  1. When I got the sudden bad stomach/digestion flare up last year (before I knew I had gluten sensitivity) I was having bad under arm odor.  It was driving my crazy, and I assumed it was related to my health issues. I was really sick with a fever for a year and a half and so on.  Once I stopped eating gluten, I have noticed the BO has greatly improved.  This past week I accidentally got glutened somehow, my stomach issues are all flared up and I feel horribly sick, and go figure, yes, the BO has returned.  So I do think there is a definite connection for me.  Perhaps for you too.

On another note, when I take a lot of vitamins, especially iron, I also have a stronger BO, although it's a little different than the sick/glutned BO.  Also when I take a strong B complex, I tend to smell it in my BO a little.  But the worst, strongest smell is when I am sick with gluten.  I also seem to smell my urine more strongly when I am dealing with gluten symptoms.  I can smell the foods I recently ate. It annoys me, but once I heal from the gluten, it gets better.  It is embarrassing to talk about, but it is nice we can share things here on this site. Some symptoms doctors don't even seem to believe or understand, or they act like they never heard that before.  So this message board is so helpful to share with people who actually are experiencing the disease/sensitivity.  It could take you a few months to feel better and notice the BO get better too, but I bet you will notice the smell gets much better, even back to normal.

  2. I was just going to ask what people do when they accidentally get glutened, to help the pain and discomfort while waiting it out, and I saw this thread, which probably has the same answers I was looking for.  Anyone know if Pepto has corn or soy product?  I hate pepto. The few times I took it when I was younger, I'd always throw up after.  Not sure if it's the medicine or the flavor.  So I hesitate trying it.  But I am in pain, and have so much to do this week, it is hard to be suffering with this right now.

When you are recovering from being glutened, can some "safe" foods still bother you?  I hardly ate for a few days, and then was having mostly eggs. Those seem to be the most gentle on my stomach.  But I was starting to get really hungry and weak, so last night had a little steak.  That, apparently, was a big mistake.  Yet in the past being gluten-free, steak was an okay food for me.  Do you think it's just too harsh while I am healing from this accidental gluten issue?

Meanwhile, I have no idea how I got glutened.  All I can think of is that it is time to get separate pans and utensils for myself.  I have been washing things super good, like three times if it was used for gluten (once with a gluten-used sponge, once with my hands, once with another sponge), and so far, the past year, that has worked fine.  But all I can think is I somehow didn't wash well enough this time and got cross contamination?  I have no idea. So, I have learned my lesson. I will have to just spend the money and find a space to store gluten-free pans and utensils from now on. My other thought was our grill.  We had a cookout and one person brought hot dogs that had cheese in them.  I have no idea if there was any gluten in them or not.  I know many burgers I've looked at that have flavors in them, like onions, or cheese, often have gluten fillers in them too.  But we have cooked on the grill since then, and I was okay.  My husband cleans it off really well. I asked him from now on if someone brings a food with gluten, use tin foil on the grill, or we need to tell people, sorry, nope, can't do it.  I don't think some people realize how painfully sick we get.  I don't have celiac, just the sensitivity, and from what I understand, with celiac it's even more dangerous for your health to get cross contamination.  But oh, those symptoms, so much suffering! I am having trouble even sleeping at night with it.  I forgot how awful it had been before getting the diagnose and going gluten-free.

Anyone ever feel heavy with their breathing when they get the stomach distention and it causes your ribs to ache from the pressure, and your upper back to ache on and off?  I had a lung CT scan, a chest x-ray, and an EKG in January, and it all looked fine.  But it seems when I get the really bad gluten symptoms or have corn or soy product and get the stomach distention, my chest feels a little like when I get bronchitis.  Although allergies are really bad right now too, and I get really congested, and I think that is adding to it too.  Right now I could just scream, lol.

