Celiac.com 12/27/2024 - Country music star Luke Combs, widely admired for his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics, recently revealed a significant lifestyle change that has impacted both his mental and physical health. At 34 years old, Combs has taken steps to prioritize his well-being, a decision inspired by his desire to be a better father to his two young sons. A Surprising Change Luke Combs shocked fans with what he called "the least country thing" he's ever done: adopting a gluten-free lifestyle. The decision followed a period of heightened anxiety and obsessive-compulsive tendencies that began interfering with his daily life. These mental health challenges prompted Combs to delve deeper into understanding the root causes of his struggles. During his search for answers, Combs consulted a doctor in Nashville and underwent a food sensitivity test. The results revealed a significant gluten sensitivity, prompting him to eliminate the protein from his diet. Although Combs initially made this change to address his mental health, he was surprised by the broader impact it had on his overall well-being. Mental Health Transformation Since removing gluten from his diet, Combs reports experiencing profound mental clarity and reduced symptoms of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behavior. "Ever since eliminating [gluten], it’s changed my life mentally," Combs shared. His story aligns with growing evidence suggesting that gluten sensitivity can exacerbate mental health issues in some individuals, though such outcomes may vary widely. This discovery was life-altering for Combs, as he had long struggled with mental health challenges that, at times, felt debilitating. Taking control of his diet proved to be a critical step in regaining balance and finding relief. A Positive Physical Side Effect Interestingly, Combs also noted a physical transformation as a result of his dietary shift, though weight loss was not his original intention. By focusing on his mental health and making sustainable changes, he inadvertently reaped benefits for his physical health as well. This unintended outcome has further motivated Combs to continue his wellness journey. Inspired by Fatherhood At the heart of Combs’ decision to prioritize his health are his two sons, 2-year-old Tex and 1-year-old Beau. Reflecting on his role as a father, Combs expressed his commitment to being present and healthy for his children. “Longevity is the goal,” he said. "Every day you get to spend with those guys is really fun and tough, and you need to be your best self to take care of them the way that you feel like they deserve." Balancing fatherhood and a demanding career is no small feat, but Combs is determined to rise to the challenge. For him, the effort to improve his mental and physical health is a deeply personal and ongoing process. Career Highlights and Dedication to Family In the midst of his personal transformation, Combs is also celebrating professional success. His latest album, Fathers & Sons, has earned multiple nominations at the 2024 Country Music Association Awards, including Album of the Year. Dedicated to his two boys, the album holds a special place in his heart, symbolizing both his love for them and his passion for music. “To be able to have something like that for them… and have it be recognized is always nice,” Combs said, expressing gratitude for the acknowledgment of his work. A Journey of Resilience Combs’ journey serves as a reminder that health is a multifaceted and deeply personal endeavor. His story highlights the importance of listening to one’s body, seeking professional guidance, and making lifestyle changes that align with personal goals and values. For Luke Combs, going gluten-free was not just about changing what he eats—it was about improving his mental resilience, building a stronger connection with his family, and laying a foundation for a healthier, more fulfilling life. His candid reflections on the challenges and rewards of this journey inspire others to take proactive steps toward their own well-being. As he balances fatherhood, career, and personal growth, Combs exemplifies how small but meaningful changes can have a transformative impact. For his fans and anyone facing similar struggles, his story is a testament to the power of perseverance, self-awareness, and love for family. Read more at: abcnews.go.com

Gwyneth Paltrow is set to launch a new organic gluten-free meal line with her famous trainer, Tracy Anderson. According to People Magazine, the new line will be called 3 Green Hearts. Celiac.com 09/28/2017 - The Gluten Intolerance Group of North America (GIG) is suing celebrity chef Jamie Oliver for using a logo on his gluten-free recipes that is similar to that of the GIG's Gluten-Free Certification Organization logo. Although there is no disagreement that Mr. Oliver's recipes are indeed gluten-free, a judge and jury may need to decide whether or not he is violating their trademark by using a similar graphic on his recipes. According to the Gluten-Free Certification Organization, its logo is now widely identified as the official gluten-free stamp of approval on gluten-free products. In the lawsuit the GIG claims that Mr. Oliver is purposely using their trademark on his online recipes to make it seem as though they've been certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization, which is not the case. The GIG also claims that this is misleading to consumers, and using the trademark in this manner could ruin their reputation. The GIG has asked Mr. Oliver to stop using his 'gluten-free' online labels, and will seek monetary damages in court if he does not comply. Source: tmz.com Gluten Intolerance Group of North America v. Celiac.com 02/07/2014 - Emmy-winning actor, Dan Bucatinsky, best known to his fans for playing journalist James Novak on the popular ABC drama "Scandal," just shared a little dietary secret. For more than ten years, Bucatinsky has lived with celiac disease, and relied on a strict gluten-free diet to remain healthy, and to thrive in his profession. Before the busy actor/writer realized that his eating habits and diet were making him sick, he says he had gotten used to not feeling great after every meal. He had grown used to suffering stomach cramps, and he simply ignored his own distress. In a phone interview with Healthy Hollywood, Bucatinsky explained how he was diagnosed with celiac disease right after his father's death. Even though he was overwhelmed at first with all of the hidden gluten in so many grocery items, Bucatinsky rose to the occasion and took action. "Once I knew that I had celiac disease, even if I didn’t feel any symptoms, I knew that inside my body was an autoimmune disease that had to be treated and I cleaned the gluten right out of my diet.” Source: Access Hollywood

