  1. Create a food allergy information pack for the school? Include your child's issue's and the care that must be taken, but also include dairy, and peanut allergy info and distribute it to all the teachers. Each class could include the names of the kids that have specific issues. (Keeping in mind I have no children, I'm just thinking of what I would like to have if I walked into an unknown situation).

I'm a celiac teacher assistant in a kindergarten classroom. I would meet with the entire grade level team with principal. My school would do this for you. I would have lot's of info about gluten free for them and want to know any products they would have in their classroom that would contain gluten. I would bring up your concern for a sub and how they would handle that. If there is an assistant in the classroom, she would be a go to guy! I am always there when my teacher is not and I know all of my kids and what they are allergic to! In my school we tend to love the same subs and my teacher always try to get them. I would ask about that as well, if they have certain subs they like to get. If everyone on grade level knows how serious this is, they would be able to let the sub know and also keep an eye out. If you get a teacher or teacher assistant that you feel is unsafe for your child..demand a teacher change! I'm not sure how old your child is? I know I open up a few things for my kids at lunch. You might want to teach your child to open up everything. I am a big hand washer, but others may not be. I would also ask about lunchroom, how tables are cleaned etc...

  2. im likin this one right now->

Thanks everyone! I found out by my food diary I felt not so good with tomato, I don't find potato so bad though. I've never been able to eat peppers without gastro problems. I also find out that I think I am sensitive with brown rice. I am hoping white is alright going to try that soon. I'm going to try this bread, thanks! I haven't progressed into baking yet, but look forward to it!

  3. I know some tylenol is gluten-free and others not - like slow release or whatever it is called - I guess probalby not slow relese maybe rapid release - is NOT gluten-free, but "extra strength caplets" are. Avocado is really fatty and can cause fatty-related pooping issues, at least for me. Anyway, good luck in figuring it out. Sorry that happened to you!

Thanks for yor reply. I'm still trying to figure it out. I think I'm sensitve to brown rice as well. It seems I take one step ahead with going gluten-free and two steps back.

  4. Somehow I have come down with a cold or something. I have a nagging cough, sinus congestion, extremely sore throat. Was up all night last night coughing and blowing my nose. I had some halls cough drops but they weren't cutting it. I have upped my vitamin C and I'm drinking lots of liquids to try to fight this thing, but I think I'm going to need an OTC drug. I hate drugs. I only take as a last resort. I am very sensitive so something that I can safely take half of the recommended dose of would be good. I know how to do a search, but my head is too foggy and I'm too tired, please tell me some OTC drugs that are gluten free and soy free would be good too, but in this state I will risk the soy. Thanks in Advance.

PS: I know all the natural remedies, have neti pot, tea with honey, etc.

My son loved the neti pot when he had his last cold. He said it was "amazing" www.glutenfreedrugs.com has a list of gluten-free cold meds. I think they are under both list and the alpha list.

  5. I've googled bboth this morning with different answers. I had to take advil for a medical biopsy yesterday. While waiting in office a full blown gluten attack starts! This morning I took some tylenol for the mild headache. I ate the same thing for lunch both days. So any ideas? Are the meds gluten-free? I know glutenfreedrugs has them both as gluten-free, so if that is true. I introduced avocado yesterday and today. I'm starting to have another reaction, sharp pains in my sides and foggy brain. Help! I've been so carefull in my kitchen, so I don't think it was from there.

  6. I know where another one is. I might call them. When I asked about gluten issues, the cashier had no clue what I was talking about. She turned to ask a coworker... blank stare. Asked a manager... no clue. Then she came back and said yes, the dressing has gluten because it had cornsyrup. huh? I asked about the fries.

That should have been my first clue LOL, Thank you all for your responses and taking the time to let me know. This way I know what question to ask. (seperate fryer for fries)

I don't know what else it could have been. I had the fruit on salad with chargrilled chicken with vinergerette which didn't list anything suspicious. Maybe it was something I ate ealier?

    does it ever get easier?