What other soft foods do you all eat when recovering from a cross contamination incident?  I am really getting sick of eggs, even though I used to love them. I had just gotten a Stoneyfield yogurt to try last week (before I got accidentally glutened) at the store that is gluten free, but it has "natural ingredients" and I was going to try it to see if it bothered me or not.  I'd love to be able to have yogurt.  But now since this gluten flare up, I don't dare try it while in the middle of being so bothered right now.  It is hard when you can't have gluten. When so sick, my instinct is to have tea and toast or crackers.  I can't even have jello (I think that has corn in it?).  What do you eat when recovering until you stomach can handle more?

I can't take Advil since I am allergic to ibruprophen.  Tylenlol never helps me at all, plus since I having gluten issues, it gives me a stomach ache (not sure why, maybe it has corn or soy in it).  I can take aspirin, but have not looked into a brand that is gluten, corn, and soy-free yet.  Sort of at wit's end today. I feel inflammation, like even up my esophagus and besides stomach issues, feel weak and just generally sick all over.  I just spent weeks researching prescription meds to get ones with no corn or soy (or gluten).  And before that, spent a while searching for vitamin supplements.  So I had taken a break before looking into aspirin (and then after that, I'll look into sinus and allergy meds).  It gets exhausting doing all this research.

So, any other soft, gentle food suggestions?  What brands of tea do you use? I have seen some herbal teas that have "natural flavor" in the ingredients, and I know some of those can be iffy to us all here.

Well I emailed them they use corn in other chips, with your corn issues....it is probably related to that and cross contamination.....OR you have issues with carbs? To plain potatoes bother you?

Potatoes seem okay with me. I also remembered that the day I ate a few Kettle chips, I also tried one seaweed chip my daughter was eating.  It said gluten-free on the package and looked like dried out, paper-thin seaweed, so I ate one and then realized, I still should see the ingredients.  Come to find out there was canola oil in them.  I have questioned canola oil before and how it makes me feel, so now I am not sure if it was the Kettle chips or that seaweed chip.  I need to remember not to try more than one new thing within days of each other.  But maybe there is some corn cross contamination from the Kettle chips?  Maybe I will try another Kettle chip sometime, I don't know.  The stomach ache was very short, like about an hour or two, and then went away. But I only ate 2 of the Kettle chips and one of the seaweed chips.  Maybe that was why the stomach ache was gone soon.  Also, I ate dinner and that almost seemed to help my stomach feel better.  Weird. I wasn't going to eat but even though I had the stomach ache, I actually felt hungry too though.  Eating some more food seemed to help, for some reason.

  4. I had been mentioning Kettle brand to my daughter before seeing they might bother some people.  So my daughter brought me home a bag today. It says gluten-free on the bag, and the only ingredients in this one was potatoes, avocado oil, and himalayan salt.  So I just ate two.  Now about an hour or so later I have bad bloat.  The stomach distention sort of bloat.  I am not certain it was the potato chips, but could very well be.  But I wonder why if it states gluten-free on the bag, and it was plain, not flavored, and only three seemingly safe ingredients.  Weird.

  5. That is a bummer about the Kettle chips. I had them on my grocery list to check for this week.  Oh, that corn!  It has to go and show up in so much. When I first found out I couldn't eat gluten I was still thinking, I can eat nacho chips, taco shells, popcorn!  Oh well. It takes some getting used to.  Right now I'd love a lemonade and bowl of popcorn.  It is weird though. It seems some items with a corn ingredient don't tend to bother me much, yet other items seem to give me that stomach distention.  Still working on it all, but just seems better to avoid all corn. Still working on some prescription meds though. Oh, and the frozen turkey burgers I had been getting which were very nice and convenient and not overly expensive seem to maybe be discontinued, at least at the store i was getting them.  It did help me to try something else, which I like the taste even better, but a little pricier.  But this is all still a work in process, and it seems we just need to roll with changes that come up. Sure keeps us on our toes, that's for sure. This message board and everyone sharing is such a blessing!

  6. Thanks, that sounds like a great idea. I just looked at their site and apparently there are a few stores near me that are suppose to sell the Protes chips, although not sure how accurate it is since one store listed has been out of business for a few years.  I hope some of the other stores still carry them. One store it mentioned was CVS, go figure.

