  1. Having suffered from (at times) severe constipation all my life, my first reaction would be to say that there is no protein in your breakfast.  You start the day off with sugar.  Natural, but sugar none the less.  I might switch things around a bit and have your lunch items for breakfast.  Throw in a nice piece of chicken (or other protein) and veggie for lunch and then finish off your day with your usual.  Add more dark green veggies, protiens and lots and lots of water to your diet.  See how that helps.

I couldn't agree with all of the above comments more!  Although there are no longer children in the home it doesn't matter.  Our home, our rules, our food, our way.  Period.  End of discussion. Our home is gluten free for the safety of those who live here.   We have friends/family that come and stay for several days at a time. We have no problem feeding them during their visit but it's our way.  There is one friend who (sadly) cannot live without her daily dose of bread/bagel/whatever sp she runs to the corner store and finishes eating Before coming back into the house.  If someone had a nut allergy would you bring and eat nuts in their home? 


  3. My partner, who has been "sort" of gluten free (at home but not when she was out) was just diagnosed with this and I too freaked when I read about it. She is now 100% gluten free, which I might add, has not helped with the bad reflux. She is also dairy free. She had a scope in Feb and is scheduled for a re-check in May so we shall see. The info I find is sort of confusing on this disease


  4. Buy one of those larger sized plastic tubs and put all your stuff in there. Label it "gluten free". For refrig items, tuck them in zip locks and label them. You can always make the joke that you will snap the fingers off of anyone that touches your food! Yes, keep things separate and then have fun!


  5. Those first few times of bringing your own food are almost more uncomfortable for others than for us! I have been doing it for so long that now our friends just ask if I need to warm anything up. I usually take my stuff, plate it (so I look like everyone else) and maybe warm it in their micro. And like a couple of others said I always remind people that I am there to enjoy them!


  6. When I first came on this board someone told me that one day it would all seem like second nature to me.  I read that little piece of advice, thought 'yea right lady" and had another pity party.  One day I woke up and realized that it really was all second nature.  I can throw together a fast take-on-the road lunch with no stress.  We took a week long road trip and I didn't stress or bat an eye as to how to manage food.  It all came naturally.  I am almost 5 years into this and it's like it's always been that way.   

     

    Get your paleo mom to share with you.,  That is an awesome (and easy) way to go!

     

    And to who ever it was that shared that little piece of advice.......Sorry I stuck my tongue out at you message and called you a rude name.,   You were right! :D


  7. you could look at it like this..... at a friends home you don't have to help clean up after dinner !  Seriously, yes, life does revolve around food.  It just does.  And it sucks!   Friends say lets go out for dessert, or coffee, or....whatever.  And now you are odd man out.  Yup.  Not fun at all.  After a while it does get better and easier.  You really do leanr that grabbing a cup of coffee is just that....a cup of coffee and no rolls.  It's more about the social part and not about the food.   There are many pity parties to be had.,....and that's ok.  This is a grieving process of sorts as you do have to grieve for what you can't have.  One day you will wake up and feel ok about this.  You will.  In the meantime no one on this board will fault you for crying, stomping your feet or doing what you need to do!   Honestly, how thankful you will be that this was discovered at your age and not 30 years down the line.  Grab some gluten free wedding cake and celebrate life.

I have been constipated since I was an infant (according to my mother!).  They called me the Constipation Kid.  Great nickname! lol  That said, my C became worse after I went g.f. and the dr was unable to explain that.  At almost 5 years I still suffer bouts of it from time to time especially if I eat much in the way of processed food.  If it's in a package then it doesn't work for me.  What keeps me going (no pun) is a daily breakfast that includes sauteed greens, kale, chard or spinach.   If I really get off track then a night or two of Smooth Move organic tea will help get things back on track. 


  9. You probably need all of your levels checked, especially iron and B12's. I hasve seen two different nutritonalist, one was no good. She gave me pages she had printed off the internet. The other one was excellent but she was part of the Warren Celiac Foundation in San Diego so she knew celiac. I think it depends on who and where you can find one. You can prob get as much info on the internet.

So much of it comes with experience and doing what is right for you.  Every Friday we go out with friends for margaritas and Mexican food.  It's a small place, not one I would trust, so I always just take something for me to eat and drink the wine.  For me times like that are all about the social end of it.    Last summer, while on vacation, we went out for our usual Friday night but I walked off forgetting my food at home,.  The server asked why I wasn't ordering and I briefly explained.  Turns out he too was celiac and suggested two meal options to me and promised he would notify kitchen and keep an eye on my meal.  It turned out so well that we ate there again!  But....that is sort of an exception I think.

     

    One thing I do is keep a zip lock of cooked frozen meatballs in the freezer, along with some veggies.  That way even at the last minute I have an instant meal ready to go for eating at a possibly unsafe (by my standards!) place.   


  11. Typically I go only to places that have a gluten free menu.  No g,f. menu and I won't eat there.  Most of the bigger chain restaurants that have a g.f. menu are pretty careful.  Bottom line is that you have to do what feels most comfortable for you.    Also, since g.f. has become so popular I foind that it is best to advise the wait staff that I am g.f. not by choise but have celiac.  They pay more attention that way!

I have been g.f. almost five years - faithfully so!   I am on s high dose of iron supps and b12.  I have tried to correct my levels with diet but the dr says this is one of the issues with celiac and I will prob always have this issue.  I did b12 shots for awhile which really helped "jump start" the levels and now seem ok with just supplements.  Guess it's just one of those little issues we have to put up with.


  13. Start off with good whole foods like meat, veggies and fruit.  Season with some herbs.  This way you don't have to worry about any ingredients - those foods are naturally gluten free. Plus whole foods, without any added ingredients, are easier to digest and help with a healing gut.  This way it makes it a whole lot easier to determine if a particular food is bothering you (other than gluten of course!!)
