  1. Actually I meant that the current price of propane is great! It was last winter that the prices soared up to $5 per gallon and lots of people couldn't afford to get propane.

It's not uncommon for propane to go well over $2 per gallon in the winter, so the current price of $1.70 per gallon is a great winter price.

  2. We had some rougher winter weather earlier in the month and there were some nasty traffic accidents (like a 193 vehicle pile up on I-94). The moral of the story is that if the weather gets into white out conditions, don't bother travelling!

Current temp outside is 11 degrees. Propane prices are at an almost unbelievable $1.70 per gallon. Last winter, they skyrocketed at the peak of the nasty weather. It got as bad as -40 with wind chill. Many people simply had to use alternative heating methods--after all who can afford $5 per gallon for propane?

  3. Hi Nora, welcome to the forum!

I understand completely the issue with small kids. My kids are 8, 5, and 2. The 2 year old will put her hands all over my face and even try to play with my teeth!

I found that the best way to save my sanity is to either limit their food choices or plan to feed them gluten at a time when I can plan one of their baths around it. When they've had a full bath and changed their clothes, I feel like they've been sufficiently de-glutenized.

  4. Have you considered avoiding grocery shopping altogether? In this day and age, we have technological advances that allow us to bypass grocery stores if we want to.

I get fresh produce and eggs from farms. (I have an organic farm that allows you to pre-order whatever fruit and veggies you want and pick it up on a weekly basis)

As far as non-perishables, I get them from Amazon and Vitacost. People who eat meat and drink milk can also source them from farms.

I'm not super sensitive, but I like the convenience of having things dropped at my door. Plus, it's easier to avoid buying stuff that I don't need!

  5. I have small children as well and find it very difficult to avoid glutening if gluten is consumed very freely in the house. Little kids typically take multiple reminders to wash their hands and face. They drop a lot of crumbs around, touch gluten free food with contaminated hands, give adults slobbery gluten filled kisses, put their hands all over adults faces and try to play dentist.

I finally decided that regular gluten consumption in the house is too risky and stressful for me. Most meals are gluten free here. If I want to make sandwiches for the kids (helps stretch food budget) on occasion I just make sure that it's at a time where I can do all the food prep and that I can give them a bath and a change of clothes afterward. Limiting food choices is generally the way I go though these days, even out of the house because it's just easier.

  6. Did you replace all the scratched up pans and wooden spoons? What about old cutting boards and colanders? Do your pets eat gluten free? Have you checked all personal care products that go in or around the mouth? (lip balm, toothpaste, etc.) Have you checked any medications or supplements?

Do you brush and floss before kissing? I think that I got glutened once by my husband by kissing him after he ate pizza.

  7. As a mom who tried to take her kids gluten free due to bad advice, I highly recommend getting them back on gluten and running a full celiac panel.

This year, I gluten challenged my daughter in preparation for testing her and she did fine! Apparently her symptoms were due to something else, because she eats gluten now, and they've resolved anyway. After 13 weeks back on gluten, the doctor ran the tests and all of the tests came back clearly negative.

I feel frustrated that I wasted nearly 5 years trying to feed her gluten free without a good reason to do so.