Celiac.com 09/14/2012 - In other news, Lady Gaga is once again making waves in the gluten-free world with word that she is, in fact, adopting a gluten-free diet as she begins the next leg of her 'Born This Way Ball' tour in Sofia, Bulgaria. Word is that Gaga is going gluten-free as she seeks to drop ten pounds over the next month to make sure she is in the best shape for the grueling workout demanded by her tour. The 26-year-old singer is said to be keeping her carbohydrate intake to just two portions a week, choosing a diet mainly of fish, chicken and vegetables. A source close to reports that Gaga begun a major body make-over, which includes cut out all gluten and wheat from her diet. As a result she has given her people strict instruction to advise staff at venues and restaurants about her new diet because she is taking it very seriously. The source added: 'She allows herself one potato or rice portion a week and has been snacking on Ginnybake cakes from wholefood shops - they are gluten free cookies.' Despite claims to the contrary, there is no good evidence that a gluten-free diet causes weight loss; though there is good evidence that a gluten-free diet is good for people with celiac disease. In fact, for people without celiac disease, scientific evidence pretty much debunks the claim that a gluten-free diet helps regular folks lose weight. So, while celebrities, like Lady Gaga, may bring publicity to the gluten-free arena, it is unlikely that the more fad aspects of the gluten-free diet will have great benefits to people who do not have celiac disease, or gluten-intolerance. Celiac.com 07/07/2011 - With diagnosis for celiac disease and gluten intolerance growing by leaps and bounds, it's no wonder that the list of celebrities who eat gluten-free continues to grow as well. Like anyone else with celiac disease and gluten-intolerance, for celebrities and athletes who suffer from either condition, consuming gluten damages the lining of the small intestine and reduces absorption of important nutrients. People with celiac disease are more likely to have autoimmune disorders, Addison’s disease, Down syndrome, intestinal cancer, intestinal lymphoma, lactose intolerance, thyroid disease, and type-1 diabetes. In the United States, approximately 1 out of 133 people are diagnosed with celiac disease. A partial list of some noteworthy celebrities and athletes who reportedly follow a gluten-free diet due to celiac disease, gluten-intolerance, or other reasons include: news host Keith Olbermann, actor Billy Bob Thornton, Elizabeth Hasselback Katherine, Dutchess of Kent, news anchor Heidi Collins, actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Esposito, Goldie Hahn, Rachel Weisz, Zooey Deschanel, Susie Essman, Emmy Rossum, and Heidi Collins. Chelsea Clinton featured a noteworthy gluten-free offering at her wedding reception. Athletes include tennis stars Novic Djokovic, who attributes an unbeaten string of wins in part to a switch to a gluten-free diet. German tennis star Sabine Lisicki looks to bounce back after collapsing on the verge of a major upset at the French Open; a collapse she attributes to an undiagnosed gluten-sensitivity.

Celiac.com 05/02/2009 - Jesse James, the low-key celebrity biker and husband of star Sondra Bullock, led a gluten-free rally to survive yet another Donald Trump challenge on the Celebrity Apprentice recently. The second task of the night on the April 19th show was to devise a new dish along with a marketing campaign for the Schwan's frozen food LiveSmart line. Facing possible elimination of a team-member, the team led by Jesse James rallied with a gluten free noodle dish to stay alive for the May 10th final. The challenge to create and market Schwan's new dish saw Jesse James running the show at Athena. Jesse chose to keep teammate Melissa with him and put colleagues Brande and Annie to work in the kitchen. Jesse led the charge with a with the turkey meatball and gluten-free pasta suggested by team member and poker champ Annie Duke, leaving himself just enough room to put it on her had it failed. The meal features meatballs made with ground turkey breast meat and a touch of pork, and seasoned with onion, mushroom, garlic, spinach, basil. The meatballs are served up on a bed of Quinoa rotelle pasta and topped with a classic tomato basil sauce. A serving of tender 100% Grade A broccoli completes the meal. Now, Jesse's reticence regarding marketing nearly saw the team's effort fail, but the meal was solid and the execution went well. So when it came time to make a cut, Trump looked to the opposition's Herschel Walker, who had twice failed in his managerial duties.