I always ask a manager, because the cashiers don't know. Most of the managers don't either, but I explain it to them. What I ask the managers is how the salads are prepared. I have been told at most of the Chic-fil-a's that the salads have their own seperate station away from the other products. I don't get the fruit one, because I don't know if the fruit was cut somewhere else. I had one cashier be really nice and bring me a few dressings for me to read the lable. I don't eat out much at all usually. While on vacation I did eat at two different Chic fil a's and did alright. They still put the individual courton and sunflower packs in the bag (one gave me saltines) I think it's oout of habit and I don't eat them. The sunflower seeds contain wheat.

  7. Carolina Your link didn't work work for me.

One other thing to note is that if any of your drugs are generic you or the pharmacist should be checking with the company at each refill as the binders can be changed at the companies will. With name brand drugs the binders need to stay the same. Also any list can be out of date as of the day it was last updated so IMHO it is always best to double check with the maker.

Sorry about the link, it was glutenfreedrugs.com that was mentioned. I didn't see that mentioned before. I try to stay brand name, if not they are pretty good at calling. Thanks for the info.

  8. Hi all!

I am still working on the fine tuning of my new gluten-free life. I take a few pills every day that are prescribed to me from my doctor. I have heard that some pills can contain gluten, but I am a little overwhelmed about how I find out this information?! Do you ask the pharmacist? Your doctor? Do you look up the drug name/manufacturer/ingredients online? It's not like RX's come with an ingredients list right? Or does it?!

Here is what I take, but I don't know the manufacturers just yet, I'll call Rite Aid tomorrow and get details, but if anyone has experience with any of these, I'd love for you to chime in!

    Atenolol - blood pressure

    Prozac - depression (although since going gluten-free, I don't think I need them anymore...but that's another story!)

    Xanax - anxiety

My dietion told me about this site and my pharmacist uses it. Has anyone used this site before?

  9. I have had the worst luck with people not understanding or having NO clue what I'm talking about when I ask about gluten ingredients in things. From people saying "Oh no there's no sugar in this" to telling me they checked the ingredients and everything is A-OK! because the actual WORD gluten is not listed in the ingredients!! (I wish it was that easy!!!!!) So it has happened again and I need some help. I have seen on here people talking about needing to check dental cleaning supplies while at the dentist office. I have an appointment next week (my first since diagnosis) and so I called them yesterday to give them a head-up on my new diagnosis and also to give them time to find out about the gluten in their products. Well of courseeeeee they say they've never heard of gluten and no one has asked about it before in the office. (great!) I live in a relatively well-sized city with multiple gluten free menus in different restaurants, large celiac support group, etc, so I KNOW I'm not the only one in the city that has these concerns. Anyway...... the woman says let me find out and call you tomorrow. So I get a phone call this morning from her saying that she had one of the dental assistants check the ingredients and I'm all good b/c gluten is not listed as an ingredient. Of course I have to go through the whole thing where I have to explain that gluten itself will not be listed, they need to look for other keywords etc, and could they contact the manufacturer and ask them b/c they are likely to know what sort of excipients are in things. Now, I'm waiting....... My question for everyone, what do you do in these situations? I always end up feeling like I am not getting a for sure certain answer to feel comfortable that gluten is not in things, like pills, dental stuff, etc. How do you get thru to people? HOw do you find out for sure if it's safe? I am having so many problems with this. Food is not a big deal, if I can't find out for sure I just don't eat it, but for example, I can't just stop going to the dentist forever. How do you help people get a clue??

I plan to do what Richard suggested, call the company of the products. My dental office had no clue as well.

  10. I have been able to take meals into certain places, but a club?? Can you call the club in advance to ask? I don't know if they would like the brought in beer, they may frown upon it. They see it as a cut in their profit. However, you may run across someone who is understanding. There are few places around me that have Redbridge on tap. I have found the more "different beers" a places carries they have Redbridge. You may want to call and ask if they serve that and or wine and go from there. When I traveled I made sure to always have snacks and fruit with me wherever I went. Bottle water and soft soap to wash my hands. Paper towels and baggies were my friend on my vacation. Have fun!

