  1. So my whole house is 100% gluten free. My daughter keeps getting glutened and I'm not sure from where. She is only 4 and not in school and nobody baby sits her (I'm a stay at home mom). We have been to a few birthday parties this past month but I was sure I monitored everything and made sure I brought/made gluten-free food. The only thing that seems to make sense is the canyon bakehouse bread because this happens about 4 hours after eating it and she has had it almost every day. Anyone else have any suspicion....Also if it was cross contamination from something else or if she had a bite of some gluten a few weeks ago from a party shouldn't she be better by now?

  2. My heart is so broken. We cut gluten out of my child's diet because she was chronically constipated, in doing so we discovered that while not ingesting gluten she went from crazy temper tantrums that I thought were a normal part of age 3 to a happy easy to please kid. I guess out of laziness and both mine and my husbands family thinking we were nuts and just trying to fallow a trend we brought gluten back. I noticed that when she would ingest gluten it would only take about 4 to 5 hours before her tantrums would start...always about nothing. so tonight after she was calm she said mommy I'm sorry I couldn't stop the mad. After hearing that I started to cry, I feel like I failed her and I continue to do so because I almost have to keep convincing myself that gluten is the culprit. And I try to tell my family that it's not like her behavior is just different its night and day. How long after ingesting gluten do you think behavior changes can be seen. I read all the time how some people have reversed or helped their child behavior and even autism by cutting out certain foods. How can something like gluten or any food alter behavior that quickly and drastically. I'm just trying to get a better understanding and I'm open to any advice. Thank you all so much

  3. My 18 month old is very tiny she is in 1% for weight. She had diarrhea and constipation. Because she is so little the doctor ordered lab work her protein, c3 & c4 are low. So I upped her protein in her diet and they tested for protein in urine and a renal ultrasound. Thankfully her ultrasound came back good and there is no protein & blood in her urine. I feel like we should be going to a gastro doctor or even an immunologist but our pediatrician is sending us to a Kidney doctor. Inceliac can you have low protein and low c3 &c4 should I ask my doctor to send us to gastro?

  4. We did go through something similar with my second son. He had fissures as an exclusively breastfed infant (which definitely seems odd, looking back--obviously, I was eating something that didn't agree with him and caused much straining). And, then, despite using "elimination communication" (which was successful with his brother), he was in so much pain while pooping that he could go only standing up (necessitating diapers after several months in underwear). This was when he was around 21-22 months. The doctors recommended prune juice, other fiber, etc.

We decided to try gluten-free since it helped his older brother (and celiac runs in the family). This was under the guidance of a GI (who will diagnose him, at most, with only non-celiac gluten intolerance). He has not had fissures. And has not been complaining about his stomach being in pain the same way he was around age 2.5. (I thought his blood work was interesting--low total IgA, low Vitamin D, and low iron, but the GI said that his low total IgA wasn't THAT low, every kid his age has low iron, and every kid in the NE has low Vitamin D. In contrast, my son did not have low iron or vitamin D as an infant.)

I would do blood work. It's not always accurate for babies and very young children. But, I agree for school it would be better to know something--whether it's celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerance. Neither of my children has needed a doctor's note at either of the schools--but, the schools are private, so that might make a difference. I am pretty sure the GI would sign off on NCGI, though.

    Good luck!

Did The GI make you do an endoscopy? or anything like that? And once he was gluten free are his symptoms gone? How well does he tolerate corn? I think her constipation could be gone but she is afraid to go, made GI appt but 1 month away. Thanks for the advise!

  5. My daughter's main symptom was also constipation. She is three and was just diagnosed about a month ago. We have been 100% gluten free since then, and still having some issues with her bowel movements.  She is at least no longer straining so hard that she is bleeding, so I am taking comfort in the small improvements.  How often does she have a movement? If she is managing to still poop once a day, or at least every other day, and it is still very hard, that sounds like a definite red flag for celiac.  But like the other posts, it will be really helpful to have a true diagnosis to be sure how to proceed, and also for the peace of mind of knowing you are doing the right thing.  Hopefully you can find a doctor that will be able to provide the care that you need for your little one, I know from experience it is so scary.  Especially awful when you are scared to feed your own child!  My daughter's GI has been great to endure my HOST of questions, and has referred me to a dietician that has really been a blessing.  I would highly recommend working with someone who can help you navigate all the craziness. Best Wishes!

She doesn't have a bm unless given an enama or senna tea. I think we have been gluten-free long enough but I think the prob now is she is scared to go. I'm trying everything to help her go without using mirilax because that stuff is really bad. But I'm starting to get desperate. I see her everyday having the erge to go and then she fights it. So I feel that her constipation could be gone if she wasn't scared. Made an appt to GI but 1 month away.

