  1. The reason I was asking about problems as a child is that I was wondering how many DQ2's or DQ8's have nuerological problems without digestive problems early on and if that's a clue that they should avoid gluten for life. I believe my childhood nuerological problems were from gluten. And if we'd known that I was a DQ2 and I'd avoided gluten, it could...
  2. Thanks Carla, Thats what I was wondering. I noticed that Rachel doesn't have the DQ2 or DQ8 gene either. I'm a DQ2, who was diagnosed a celiac earlier this year by my GI based on an EGD done 17 months post gluten-free which showed damage. It was noted as possible healed celiac. You know, it'd be just my luck that I'm a celiac who was...
  3. Is it possible that those who are gluten intolerant and find that they can eat gluten again don't have the celiac genes DQ2 or DQ8 ? It would explain why some can eat gluten again and others can't ... And goes along with what someone else said about only people with those genes getting celiac.
  4. I got glutenned the last time I went, but I called the manager and he has offered to cook my meal for me so that I can eat there again. That was May and I haven't been back yet though. I'm too sensitive to take the chance. A freind of mine eats there often, but even she says that she keeps on eye on her food, just to be safe. Actually anytime you...
  5. I don't know if it is worth going back on gluten to get tested. You could ask your GI if they would be able to diagnose you as a celiac if you are partially healed and if your labs come back normal. Some GI's will and this could save you some trouble. Marcia
  6. I've been dealing with this too. I'm hypoglyemic and so far, I've figured out that I have to eat something at least every 2 - 3 hours. And I feel best if I start the day with meat, like steak or tuna. This got really bad after being on the diet for about 6 months. I was shakey and had to eat every 30 - 90 minutes back then. This went on for about 3 months...
  7. I'm still working on this one myself. My brother has nuerological problems so I talked to him about the progress I've made and sent him a copy of Bette Hagman's Gourmet recipe book. This way he could see all the foods he could eat. He likes to cook so this was a good angle with him. And I also sent him some info off the web on celiac / gluten sensitivity...
  8. I don't have an autistic child, but I've been researching autism since learning that there are similiarities in Autism and CFS/ME and here's a few of the websites I've found that I thought were interesting. This first one is a direct link to a chart about which diets have helped Autistic children. And the second link (BodyEcology) goes into how healing...
  9. Me, too. My nuero symptoms started getting better after 7 months on the diet and my ataxia (heavy legs, arms, balance issues, etc) were gone after one year. My ADHD symptoms were better the first day, but have come back often. Now I get the nocturnal myoclonus (jerking when going into REM) and insomnia back the first nite after I have been glutenned...
  10. From the sounds of it, it could have been kidney stone related. They do tear up your digestive tract for a long time. From what I have seen at least until you have passed them. My sister had problems long after I did and my daughter had intermittent nausea and pain until it broke up and she passed it 3 weeks later. But if it were me, because...
  11. JSYK, The area of pain isn't always enough to tell you whether or not it is a kidney stone. My pain from my kidney stone was to the left of my belly button. I thought it was food poisoning. Morphine would be the right drug for a kidney stone. They gave my daughter more drugs on top of that for the pain. It's common to lose weight with stones...
  12. I don't know if kidney stones and celiac are related. I just had my first one back in May, but my family has a strong history of kidney stones. My sister had her first one in 30 years back in March. My mother, my sister, me, my daughter, my brother and at least 2 my cousins on my mother's side get them. And except for me and my daughter, we don't live...
  13. I've finally tracked mine down to peanut butter. I didn't want to admit it because I love it, but this last time was really bad. After only 2 days without eating it though, it's gone. Definitely not worth it. So, I would suggest the elimination diet too. Marcia
  14. My eyes skip around over the words too. Makes reading a real pain. I had strong noticeable twitches in each eye a few days ago when I first got glutenned, but now it's only something I can feel, but not see. They're gooey a lot right now too. This all just gets sooo annoying !!! But, it sure beats not knowing why something is happening. ...
  15. Thanks for posting this. My speech has been so bad lately I was considering getting a nueropsych eval. It doesn't help that a new friend of mine keeps cutting me off mid sentence either. I'm already self conscious, but her cutting me off only makes me feel stupid. My family doesn't cut me off any more. It's funny /sad what your friends and family learn...
  16. Jane, I'm 5' 5" and 115 lbs and I have fat now on my belly too. It's definitely fat as it feels squishy. I don't eat a lot of sweets since I am severely hypoglycemic. I thought it was menopause related ... Doll, What does severe insulin resistance due to undiagnosed celiac mean ? And why would this cause belly fat ? Thanks ... Marcia
  17. I'm still figuring all this out myself and I've been gluten-free since Sept 2005. I Know I've been glutenned if my nocturnal myoclonus (jerking when going into REM sleep) and insomnia come back. Then I go back and forth between feeling hyper and sleepy for about 4 days ... I'm not sure what happens after that. I don't have any major digestive complaints...
  18. Just my two cents. Confront your MIL in a non threatening manner on your own or you'll be setting yourself up for problems down the road. I'm sure she just doesn't get it and thinks she is doing something nice for you by throwing you a baby shower. We older women can be dense, but not impossible ... Be prepared to stand your ground on this one. Keep...
  19. Interesting ... I was diagnosed with CFS / FM back in 1990 partly because my immune system had fallen apart and I would get an URI everytime I exerted myself. Actually in the first few months after contracting CFS / FM, I would get an URI everytime I stopped the antibiotics. I also could barely walk any distance without my legs forgetting how to walk...
  20. I'm sorry, but I just had to bump this thread ... This cracks me up ... Marcia
  21. Micah, My ataxia took a full year to go away, but when it did it was like majic. One week I was using a motorized cart in the grocery stores and the next week, I just didn't need one. My legs were no longer wobley or felt heavy. And I stopped walking into things ... Google gluten ataxia and you'll see several articles by Dr. Hadj.. Notice he states...
  22. Tom, Nope. Afraid not. Unfortunately, I'm one of those that doesn't need much gluten to get a reaction. Marcia
  23. What, I had to try gluten 3 separate times before I was convinced that it was a problem for me. So, I say try it. That way you'll know for sure. And if you respond, then you'll have that negative response to look back on and help you remember why you stopped it in the first place. I'd start with a small quantity just in case a little is enough...
  24. I don't know if mashed potatoes have some sort of healing capabilities, but I find plain potatoes (boiled or baked) calm my stomach down too. No butter or sour cream, just EVOO + salt. You would probably find you'e in less pain if you stick to bland foods at this point. Baked or boiled chicken or fish, peas, asparagus, applesauce, etc. Then add other...
  25. I had ataxia and myoclonus from 1990 till 2006 that went away after I had been on the gluten-free diet for one year. And my digestive problems didn't stop me from eating gluten until 2005. At that point I had to give up most foods. I have added most foods back though and am testing dairy, soy, eggs, corn and chemicals. I consider these nuero symptoms...