There is a company called Nutcrumbs that makes grain free breading crumbs from nuts, you can also use Protes Chips and pulse in a food processor.....seriously vegan nacho cheddar Doritos like breading, the coconut one on sea food, the BBQ on chicken....the chili and lime on a mexican styled fried steak.....I think I did a recipe post on my methods of breading with all of these .

Primal Kitchen (https://www.primalkitchen.com/collections/ketchup-mustard/products/organic-unsweetened-ketchup) are corn free ketchup Hell they do not even use grain based vinegar. Primal Kitchen even makes great Mayo, mustard, dressings (Only Ranch I can eat and not vomit), etc. As a Paleo based company they will not use any grain based ingredients including corn.

Um Sir Kingstons is debatable I got this from them on Email About their Ketchup, Mustard, and Secret Sauce.
    Hello,

I apologize I just checked with our R & D team and all 3 products are gluten and dairy free. Our citric acid is derived from cane sugar.
For xanthan gum, corn is used as a substrate during the production of xanthan gum, however, there is no corn in the end xanthan gum.
Vinegar across all 3 of these products is derived from sugar cane and corn.

If you need anything else please just let us know.

    Thanks,
    Tessa

Thank you so much for the info on Primal Kitchen.  I just checked their website it it says there are a few stores in my town that sell it.  I will have to go check it out.  I have not tried Sir Kingston yet.  I was wanting to at some point.  I made a honey mustard sauce from a spicy mustard from one store (a brand called Full Circle - that is the same brand of ketchup I tried too, which is good, just sweeter than I prefer).  I will have to try the Primal Kitchen.  I miss sauces, lol!  We made chicken tenders by coating in crushed Rice Chex, baked them (sprayed with olive oil), and they were good.  I also tried making onion rings with coconut flour and rice flour on them.  They didn't stay crisp for long, but then again, it was humid, so not sure if it was the flour or the weather.  Still, it was a nice sort of fast food/ordering out type of dinner that I haven't had in almost two years.  I did splurge and have a coke with it too.  I had some bloat, but nothing bad.  No stomach distention.  I won't splurge like that often though.  Once I eat it, I am good for a long time.  But I was thinking the sauces, like even making the honey mustard, I could use that in cooking plain chicken or putting on a chicken or turkey burger to give some variety from my usual tomato and lettuce or ketchup.

The chips I personally use are Protes and they use sunflower oil. I cater with Kettle Brand chips and they have ones cooked in avocado oil and almond oil ones that I keep buying. Had a nice smoked salt one that people loved.

Thanks for sharing those brands. I wonder if they sell Kettle brand in the stores?  I wonder if that was the one I got, but forgot what oil it was.  I thought it was a black bag though, but lately there is so much I look into with no gluten, soy, or corn, it starts to get hard to remember. I had started bookmarking things that worked for me, but then when my computer got a virus, I lost everything saved in it. So, starting all over again.

2 reasons, 1 it insures they do not dry too much out, 2. when  they do cook it helps sort of steam cook in the inside giving that "puffed" soft texture inside and the oil gives it a fried crisp outside. If you cook on a wire rack placed on top of a cookie sheet it almost air fries them. Bonus points if you have a convection oven

Thanks for the recipe.  I have not tried it with sweet potato, but sounds good.  And I've never tried soaking them in water.  I did hear that before but thought it was just for the fried method. I'll have to try that sometime even for the baked method. I am happy I even found a ketchup with no corn or soy in it. It is a bit too sweet, but still, it's ketchup.

  10. I can't seem to find frozen fries that are not fried in soy or vegetable oil, so I have not had any luck with any so far. I've made some baked fries at home which is not quite the same, but better than nothing.  And I think Five Guys uses peanut oil for theirs, I think...so if you have one near you, you could call and ask them.  I had a bunless burger there last fall and I ate the fries and I think I was okay, but I can't totally remember now.

