  1. At a 7-week follow up after my daughter's celiac diagnosis, we found that she's low on Vitamin D. (24.2 was the number.) Does anyone know which Vitamin D is best? Her low number is despite taking some D I got at Target, which must not have been very good. Thank you!
  2. My daughter is 13, we've been gluten free for 10 weeks and she is now starting to feel better. (As are we all - even those of us who tested negative for celiac.) It takes a while. She is still fatigued and we found her Vitamin D level low on a recheck. And she's a kid! Keep going. If you're feeling mildly better now, you should continue to improve. :-)
  3. I went gluten free just because my daughter had to. I tested negative on a blood test, but I feel a TON better following a gluten free diet. The doctors kept telling me it was because I had my gall bladder out 13 years ago. While you are at an age that makes it difficult to follow the diet, it is possible and it does pay off. My daughter felt anxiety beginning...
  4. I keep the NoGii bars on hand. You have to order them on Amazon, but they have 20 grams of protein. Tempo bars from Ortho Molecular (chocolate mint) are also good.
  5. Just found out through some other parents of celiac kids that the Amy's Gluten Free Mac & Cheese is, in fact, not gluten free. It's prepared in the same facility as wheat. Very disappointing, especially when the first words you read on the box are 'gluten free', The investigation continues...
  6. In the results that came back last week, her D is at 24.2, so the NP said to take 2000 IUs of Vitamin D a day. Will that be enough? It seems really low and I am wondering if her pediatrician should prescribe a higher dose. Also, I am confused by a high B12 result: It's 1071. Should I take any action on that? I see they did not test ferritin. Hemoglobin...
  7. Did lots of blood tests. Found out that her Vitamin D is low. Getting there...
  8. I am so glad to have this community as a resource. It's more helpful than all the doctors we've seen - combined. Everyone gives advice and shares ideas I would never think of. I thought an allergist was an allergist and I wouldn't know differently if you all hadn't taken the time, so thank you! And the food journal/elimination diet makes sense. Now that we...
  9. Thought I would send an update. My daughter got some blood drawn and her Vitamin D is low. W also have an upper GI scheduled and have been referred to an allergist. Does this all seem logical to you guys? To me, the Vitamin D makes sense. I think the upper GI makes sense, but should I hold off on seeing an allergist? If so, is it simple blood testing or the...
  10. Welcome, Kimmy 1119! We are only about 8 weeks ahead of you. While my daughter has celiac for sure, my husband and I both tested negative. However, we all decided to go gluten free. Though I tested negative, I feel a ton better and daily stomach aches are a thing of the past. My daughter's migraines, rashes and abdominal pain have subsided. It's overwhelming...
  11. I have heard that the body doesn't absorb the vitamins - break down the pill - as well as others that are made differently. My chiropractor recommends Rainbow Light brand. They aren't that much more expensive than Up and Up and you can see the difference by looking at them and smelling them. (They actually don't smell very good!) So even if they're gluten...
  12. I got a bread machine with a gluten free cycle and the only thing it made is something like Play-Doh. I have found a recipe that makes a biscuit-like bread using a Cuisinart, if you're interested.
  13. I never thought of laundry detergent before. I've been using a "natural" lavender detergent, but I am finding "natural" means plant based which usually means gluten. All the other advice is much appreciated as well. The teen stuff is hard enough; pile the celiac on top of that and it's even harder. Best of luck to you, too!
  14. Have you seen a rheumatologist? How about an MD/ND? Keep trying. Find a new doctor and create a new door to walk through.
  15. Seems related to me. In the books I've read so far, anxiety is linked to celiac. Good for you!
  16. Moving to whole foods, too. Forgot to mention it!
  17. Thanks everyone! We went gluten free as a family, but I am going to double check the ingredients on everything. Also, do almond milk for a while. And I may have found a tween health clinic at the U of MN where I'll get her vitamin, iron and thyroid tested. Thanks for all the advice. It's hard to know when to worry or when it's time to take action! Time to...
  18. Hi everyone! My daughter was diagnosed with celiac. She's 13. We've been gluten free for 6 weeks. Her stomach pain seems to be subsiding, but symptoms still include fatigue, rash/acne, upset stomach (not pain), heartburn and nausea. She has missed a period. I've got her taking a multi-vitamin, B, D and fish oil. Also drinking Lifeway Kefir milk, which...
  19. Who did your GI refer you to? Did you get on a cancellation list? I've seen a Rheumatologist - Dr. Gary Baker at the Allina St. Paul clinic. Have not gotten results back yet. He is a connective tissue specialist. I've also got an appointment with Dr. Chris Foley, an MD/ND in the Shoreview area. Unfortunately, both book months out. However, I did...
  20. I've got an appointment for one in July. I think you've done your homework, she's got good reviews and she could have some good advice that an internist/gi wouldn't have. Share what you find out with us!
  21. I had the same dilemma. I ended up playing it safe and donated it.
  22. I had the same question because the tests were for my 13-year-old daughter. All the doctors we talked to said yes, you want to be sure and an endoscopy/biopsy lets you know for sure. The doctor can actually see any damage. If you went on a gluten-free diet, then got tested, your test results would change and you would not know. For us, it helped us really...
  23. I am new to celiac (6-weeks gluten free), but am learning that celiac is an autoimmune disease and autoimmune diseases can cause migraines, skin rashes and joint pain. I am reading a book called Living Well with Autoimmune Diseases and it's helpful.
