I can't eat. (Like gravy thickened with flour... breadcrumb stuffed green peppers - which were formerly a huge favorite of mine....) I feel fortunate because she is at least trying. One thing I did that is helping is that...

hi, your medical history sounds quite complicated so I am not going to offer an opinion on whether you are gluten intolerant or have celiacs; I'll leave that to others more experienced than I. But if you have to take up the gluten free lifestyle for your health you should not feel like its the end of the world! There are actually lots of options, and...

could you have your parents talk to her (especially the one that is the child of your grandma?) My husband talked to my mother in law and that has helped tremendously.

ARCHIVED Non-celiac Gluten Sensitivity
momxyz replied to Mom2Boys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would definitely call either Quest or Enterolab and get an interpretation.... in the meantime check out this article: Open Original Shared Link if I am reading this article correctly you are the DQ 2.2 subtype. The association of this subtype with celiac disease is low - about 1% of celiacs have this subtype according to this article. I will... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Who Has Been Misdiagnosed With Herpes
momxyz replied to chiroptera's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
"So this spring a different doctor took some of the fluid out of the watery blister, sorry it's gross I know, and said that it came back as Herpes Simplex. I was really taken aback by that one I tell ya!!!! Just on my back? That's the only place if you know what I mean." hi, I work in a microbiology lab... am very familar with good ole Herpes simplex... -
ARCHIVED Minute White Rice
momxyz replied to twe0708's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yes, you are very right. Before we got a rice steamer we used a brand of rice called Success, and you could get it in either white or brown. It was very convenint and came out nicely every time. If you don't have a rice steamer this is definitely the way to go, as cooking the regular brown rice in a pan is a slow process and hard to get it just right... -
I had been experiencing a very very itchy rash; I would get these red spots, some would have liquid, but others were just bumps. But like you if I scratched more would appear. I have not sought formal diagnosis, but I have gone gluten free and experienced gradual but steady improvement. I suspect DH because after eating pasta with family last weekend the...

ARCHIVED Minute White Rice
momxyz replied to twe0708's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yes it is gluten free and certainly is a "quick fix' for meal making in a hurry. However, have you considered trying brown rice? Brown rice is less processed and has more nutritionl benefits. higher fiber, lower glycemic index, more vitamin content... I highly adocate the puchase of a rice steamer. It's an investment that will pay its worth back... -
I have read about the connection between celiacs and amennorhea, but, am looking specifically for info on primary amennorhea. My daughter (now 17 almost 18) was tested for Celiacs when she was 11. The indication for testing was that she had fallen off her growth curve - from 25th percentile (height) to the 5th. She also had periodic episodes of tummy...

ARCHIVED Does Anybody Experience Psychological Symptoms When On Gluten?
momxyz replied to RacerRex9727's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiacs and/or gluten intolerance can interfere with the absorption of B vitamins and tryptophane.... since these are the necessary precursors to the synthesis of neurotransmitters in you body (especially serotonin) you could very well have low levels of serotonin as a result. This imbalance very definitely contributes to anxiety and depression.... -
ARCHIVED New To Cooking, And To gluten-free
momxyz replied to Becky C's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi Becky, I'm new to this too; my daughter has been gluten free for about 5 1/2 weeks and I joined her 3 weeks ago. A previous poster said to think about what you were already eating that was gluten free (and fit your other criteria). That's basically how we started. Since brown rice was already a staple in our household that was a help. And, being... -
Thanks for the suggestions, ChemistMama. For the last 3 now going on 4 weeks, I haven't made too much use of prepared products, other than a pizza mix and rice pasta. Since at this time of the year fresh produce is so wonderfully available, I've been eating lots of fruits and vegetables, along with meat, brown rice or potatoes.... I am glad to know...

ARCHIVED Symptom Differences Gi Vs. celiac disease
momxyz replied to lcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hi no more muffins (Love the name) "Either they are going to have to broaden the definiton of celiac or they are going to have to come up with another category for G.I. For every true celiac out there there are a LOT of gluten intolerant people. It does make explaining things to other people difficult." I don't disagree with your sentiments about... -
