  1. We go to Good and Plenty in Lancaster! Yum! It is a family style resturant where you sit with other folks and dine family style. The menu changes daily so I would call 1st to ensure there is something there he can have and likes. We just ate there about two weeks ago and DD had ham, corn and mashed potatoes with ice cream for dessert. They do make things like fried chicken (which is usually served daily) but it is all served on seperate platters. The meatloaf and hamloaf....a no go. I asked wishfully thinking! LOL! But they often serve a safe meat like ham or roastbeef, etc along with the mashed potatos and several veggies. And they are very accomidating. We love it there.

On rt 30 there is a Bob Evans.....the hotdogs are safe, mashed potatoes and the potato crusted fish is to dye for! The sausage is ok too and they serve ham too. If you go in and ask for the allergy list, they will provide a little 3 ring binder that has all the foods and ingred. listed.

There is also a Texas Roadside on rt 30. (steak house)

And a nice diner right across the street from Dutch Wonderland that we often stop at. The are very helpful there too.

These are all on or near rt. 30. That isn't that far from Bird In Hand. Hershey, I cannot remember where we stopped. Some little hole in the wall sports diner. LOL!

I haven't been to Bird in Hand in ages so I am not much help there. Sorry.

  2. It is probably too late for the OP....Hope you have a great trip.... But I wanted to post for those reading....

I was going to take the train for vacation. I called Amtrak and did not have a positive response. I was told that they do not provide gluten-free foods. That the food is premade and packaged to go. They do have other special diet menus like kosher and dairy free, etc but they do not have a gluten-free one. They will not heat food either and there is no way for you to do so on your own. When I asked how my DD would eat on a 20 hour trip I was put on hold, spoke with several people and was, in the end, told that it is up to the individual chef on that train. That menus change per train/chef. I would have to buy my ticket and then call to try and talk with the chef of that train no earlier than the week prior. Since there was no guarentee of food for her, I didn't want to purchase tickets and then get stuck. So we flew. I was very disappointed. It wasn't a 2 hour trip. It was 20 hours and I would have no guarentee that my DD would be able to eat. I was told that they will try their best to provide food that is ok but since it is premade up, a hamburger will come with a bun and a breakfast with toast, etc. Maybe they would have done something once I spoke with the chef but I couldn't chance it. That is a lot of money and a long trip to not be 100% sure. I was rather disappointed in Amtrak. Their site offers such a wonderful variety of special diet menus. But it seems if you don't fit the mold......

  3. We are going the end of August and the beginning of Sept and I was a nervous wreck! I read and read and read! LOL! What we are doing....

*I am going to send down to our hotel some gluten-free safe foods. This will arrive and be waiting for us at the hotel and I plan on stuffing it with gluten-free chicken nuggets, muffins, snack bars, cereal, cookies, etc.

*Then I rented a small microwave from a place down there so we can heat up items in the room for her since most of her things need to be kept cold and the resturants will not heat anything. This too will be waiting for us at the resort and when we are done we leave it in baggage and they will pick it up. Awesome! (site posted below)

*Then I did advanced reservations at as many resturants and buffets as I could get that got good reviews. And then researched counter services that will offer SOMETHING that both Delaney can have and my picky 14 yr. old will not bulk at either! LOL! At reservations I notified them we are dealing with an "allergy" and it was noted to what in my reservations. This will give the chefs head notice and they will call me prior to each reservation to see what she likes and can have. The buffets they will take you down each row and show you and talk with you on what is there that is ok. And they will make gluten-free waffles!!! Sit down resturants will be better than the counter services

  4. Thanks guys! You are awesome!

    *Get drs note

    *Use ice packs

*Act like you know what you are doing!

GREAT! That was a big help. Now to decide to check it or send it FedX.

Oh and I just bought the best stroller! So excited. It folds like an umbrella but is has a bit more bang to it. AND it was on sale! Even better! LOL!

There is a WHole Foods down there but I am not sure how close it is to Disney. I don't know the area at all. We are doing the magic express so we won't have access to a car. So I am not so sure how easy that will be to get to there.

  5. Thanks guys! That helped relieve my mind some. So, 1st step is to get a dr note and make copies. I was going to use a small soft shell cooler. That would be ok?

