  1. Jean- I accidentally discovered "Glutenberg" (pun on Guttenberg?) brand gluten-free beers in Whole Foods. They are made by a company in Quebec and currently sold in 28 states, if you can track them down. (The company's web site can help, production is limited.) I mention this because I had my last Guinness some 18? years ago, and these folks even...
  2. Seed malt is apparently an umbrella term and it includes some seeds like barley which will be a gluten problem. That MAY be broken down in the fermentation, depending on the cultures they use. But without testing and certification? You are rolling the dice.
  3. Cyclinglady- I think the consensus of the truly scientific [read: objective and not mistaking coincidence for causality] resaerch that has only been done in the past 10? years on Celiac, is that at this point in time no one KNOWS if it is actually a CAUSE of problems, or rather, the canary in the coal mine. The allergic response to wheat may simply...
  4. I'd also be most curious to see a source cited for that. It goes against anything I've heard. Can't even find any objective actuarial stats that shower a lower life expectancy for celiacs. And a 4000x increase in colon cancer certainly should nudge that.
  5. That all makes sense. Considering that six years ago, doctors were nudging in other in the ribs and saying "Hey, have you ever heard about this celiac thing?" it very much makes sense to re-examine the issue. These days, there are even some docs with credentials, experience, and the power of rational thought. And, some of the consumer genetic tests (23&...
  6. chuck- "I'm completely asymptomatic, so a celiac diagnosis versus a celiac misdiagnosis certainly has a socio-economic impact." OK, but if you have no symptoms, why would you look for a diagnosis? And if you were misdiagnosed, does that mean a doctor said you have celiac, for no reason? The only big economic impact I could see is that if you were...
  7. I would submit that "Do you have Celiac?" is actually just an intellectual exercise for the doctor, and as a question it has little to no real meaning for the patient. Why? Because "Celiac" has no cure, and it has no unique requirements on the patient. If you have Celiac, or you have non-celiac wheat sensitivity, is there any difference in the treatment...
  8. Awol- You are right, they can't be autoclaved. There are critical parts (elastomer seals?) that would simply be destroyed by the heat. There is a similar issue going on with similar equipment from the same manufacturers, colonoscopes. Perhaps you heard about the VA "scandal" and notices sent out to patients for HIV and hepatitis testing recently because...
  9. Carol- Fifteen years ago most physicians couldn't SPELL Celiac. In the UK, US, or any other variant of the spelling. Today there is certainly a lot more awareness and a little more knowledge, so do not be afraid to question anyone and everything you are told, unless you find one of the rare few specialists who knows the matter. You have reason...
  10. Carol, they are early in research and you can expect at least five years, more likely ten, before there's anything on the market. Since "uptake" can be more complex than just leaking across the intestine, you might want to contact the researchers to see if they have/can look into this aspect while the research is still early.
  11. Chicago deep dish pie....haven't had one of those since maybe 1979 when I was last in Chicago and able to get the REAL thing. Must remember to get back there one day to do it again. Oddly enough, I just came across a brew called "Glutenberg". They say, and my gut seems to agree, that they brew about six different gluten-free beers. IPA, lager, golden...
  12. I suspect the OP is referring to GliadinX, a major sponsor of this board. (Thank you, GliadinX.) From what I've read, the pills may or may not really do anything, or they may do something but not anywhere near total conversion. There's still no solid objective study. With adults I would say "Try them, see if it helps BUT it isn't a cure, you're still...
  13. +1 on being careful with meds--any meds, for anything. Doctors are, in my experience, totally unaware of the complications of meds, and you can read those on the manufacturer's web sites to doublecheck the doctor. Or, see two docs, think it over for a week, for non-critical meds. "Keep in mind that a newly diagnosed celiac does go through a grieving...
  14. Joe- In very recent years there has been some medical discussion that refers to the digestive tract as a "third nervous system" now. This is because they've found and confirmed that the microbiome (the critters) in your gut actually can "signal" the brain, with the same serotonin uptake system that is the ajor part of anxiety and depression, and pretty...
  15. You are blaming celiac for everything that is wrong with you, and that is simply bad thinking. GERD can be caused by simply overeating late at night, or a bad sphincter at the base of the esophagus, perhaps ruined after too many years of damage from other problems like excess stomach acid and overeating. That is not something to argue over. The point...
  16. About ten years ago, a friend of mine mentioned the way that "all these nut jobs" were going crazy and blaming gluten for all their ills, when gluten-free diets became a big fad. I said sure, there was no doubt a lot of crazy people were coming out of the woods, but the great thing about that, is that it made a much bigger commercial market for gluten-free...
  17. Laura- I think your "online" doc is somewhere between "conservative" and "hooly-gooly" on some of the subjective and unproven conclusions they're making. While celiac, and non-celiac wheat allergy and a host of other very real problems all seem related to some larger issue that is not at all clearly understood, yet, there's some jumping to conclusions...
  18. Actually, you can't "check the label" on CocaCola or Pepsi. Both use "secret recipes" that are indeed trade secrets and zealously guarded. In the unlikely (but possible) event that barley or malt was a trace ingredient, it could remain unlisted as part of that trade secret. If you contacted the company to enquire about allergens, you might get an answer...
  19. Laura- You may be mistaken on that. Tinned tuna is usually available packed in water or oil--and there's no yeast in the oil, for sure. On the other hand, if you buy commercially prepared tuna salad, that is sometimes "thickened" with flour or bread crumbs as an extender, and that will cause a definite problem. Tuna in a retort pouch is safer...
  20. Given that gluten has been food in instant coffee and paprika... The only reliably safe gluten-free diet may be the Ted Nugent Diet. You know, if you didn't dig it out of the ground, and it doesn't have a face, you probably shouldn't eat it. (sigh) Big racks of stuff from GNC and other chains, not trustworthy. Established brands that say GLUTEN FREE...
  21. Gluten and anxiety can be a way more complex and subtle issue than you may realize. The only "anxiety" issues it gave me were "Will I always be in range of a toilet?" not knowing at that point exactly what kept poisoning me. However, in the last ten years there has been a lot of research into the gut flora, the microbiome, and that is now being called "the...
  22. Nothing relevant is "going on" now, except I'm trying to catch up on all things vaguely medical and get a full and correct set of information. Last time I looked into blood testing, a couple of years ago, it was done at great cost in only a few specific labs. Now, just this past year, I find that at least one lab chain (which I'm covered for) does the test...
  23. I have something that appears to be celiac, long established and without a doubt. But back 15 years ago, "see if you're better when you don't eat gluten" was just as definitive, and a lot less invasive and expensive, than going to one of the (literally) two or three docs in the US who would perform endoscopy and everything else. So I've been on a gluten...
  24. Supposedly silver/white hair is the result of hydrogen peroxide, produced in excess in the hair follicles and literally bleaching out your normal hair color. I haven't heard specifics but dietary or metabolic changes that elevate the peroxide level are supposed to be the cause of the hair going colorless as we age. Something you are doing has "fixed...
  25. Picking safe oats is like picking safe anything, really. I'm not a great oats eater so I can't recommend brands to you, but I have seen some that state on the packaging that they are grown in an exclusive field--no crop rotations, so no wheat contamination possible in the crops. And then processed in a gluten-free facilty, where NO wheat products are handled...