  11. I feel terrible if I get stressed out, AND I felt worse after coming back from the beach. It's possible that you are getting tiny cc's and they add up to a big reaction?

I love that you are taking the precautions with doing the dishes, I would too! Just give it time, I am finally not having constant pain in my side, 4 months after going gluten-free! It is hard to be patient but it was really worth it to me :)

Thanks! I'm trying to look around my home for CC possiblities. I made a "bread" basket for my children and it has its own table away from counters. They can only use that table for making their sandwich or toast. Some days the pain gets overwhleming. My sides hurt all the time except when I first wake up. Thanks again for the hope! :)

  12. I got up with a little pain this morning and it increased as the day went on. My side hurt really bad and I have back pain. No headache right now. I cannot figure out why the increased pain. I have pain everyday, usually moderate after I eat and it grows from there. I've bought a new pot for my food etc. It gives me hope when I see it does take months to feel better, I just wish I could figure out if it's because my intestines are shot or am I CC myself a little here and there. On vacation I was feeling better, coming home I'm hurting more. So, is it my home or I was more relaxed on vacation?

Do any of you feel worse if you are under stress?

I also have to hand wash dishes. I switched brushes and use gloves, but feel like I react there. I clean my dishes first, change brushes etc, and wash the gluten ones. Am I being paranoid?

  13. This diet is hard, no question. When you get up in the morning, you have to ask yourself whether your food preference is more important, or the chance to test for sure whether celiac is the cause of your crushing fatigue.

I tend to eat fruit and some cheese or a Larabar or a Kind bar in the morning. Sometimes I eat peanut butter on gluten-free toast because it's fast and something I really like. On the weekend, I make an omelette and gluten-free toast or huevos rancheros with corn tortillas (Mission brand is made on dedicated lines).

Huevos rancheros sounds yummy, thanks for the idea! I am so thankful for this forum!

  14. Yes, I was referring specifically to Rice and Corn Chex. They both say loudly "Gluten Free" right on the box, though I understand that that's something new. I eat them almost every day for breakfast. You have reactions to these cereals? Wow, what do you eat for breakfast?

I have found there are a few gluten free products that I'm sensitive to. Chex being one of them, I did aliright with a glutino cereal. I eat eggs/boiled usually and fresh fruit for breakfast. I do well with Kinnikinnick products. Right now I'm trying not to eat many gluten free replacement foods.

  15. Can some one help an old lady out that needs a good gluten-free eye cream and face lotion? I've tried Burts Bees and we aren't getting along. Tried oil of olay..no good. As soon as I put theses creams on my face it turns it red. Any help or ideas?! I called Bare Escentails and they said that thier creams had wheat and oat in them. I couldn't get a clear answer from a few others. I emailed NARS. but haven't heard back on them.

  16. I researched the places we go and Chick Fil A is one of them. I found that the waffle fries were listed as gluten-free. Ok... suspect but OMGOSH I love them. So I took a chance and failed. Within 20 minutes I was running to the bathroom. When I got home, I told my hubby I ate gluten so I was pretty useless for the rest of the day. I suggested they probably didn't have a dedicated fryer. Well, he worked at Chick fil a back in the day and told me that yes, they fry everything in the same oil.

I shoulda known better, I don't eat fries anywhere else due to this so what was I thinking? I chaulk it up to a noob move.. because well.. Im a noob to all this and still learning. Just wanted to save someone else the pain.

    Tiff

    gluten-free since 7-12-10

Since I am new to having celiac and know I am very sensitive to CC, I get the grilled garden salad with FF honey mustard dressing. I have eaten at 4 Chic Fil A's. I had three that were great and one not so great. I am too scared to try the fries right now. Has anyone tried the carrot salad or anything else?

  17. Looks like there are quite few chains there: Open Original Shared Link

Are you going for vacation or business? Either way, have fun!

Thank you so much! I had come across this site a few days ago and could not find it again in my searches. It's vacation and this will be my first attempt out to eat. Thanks again!
