  1. I have been gluten intolerant for 20plus years.  I tested negative for celiac about 5 yrs ago but was on meds that kept me from throwing up.  At the time I thought that was all I needed to do but my more recent research has shown me that many of my other health issues have been from the gluten intolerance.  So, I gave up the medicine for a gluten free diet.  Now that I know about the hashimoto's I am trying to figure out my next step.  I just had my annual physical and the Dr. tested for vitamin D (which I have been deficient in before), vitamin B12, and several of the thyroid tests.  I have been hearing about the probiotics and enzymes and will have to try those.  I also am thinking about going to an endo. doctor to see what they may have to say.

  2. Thanks for the response.  I didn't think it did, but I had a doctor tell be that it did.  I thought I'd ask people who REALLY know; i.e. people who actually have the disorder! =)

So than, what is the best way to manage it?  My symptoms are not severe, but I am so tired of struggling with my, not constant low energy but bouts of it!  I was hoping that going gluten-free would make a noticeable difference, but it has been 2 months and I have not seen any change in that area.

  3. A few years ago I had a goiter in my right thyroid.  After I had a thyroidectomy (right side only),  I was diagnosed with hashimoto's.  I am wondering if, since the damaged/diseased part of my thyroid was removed, does that mean the hashimoto's is gone?  My thyroid has tested fine since then and I have not had to be put on thyroid meds.  My main concern in this question is that even though I am not exhausted ALL the time, my energy level is still not where I feel that it should be.  Is this the hashimoto's or something else?

  4. I have been gluten-free for about 2 months now due to intolerance.  One of the books I have recently read in researching the topic of celiac and gluten intolerance is  book "Wheat Belly".  This book talks about the reasons why EVERYBODY should be gluten-free regardless of whether or not they have celiac or gluten intolerance.  Based on the info in this book and to support me, my husband has gone gluten-free.  As a result, he has already experienced several improvements with arthiritis in his hand and plantar faciatis.  He also is slowly loosing inches from his waiste.   I also have recently  heard and seen talk about the "Gluten-Free fad diet" and how for people without celiac issues, it is a fraud and an unnecessary lifestyle change.  I am just curious about any opinions you all might have on people without gluten issues following the gluten-free diet and how to encourage others to follow the diet if indeed it is a healthy thing for all people.  Thanks!

  5. My husband and I have both been gluten-free for around 5 weeks now.  I will post for both of us.  I took meds (generic ludiomil) for over 20 years so that I would not throw up everyday.  If I missed more than 2 days I would throw up. I have been off the medicine from the day I went gluten free and no vomiting!  I believe my hair (which has always been on the thick side) is becoming more thick.  I no longer am struggling to stay awake while driving to work (50 miles one way).  My afternoon/evening energy is slowly starting to improve.  My BMs are no longer fatty (but seem to be more stinky...lol I am guessing because there is no fatty film barrier holding the stink back. lol).  My husband had arthiritis pain in his fingers and that is gone.  He also has plantar faciatis and that seems to be gone.  He is starting to loose his love handles.  He says his brain fog is decreasing.

Can't wait to see us in 6 months!

  6. I have been gluten-free for about 6 weeks now.  I do not have celiac but am very intolerant and have been since my early 20s.  Back then, when I first started throwing up everyday, I got down to 90lbs.  My mornings went like this.  I would eat cereal for breakfast and then start coughing and would cough so much that I would throw up.  Eventually I learned my body well enough that I knew when to stop eating before I would get to that point.  All of that to say, I started drinking ensure everyday.  I never had any problems with it and it kept me from waisting away to nothing!  At that point in my life I had no clue what gluten was, so did not know that it was gluten-free, but it was sure a life saver for me!

  7. I am wondering if anyone else has had an issue with flavored coffee.  I have been gluten-free for about 6 weeks now and am doing great with it. Last night  I drank some Millstone brand cinnamon hazelnut coffee and this morning I woke up hacking and coughing, runny nose, burping like crazy.  I tried eating breakfast and could tell if I continued to eat I was going to throw up. (my typical reaction to gluten)  My husband mentioned that he read about having to be careful about flavored coffee having gluten in it.  Just wondering if anyone knows about that brand of coffee or have had similar reactions.

  8. Yup!!!! I definitely got worse before I got better. Some people call it 'gluten withdrawal,' I don't know what it was in my case, but it took a few months. Others start to feel better in a few days or weeks.

I didn't realize at first that I had also developed lactose intolerance and probably temporary intolerance to all kinds of other things. So you might also try laying off dairy and keep a food journal to see if other stuff bothers you.

I took longer than some (6-7 months) to start to feel better, maybe because of getting accidentally glutened along the way. It can take a while to learn all the sneaky places gluten hides! Eating out can cause lots of problems, even if you are careful.

Also please don't be discouraged by my experience. Although it took a while to feel better, I would never, ever go back! Besides my GI symptoms healing, my middle-aged joint pain is almost entirely gone! Wouldn't trade that feeling for all the pasta in the world.

Thanks for the response.  Good to know that it is not all in my head, especially the extra lack of energy part!  When I first heard about celiac/intolerance and before I was tested I went off my medicine and wheat for 7-8 days to see what would happen.  It was the first time ever that I could go without the medicine and not throw up by the 3rd day.  Just to test myself, on day 8 I ate some pizza....I was in the bathroom 10 minutes later hugging the porceline god!!  That is when I got tested.  Having said all that, I think part of the problem now is that for the last 3 months I was/am having a hard time getting my Rx filled because Walmart's distribution warehouse has been out of it.  Until a week ago when I stopped the gluten, I was taking the meds just every 3 days and continuing to eat gluten.  It worked for a while but caught up to me recently and I am now feeling the full effects of having gluten in my system.  I am so ready and excited to see the positive changes to my health!!

  9. I was tested for celiac 5 or so years ago and do not have the disease, but am definitely gluten intolerant.  I now believe I have been for 20 plus years.  At that time, the symptom that sent me to doctors was daily vomiting and losing lots of weight.  When I finally found a doctor that paid any attention to me, they did all sorts of testing, but I don't think much at all was known about celiac and so was never tested for that and the wheat connection was never made.  The doctor finally put me on ludiomil to see what would happen.  The vomiting stopped and so I thought I was good!  When I went through the celiac testing 5 yrs ago it was discovered that I was negative for it (no intestional damage, etc.), so again I thought the medicine was all I needed.  Now I am finding out that my thyroid problems, lack of energy, and other issues I am having is all related to the intolerance.  All that to say that I am now one-week gluten free and off the meds (for another long story).  My problem is that the symptoms of crampy gas pains, low energy and nausea, low grade headaches are worse now than before.  I am wondering if anyone else experienced this right after cutting out the gluten and how long before the good health effects started happening.