  11. I tried a few different chips and always got a stomach ache and sometimes bloat. But for me, I think I realized it's the oil they use. Some use canola and some use soy, or even if it says vegetable oil, that is soy.  And come to find out, soy seems to bother me.  I found one bag that I believe used olive oil, and I have been trying to find it again, but can't remember the name or what the bag looked like. So I keep searching.

Ciroc is a grape base, Tito is a corn base with actual gluten-free certifications, and there was a Russian imported potato vodka.......damn I miss back before diagnosis I used to use this pinnacle whipped vodka (wheat based vodka) in a orange soda...you get get 2-6 shots in a glass and hardly notice the alcohol. I use sparkling orange water or zevia now, bit of splenda zero, and drops of orange creamsicle, or marshmallow from capella flavors in drinks...sometimes some rum extract.....damn UC will not let me drink lol.

UC sounds very limiting in diet.  I don't dare drink right now. I never used to drink much, but when you feel you can't, it sure is a bummer. I miss being able to take a sip of my husband's cold beer, now no more beer at all with gluten issues.  I do like rum so if I can start to have a drink here or there, at least there is that.  I used to like sour mixes too, but I bet those have gluten or something nasty in them.  Are brandy's safe? I could probably make up my own sour mix, although I am wondering if I can ever eat powdered sugar again. I haven't read ingredient labels but read some article saying it usually has corn starch in it. It's weird though, that my stomach started feeling much better at a point where I was still eating some things with soy and corn in them.  But I don't know, I then started having problems again, so I really don't know. I keep avoiding the inevitable to go on a very strict diet and then slowly add things back in.  I feel such brain fog lately.  Things have been so busy, and I seem to get one more health issue after another.  Too much stress. But I know I need to figure out a meal plan for a week that is very bland and avoiding all these certain ingredients, and then slowly try out one ingredient at a time.  It just upsets me because I don't know if any prescriptions or supplements are also causing problems, and not sure how I can stop taking those.  So, I procrastinate. Bad me. I'm going to have to just do it though. And figure out what in the world I can actually eat for a weekly meal plan. Also needing to keep cholesterol and fat low too.

I drink and cook with khalua

Sounds good.  My family always did the Khalua and milk on holidays. I found it is amazing pouring into a small glass and adding cream on top, that floats on top, and you sip it, but too many fat and calories to do that often, but what a treat.  I only cooked with it once. We used to have a Khalua little cookbook and I tried the glazed nuts one Christmas. They were good. Do you use it in desserts or marinades or whatnot?

This wheat paste stuff is just a myth . The wines you like aren’t even made in barrels.  The very few expensive ones that might use a flour paste do not get it into the wine.  That would mess up the wine!

Thanks for that info.  So far I had messaged Barefoot Wines and they said their beverages are gluten-free.  I love their pink champagne for special occasions.  So basically most wines should be safe and gluten-free?

Went to the link and saw this

" All flavors have zero sugar, 1 gram of carbs, 90 calories and are crafted to remove gluten."

I avoid anything with the line I bolded.

In summer on the rare times I drink I like a good potao vodka with lemonaide or cranberry juice, clear rum and coke, or a crisp Woodchuck cider.  Kahlua and milk or in hot chocolate is nice when it's cold outside.

I was wondering if Kahlua was okay. This is good to know.  Right now with my blood pressure and pulse issues, I am avoiding alcohol, but I hope to eventually be able to take a little drink once in a while again. And have always wanted to try a mojito and am glad we can also have rum.  Any particular brands of vodka you use that you know are safe?

I agree with Karen (she knows her stuff), but why even buy processed junk?  Go for some traditional cream and milk!  It is REAL!

That's true. I just missed some flavored coffees though and thought it'd be nice to find something with some flavor. I have not tried them yet though because I can't find a single store in my town that sells the new Artisan Cafe ones. I did see some made with coconut milk or almond milk that I might try. And these new Artisan Cafe ones seem like they are natural.  Here is the ingredients for the caramel flavor-Cream, Sugar, Milk, Buttermilk, and Less Than 2% of Natural Flavor, Himalayan Pink Salt, Gellan Gum.