And Karen, when you sent your food through check in, did you use icepacks in that? I was debaiting if I should just do icepacks or if I should look into dry ice. And if I should send it down via FedX over night or just check it in with us.

  6. We are heading to Disney in August and I THINK I have mastered the dining at the resort but I am not sure how to handle the airport. With all the new regulations I am might need some ideas and help! This is for my two year old. Might I point out she is a toddler. With toddler likes and dislikes! LOL! So to look for fruit or veggies is not going to cut it. So I wanted to bring some food on the plane/to the airport with us and also down to FL. We decided to try shipping some down to the resort ahead of time and we reserved a rental for a micro so I can throw in some toddler foods or gluten-free chicken nuggets as needed. But how do I get cold food through the airport without an icepack? I looked online at their regulations and it says it will be allowed for medications or medical reasons. Would they put "allergies" in as medical? And if not, any suggestions on how to keep it cold otherwise and is it possible to find gluten-free kid friendly foods once in the airport??

Anyone want to share experiences or ideas??

  7. I just got an email that said they would try and sub. if possible.

We are constantly testing new menus and vendors do substitute items. Always request to see the ingredient label to be sure.
But I am not so sure I will be holding my breath to see if Delaney gets gluten-free pancakes for breakfast at the CS resturant! :( I was told however to call the hotel a week prior to see IF they might be able to accomidate.

Does anyone know if the hotdogs are ok???

  9. I just came on here to ask the same questions! LOL!

I found this link which I thought was great....

    Open Original Shared Link

It gives a real account of resturants and places to go or not to go. I am taking notes! ;)

I was looking into the Caribbean resort too. I have a two year old and want to be able to take some time to relax and not just crash the gates all day. And I didn't like the more fast food resturant that was offered at the value resorts. I would rather have a sit down. That link above also has info in it about the resorts and WONDERFUL pictures of them too!

  10. I went this weekend to a local convience store in my area and asked for a bunless hotdog for my DD. The girl behind the counter just looked at me like I was crazy. I explained she had an allergy and couldn't have the bun. So the girl, still looking at me like I was talking another language, walked around the counter to the hotdog case and took out a hotdog with bun, opened it and plopped the hotdog in the container then looked up at me with bun in one hand and the hotdog and container in the other with exactly this look  . Ummmm...... no! <_< I could have done that! I need one where the bun is not touching the hotdog. The manager finally got me one!

I think the best one, this is not a server but my DD's ped., asks me about my DD's diet recently. I told him she is wheat free. He turns around in awe and says "No wheat?". Me-"Nope" Dr-"None? Really?!" Me-"Nooooooo. None" Dr-"Really? Not even a little?" OMG NO........SHE GETS NONE!

  11. We had a similar story just without the celiac testing. My Dd was 8-9 months old when I noticed something wasn't right. I knew it was related to items with wheat in it but wasnt' sure if it was wheat or something else. I would give her crackers, get a reaction, take her off and clear up. I did this cycle for 4 months with dr. visits inbetween. My final frustration was right after Christmas when my DD started with hives. I KNEW it was not in my mind or something to write off and so I called the dr and demanded a referral. This took us to an allergist. We 1st did a RAST test and got neg. all the way. Then we did a SPT and got neg. It was two days later that I noticed a welt in the area where #7 was tested for the SPT....wheat. She did not have immediate reactions but rather delayed. However in my testing and research I found many similar symptoms in my two other children. They too had problems over the years but were never clearly diagnosed as my youngest was as her symptoms were just so clear something was wrong and to what. Starting to piece together symptoms, diagnoses and family history I do not believe we are Celiac free. Something isn't right and I know it. Thing is my youngest DD is now gluten free and cannot be tested. But we are getting ready to test my middle DD now. #1 I think you have to follow your gut. Mothers know. #2 As some have mentioned you child has probably not been on enough wheat to cause any major damage. I know from our on again and off again cycle and my DD being so young that a biop. would show really nothing. Point is she could just be allergic which is what you wanted to know. Or it could be more. Yes her symptoms are very similar to Celiac.

