  1. I've been gluten-free for over 10 years and can count on one hand how many times I've been glutened. The last time was my own fault ... I ate a wheat hot dog bun thinking it was gluten-free (again... my own fault). Less than 2 hours later, my body just purged itself... constant vomiting and diarrhea shooting out of me at the same time. I ended up having to strip off my clothes and sat on the john w/ a waste can in my lap. It lasted for at least 3 hours. I don't remember any symptoms the next morning... I think I was just happy to be ALIVE!! Seriously... that will NEVER happen again.

  2. I've been gluten-free for 10 years. About a year in, I chowed down on a big hunk of crusty bread slathered w/ butter and NOTHING happened. I actually had thought of a "monthly cheat," but never did it. About 4 years in, I was glutened accidentally and just made it to the bathroom when the diarrhea hit about 4 hours later. Just a few months ago, I ate an entire gluten-filled hot dog bun cause I didn't read the stupid bag and assumed Rudi's was all gluten-free. The bag was full-on wheat buns and I completely missed it. About 2 hours later, I spent the worst 3 hours of my life... both ends erupting like a volcano... until I was emptier than empty. I spent the next day on the couch. So, my answser is YES... you absolutely do become more sensitive the longer you're gluten-free.

  3. Not having anything to so w/ celiac but still makes me shudder is when I went to my OB/GYN pregnant w/ my first (of 3) daughters and told him I was felt so sick all the time I could barely eat because I was so nauseous and barfed so often that I was losing weight rather than gaining it. He literally put his hand on my shoulder and said, "You know... I really think that it's more of an 'in your mind' kind of thing."

I was so shocked... but got it together enough to say as I opened my purse, "Yea... so this plastic bag I carry around at all times in case I barf anywhere and everywhere is surely 'in my mind' too!!"

  4. On the contrary... I gained about 30 lbs!! I'd only had symptoms for a few months and hadn't lost weight like so many do. Then I cooked and baked and ate all the gluten free versions of what I was giving up!

People always asked me what the symptoms of celiac disease are and I'd tell them one of the biggest is unexplained weight loss... then I look down at myself and say, "Um... I didn't GET that one!"

I'm eating super healthy and slowly losing... to get back to where I SHOULD be, and I'm not talking bikini wearing here... I'm just talking about fitting into all the clothes I already have!!