So I was curious about the gellan gum.  Maybe that bothers some people?

  17. I have no idea.  I tried looking online too.  I did see this, a Walmart page that is suppose to be gluten-free.  I was excited at first, but then realize most seem to have corn in them so I can't eat them. But other people here might find some use from this link below. I do not see the Sazon on here though, so either Walmart doesn't carry it, or it's perhaps not gluten-free after all?  I don't know.  I hope you can find a better, definitive answer.

  18. I have no idea.  I was going to suggest looking for the phone number on the bottle to call them, but now see from your post that you've tried that, and online.  That must be getting very frustrating.  It seems if there is any allergy in it, being something used to prep for medical testing, it should list it on the bottle, like how some products will say at the end of ingredients list, "Contains milk" or soy, wheat, nuts, etc.  But who knows.  I hope you can find an answer. I wonder if you can ask your dr or nurse if they have any other celiac patients who have had the colonoscopy and been okay drinking that prep stuff?  Sure, it'd be a little research for them, but it is important.  Then when they find out, they can know for sure and let all their future patients know also.  Good luck, and I hope you are able to get some answers to help you feel better soon. It sure does get exhausting feeling so cruddy. Hang in there.

  19. I got an email reply back and yes, the new Artisan Cafe creamers are gluten free and soy free also. This was their reply:

"We are pleased to let you know that all three of the Coffee-mate® Artisan Cafe Creamer flavors are labeled as Gluten Free.
We consider "gluten free" to mean that no gluten ingredients are in the product, whether directly added, or potentially present due to cross-contact. In other words, if a product label has an allergen advisory statement, such as "may contain wheat", we do not consider that product to be gluten free. We recommend to always check the label for the most current information before purchasing and/or consuming a product.
These also do not contain Soy. We always label the eight major food allergens on our package by their common name. Again! We recommend to always check the label for the most current information before purchasing and/or consuming a product.
Corn is not in the ingredients list but it could be in the Natural Flavor. The ingredients in Natural Flavors are proprietary.
There is a money saving coupon link below. Please respond to this email with your postal mailing address and we will mail you coupons also.
    Have a great day!

There was no money-saving link at the bottom of the email that I could find, but apparently if you send them your address they will mail you coupons.

  20. Hi there.  I was wondering if anyone has eaten products with gellan gum in them?  I looked it up and it sounds like it would be safe for gluten-free eating?  I try to avoid corn products (including xantham gum) and soy as much as I can (I should probably stop eating that stuff all together), and so I was happy to see the new Artisan Cafe flavored coffee creamers from Coffee Mate don't seem to have any corn or soy ingredients. I just emailed them to double check they are gluten-free, which I am pretty sure they are, but figured I'd better double check since it's a new product.  I was just curious as to how anyone here has reacted to eating items with gellan gum in them?  Did it bother you at all?  It sounds like it'd be a great ingredient to replace xanthan gum and corn starches. It'd be nice to see more companies try using it. But not sure if it bothers anyone with gluten and other food sensitivities?

I do not have a can handy.  What does the label say?  You always want to check the label on any packaged product  every single time.  If you want to know if I have consumed it and avoided a celiac flare-up, then the answer is a sound YES!   I use it in my no-bake lemon jello cheesecake from the 1960’s when Jello was all the rage.

That lemon jello recipe sounds good.  I was wondering about jello too, if they are gluten free.

  22. Is anyone sure about if Carnation Evaporated Milk is gluten free?  I saw some websites and lists that mentioned just some Carnation being gluten free, like some of the light evaporated milks, etc.  but those lists did not include the plain, regular evaporated milk.  But then I saw a list that said that all carnation milks are gluten free.  I was just wondering if anyone uses it (the plain, regular one, not the light or extra creamy or other versions of it) and are okay with it?