Why not have you and DH tested too since your child is gluten-free?

  12. My DD has had the following symptoms for almost two weeks. I have already taken her to the dr last week thinking it might have been her ears and except for the red throat she was fine but we are still dealing with the symptoms. Do you think she might be getting gluten from somewhere or do you think she might be just sick still?

*Symptoms started almost 2 weeks ago

*Crying, screaming and fussing at night.

    *Night wakings/restless sleeping

*Won't take bottle on occasions when she is crying and screaming (this is REALLY odd for her)

*Very loose/sometimes jelly like poop with "chunks" or light colored/tan BM's

*Red throat with sores (But no other sick symptoms like fever, etc)

*Loss of or very little wanting to eat.

And no she has all her teeth! ;) What do you think? I have already had her to the dr and he pretty much gave her a thumbs up except for the red throat. But two weeks is a bit long for all this to continue. Do you think she might be getting gluten?? Or should I make another trip to the dr?

  13. Hi Jay!!! It is Kimberly aka Kimberlee!! Nice to see you on the board! :D

We are on the allergic wagon too with Wheat, oats, peanuts, eggs, fish and strawberries. She isn't allergic to it all...thank GOD. We are not giving big no-no's to be safe. Until she is 2-3 years anyway. She is allergic to the wheat and oats though.

Izak's Mom- you need to post your recipe.

Someone asked (sorry can't remember who) what texture she doesn't like....seems it is more anything cold, wet and slimmy. Which mostly covers all fruits. LOL! She will eat a few veggies with no butter, etc. And a few meats but is happy with anything like sausage, hotdogs, etc. She actually ate ham the other day. I about passed out where I sat! Between the limits and those that she adds on, it makes mommy's life a bit frustrating! She cannot live on hotdogs and muffins alone! Ok maybe she can but it isn't good! <_<

  14. Well at least I know I am not alone. Sometimes I just wonder if it is from a virus or another food allergy or if she got into something or was it that cracker, etc. Her current fav. place to search for food is the trach can in the kitchen! She keeps me on my toes. I try my best to restrict her but I also have a family daycare in home and that too keeps me busy with her around. But 2-5 days seems to be her too. Thanks!

  15. Thanks for the replies. I had a feeling I was at a dead end. <_< Thing is that I HATE to cook so it is nice to have those ready made things when we are on the go and I can just grab and run. Other problem I have is that she won't touch certain foods like pasta or fresh fruit and she is on an allergy restricted diet...no fish, shellfish, eggs, peanuts, etc. till she is about 2-3. So it really limits me. Sometimes I just want to scream!!!

Delaney is 16 months and has all her teeth. Problem is that she has a texture problem. Hence the no fruit and such. When she was on all baby food it was great. But once she got past the stage 2's my life became hard. :( Oddly she is on the typical toddler diet...all carbs. Funny when you think about it! So her favs are muffins, pancakes, cereal and such. I try and throw in tricks like fruit in the muffins, dried Gerber fruit, etc. Just so frustrating!!!

  16. Is there such a thing as gluten free/wheat free baby food? I have hit the toddler stage and it is nice to be able to have handy a few foods for on the go like the Gerber Grads, etc. But everything they make is like 90% pasta!! Or has wheat starch in it. I am getting so frustrated! Can I tell you how excited I get when I am in the babyfood isle and find something she can eat??!! I must look like a nut!

Last week I came in after a mega baby food sale and couldn't find much of anything for her. So I decided to head to the soup isle in hopes of finding something there. HA HA HA HA HA! What a joke! What the heck do they need to put wheat starch in chicken, rice and broth for!!!????? I was ready to just sit down and cry!

Is there ANY baby/toddler food out there that is gluten/wheat free???? Another brand besides Gerber/Beechnut perhaps?

  17. does your child start to get back to normal? My daughter is 16 months and does the typical geting into things , picking up her sisters food, finding things on the floor, etc. And we have had a few bouts over the last few weeks of her getting ahold of things she shouldn't. Each time I notice she won't eat for several days and we battle the poo and stuff. Sometimes it only takes 3-4 days and she is back up and running but sometimes it can takes much longer. How long does it take for your child to start feeling better?
