ARCHIVED Are You A Celiac?
Mari replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I often say "I can't eat gluten". Sometimes I add "it can make me very sick" I think that 'Celiacs' is rather cute - younger people using their own terms to both convey that this is a limiting problem and that their generation is dealing with it in their own way. -
ARCHIVED Should I Try To Contact Birth Parents After Testing Positive?
Mari replied to shopgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would think that if you just contact your b.mom telling her she may have given you a "disease' that would be like any mon's worst fear coming true. Truely upsetting and shocking. And even worse because she gave you up and couldn't care for you. Since you have not had the genetic analysis of the HLA DQ gene you don't know if you inherited this intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Unemployment/disability
Mari replied to Loey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are lawyers who specialize in unemployment and disability so that might be a good place to start. A Legal Aid worker might also help. I got unemployment ins. after I worked on the Census but that was a special case, congress passed a bill which funded it because they paid so little in wages. Another time I was refused unimployment because I had... -
Lab tests showed that my Vit D and B12 livels are very low. I have been trying to find a Vit D which I can tolerate but so far no luck. It may be that they have some fish oil and I can't eat fish. Having the same problem finding an OK Vit E. Anybody else have this problem? What do you take? The Dr also advised sub-lingual B12. I have started increasing...

I had this problem from my mid 20's to 50's. When I was Diagnosed with celiac disease later on the genetic DQ test showed I was a DQ8/ DQ6 with DQ b alleles 302 and 602. The The 602 gave me a predisposition to develop sleep apnea. I had other breating problems and sometimes a shortness of breath. But it was interesting in that the symptoms of sleep apnea...

ARCHIVED Heart Palpitations On Gluten
Mari replied to michayla's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had what felt like heart palpatations for years but they were really spasms in my upper intestine. This was the first symptom to get better when I went gluten free but I still can feel milder spasms at night sometimes due to some irritation or inflamation from some other food. I have used strong peppermint tea, the spices turmeric and cinnamon, Milk of... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Re: Blood Work Results
Mari replied to Momma Ta's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with CassP and with so many relatives with gluten sensitivity it would be wise to go gluten free. The usual blood tests may not be positive so you might consider having the stool tests which are more sensitive and may show celiac related antibodies. See the Enterolab.com website. Several; other labs now offer stool testing. More information about... -
ARCHIVED Reacting To Trace Amounts Of Wheat
Mari replied to happylittlemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm still very sensitive to gluten after 5 years gluten-free. I don't have a wheat allergy so my symptoms start about 6 hours after eating gluten. If I inhale gluten as with a pot of boiling pasta I begin reacting almost immediately with brain fog, poor balance and decreasing energy. -

ARCHIVED Can't Pinpoint What Is Causing My Joint Pain
Mari replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Grains , nuts, coffee and many more foods are acid-forming foods and you may get considerable relief if you learn to balance your diet with alkaline forming foods. (also called acid ash and alkaline ash foods) Our bodies are normally slightly alkaline - the more acid we become the more problems are likely to develop. Rigid and cramping muscles, deposits of... -
This is just a guess but you may be releasing toxins into your small intestine. Eating meats or anything with fats/oils triggers the release of bile - it is squirted from the gall bladder into the liquified food as it is released from the stomach by the pyloric valve. The liver, where bile is made, filters out toxins and pollutants in the blood and they are...

Urticaria - skin problems including hives are caused by allergies. Food allergies are only one of the causes, skin contact allergies are also quite common. Lyme Disease, often found in Celiacs, causes rashes anywhere on the body. Ask your Dr to test you for this.

ARCHIVED Test Results-Elevated Anti Gliadin
Mari replied to suzanne*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My test results were the same as yours, only the the alpha gliadin was elevated. Instead of letting the Dr do more tests I ordered the genetic DNA marker test. This test showed that I had inherited genes from both of them which put me at risk for gluten problems, one from autoimmune Celiac Disease and the other for non-celiac sprue (Leaky Gut Syndrome, not... -

ARCHIVED Watermelon And Honey Sensitivies?
Mari replied to revenant's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I did a quick search for watermelon sensitivity - it shares antigens which cause allergic reactions with grasses and ragweed. Sometimes when I get muscle stiffness after eating too much watermelon it has disturbed the acid/base balance in my body. It helps to take some baking soda in water. Honey contains mold toxins which can cause various symptoms.... -

ARCHIVED I Have Celiac, But No Sickness When I Cheat... Help!
Mari replied to moats1234's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It may be that you need some positive feedback to counteract the negative aspect of such a restrictive lifestyle. Ask your Dr. to set up tests to check your antibody levels at regular intervals so you can follow your success with the diet. There are several other Celiac/gluten forums with people who will support and sympathasize with you and you will find... -
ARCHIVED Was I Glutened?
Mari replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This sounds more like an allergic reaction to me. I've read that some people have gotten meds from their Drs to cope with allergic reactions - maybe benadryl or antihistamines. The cheese may have contained mold toxins and it may help to take high doses of Vit. C. Cheese also can contain a variety of other organisms which may overgrow very rapidly. People... -

I have had a problem with irritability for years and had no clue to what was making me irritable until I read about the toxins some intestinal bacteria produce which triggers mood problems. The author was Hulda Clark, PhD, ND. She used medical research and her dignostic methods to conclude that some enteric organisms such as Shigella and toxin producing E...

Being hungry and snaking was which alerted me to a problem with intestinal candida. I had had vaginal Candida/yeasts which sometimes flared up but it wasn't until I read messages about the intestinal problems that clued me in to the cause of some of my problems. Candida produces something which stirs up the hunger response and tells us to eat, and especially...

Back 50 years ago gluten sensitivity was usually diagnosed by eliminating wheat, barley and rye from the diet and noticing the improvement. Your son may have had a wheat allergy and this may have cleared up as he got older. He may have had non-celiac sprue (Leaky Gut Syndrome) which cleared up on the gluten free diet, especially if he was gluten-free at ...

There are severak thungs I have done to help the "hungry' feelings and reduce craving sweets and gain weight. I had Intestinal Candida which causes a person to feel hungry especially for sweets - used Candida Herbs and Neem. Bacterial overgrowths - used probiotics (goat's milk kefir worked best) and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Had a tangle of tapeworms...