  6. I don't understand why your doc wouldn't at least do the basic celiac blood test before advising you to go gluten-free? The tooth decay on a small child is a real warning sign of Celiac. But, without a " real" diagnosis, you will have issues with school, doctors, etc. I am so sorry your doctor is uninformed. This just makes it harder for you.

It really does, thanks for your sympathy. I guess thats why I am trying to educate myself as best I can.

  7. O.k so I know the best thing to do is bring my baby to a GI dr. but after talking it over with her primary we decided before she goes through any crazy tests we should try a gluten free diet. My poor baby has been constipated since she was 8 months old we have tried everything from  senna, prunes, tons of juice & enama's all of which relieve the constipation at the time of use but it always comes back. To make a long story short she  also has low iron and she has horribe tooth enamel...oh and there is always snotty looking stuff in her very hard very large poop.  2 months ago (when we discovered her tooth decay) we cut out sugar and gluten or anything that would stick to her teeth or turn into sugar and after about 2 weeks of that her constipation was gone for the first time ever......slowly I started giving her pasta and pancakes like once or twice a week....and for a few weeks she was still pooping fine till all of a sudden after adding gluten back in she is constipated again. Thats why her dr. suggested we try cutting out gluten and see if thats really it.... My heart is breaking we have only been gluten free for about a week  this time and there is no changes I know it takes longer then that..I am writing this because is there anybody else out there with a similar story...Everyday I question her symptoms and compare them to everything I read on line. I though maybe it could be yeast then I though maybe she has something wrong with her spine...I know time will tell but It's hard to see my baby struggle to poop....does this sound like anybody else???? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  8. I've seen a couple of articles recently on tooth enamel defects, if that is the problem, you may be dealing with celiac.  I lost the enamel off of my teeth while I was young.  It was a big mystery to everyone, the dentist and my parents.  Now, they are telling dentists to have the patient get checked for celiac.

I think it is a great idea to stick to nourishing food and cutting out sugar!  If you want to test for celiac, you need to be eating gluten, so it doesn't false negative.  Perhaps you have already decided she should be gluten free.

Well, I am happy you are trying to figure this out.  I wish you and your daughter all the best.

    D

Thank You for your kind words. Our plan is to keep a log of what she eats and when she poops. And we are cutting out gluten to see if that changes anything. Her teeth are a mystery to us too.... besides raisins and juice I never felt like she had anything bad enough for her to get a brand new tooth and 2 months later there was decay on it. Thanks again!

  9. So my 2 year old has been constipated since she was 8 months old...(when I started her on oatmeal) Since she was 8 months old we cut out and added all sorts of food items to see if any change could help relieve her constipation........ Looking back I think we never cut anything out long enough...we would only go for about 3 days to a week.  So we gave her juice , raisins, peach necture, enama's anything to help her...the whole time her Doctor telling me that this was normal....(I thought he was crazy and eventually swiched doctors) About 6 months ago we noticed a brown spot on her tooth and we took her to the dentist to discover that her teeth are horrible, cavities decay...she  also has low iron...due to the tooth problem we decided to cut out all sugar and gluten...or really anyhting that could turn to sugar and stick to her teeeth....well after about 3 weeks of that her constipation for the first time was gone....I Anybody else going through same thing? Also she could eat like past once a week and still be ok...So thankful her constipation is gone but still wondering if it's celiac?

  10. My now 2 year old has been constipated since she was 8 months old. After almost a year of her Dr. telling me this is normal I decided to do my own research..... She has chronic constipation, low Iron and horrible dental problems... In the past we cut out gluten for a week with a little result... Now we are going to try to cut it out for at least 1 month and see what happens I am afraid to take her to GI dr. because I know in order to test she would need gluten in her diet. I am so afraid of making hr constipated again. Anybody else going through a similar situation.... anybody else with constipation??

I had the big C from infant-hood (back when they introduced "solids' as a wheat based cereal at 1 month old) until I had been gluten-free for almost a year. "C" isn't as uncommon as doctors seem to think.

You might want to get her tested. The best tests for kids tend to be the DGP IgA and IgG as it detects celiac disease in earlier cases better. The tTG IgA and tTG IgG work for many kids too. EMA IgA is often not detectable in kids but worth trying. Don't forget the total serum IgA, which is a control test to rule out low IgA levels (found in 5% of celiacs).  There is also the endoscopic biopsy, which can work well for diagnosing kids when blood tests fail them.

She'll need to be eating gluten for accurate tests so don't go gluten-free yet.

If all tests are negative, she could have non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI) for which there are no accepted and very reliable tests yet. To diagnose NCGI she''ll need to go gluten-free for a minimum of 3 months, 6 is better as toilet issues are often slow to change.

Best wishes and welcome to the board!

Thank You for the info...what is the difference between Celiac Disease and NCGI?
