  1. Celiac.com 03/05/2019 - The mechanics of how celiac disease and gluten-related disorders develop is still poorly understood. In order to shed light on the subject, a team of researchers recently conducted a systematic review of the current epidemiological knowledge of gluten-related disorders. They focused on variations in reported cases and rates of gluten-related disorders in the Asia-Pacific region. The research team included Sara Ashtari, Mohamad Amin Pourhoseingholi, Kamran Rostami, Hamid Asadzadeh Aghdaei, Mohammad Rostami-Nejad, Luca Busani, Mostafa Rezaei Tavirani, and Mohammad Reza Zali. For their reviews, the team searched Medline, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane database for material published from January 1991 to January 2018. They searched the following MeSH terms and keywords: celiac disease, wheat allergy, non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten ataxia and the prevalence studies. Each article was cross-referenced with “Asia-Pacific region” and countries in this region such as Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and others. They found a total of 66 suitable studies that chronicled rates of gluten-related disorders in the Asia-Pacific region. They found celiac disease rates of 0.32%-1.41% in healthy children, and 0.05%-1.22% in the adult population, while rates in the high risk population ran as high as 11.8%. Earlier studies have shown few cases of dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten ataxia. Interestingly, even though wheat allergy is uncommon in most Asian-Pacific countries, it’s the most common cause of anaphylaxis. This review emphasizes how little good information we have, and how much we need more and better epidemiological studies to reveal the origins and development of gluten-related disorders, and to better measure their effects upon health care delivery. 2. Hello, My fiance and I are going to Singapore for our honeymoon next year and I was wondering if anyone knew any cafes/restaurants etc that have gluten-free dishes? We previously went two years ago and enjoyed ourselves so much that we definitely wanted to go back our our honeymoon. Catch is I got diagnosed as being gluten intolerant a few months ago, negative for Coeliac though. If I eat gluten I have bad nausea, bloating, diarrhea etc. Not pretty for a honeymoon :-) I am more than happy to eat fruit at breakfast and make do with steamed rice at dinner etc but if anyone has any ideas on anywhere I can safely eat that would be much appreciated. I don't care how much it costs! Also is it possible for me to bring packaged gluten-free food into Singapore from Australia? I am not sure on the rules. Thank you!!
  3. I'm living in Singapore and currently a College Student. Not an officially diagnosed Celiac but food intolerance tests shows that I'm intolerant to gluten, dairy and many more. Being gluten free in Singapore have not been easy as it's something fairly uncommon in Asia, but some limited choices are still available. However, I've been contemplating for awhile now whether to participate in a 6-month Exchange program at a University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The lack of awareness of multiple food intolerance in Taiwan have been something that I've been worrying about. My friends are going, but food becomes my major concern as I've heard that eating out is cheaper. Does anyone have any experiences being gluten free in Taiwan? Appreciate a reply, thanks:)
  4. Hi, I'm heading to Hong Kong, the Philippines (Manila, Bacolod, and Boracay), and Japan (Fukuoka) for about 3 weeks in April. I was wondering if anyone has traveled to one or all of these locations while gluten-free and could offer some advice/suggestions? I will be at a wedding in Bacolod (and theoretically the food is taken care of), and I am staying with bi-lingual family members in both Hong Kong and Japan. I traveled to Asia just after diagnosis unsuccessfully, and I'm getting more and more nervous as my trip nears. I prefer not to eat-in for every meal (I will if I have to), so I'd really appreciate any advice on eating out/supermarkets/food in general. Thanks in advance! Rebecca
  5. Hi all, After a recent hospitalization and confirmed malnourishment, doctors have suggested that I may have celiacs. We originally thought it was crohns, but a colonoscopy showed that my large intestine is looking healthy enough, although a cat scan showed some inflammation in the small intestine. My sister and aunite are both celiacs and I have suffered from celiacs symptoms for about 10 years. Anyway, I live in Japan and can't get the proper testing done until I go home in about a month. So, I was wondering if any celiacs living in Asia could give me some advice about living with the disease over here. Any suggestions on diet or lifestyle would be great. Thank you
