Celiac.com 05/08/2019 - As Dunkin' looks to rebrand itself as a destination for more than just donuts, it has begun to offer breakfast foods, like the Power Breakfast Sandwich that launched earlier this year. Starting today at participating restaurants nationwide, Dunkin' is offering two new breakfast bowls, the Egg White Bowl and the Sausage Scramble Bowl. And one question we've seen a lot, one thing many gluten-free eaters want to know is: Are Dunkin' Donuts Breakfast Bowls gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease? First, let's take a quick look at the products and their ingredients. The Egg White Bowl is made with egg whites, spinach, roasted potatoes, cheddar cheese and caramelized onions and delivers 14 grams of lean protein and 250 calories. The Sausage Scramble Bowl is made with scrambled eggs, sausage, melted cheddar jack cheese, peppers and onions, with 21 grams of protein and 450 calories. On the surface, these products list no gluten ingredients, so are they gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease? The answer is likely no. The first clue is the absence of any clear claim by Dunkin' about these products being gluten-free. No gluten-free label, then they're likely not gluten-free. So, are they gluten-safe, that is, are they products made with no gluten ingredients that might be safe for some people with celiac disease? The Dunkin' Donuts website makes no mention of gluten at all. Nor does the site mention the new breakfast bowls. The best a curious person can do is to try to find specific menu items, and look for the allergen information for each product. To do that, a user must click on Food & Drinks, then click Sandwiches & Wraps, then click any given menu item, then click on Customization & Nutrition for find allergen information. Here's a shortcut link to Dunkin' Donuts breakfast sandwiches. Even for items like breakfast sandwiches that clearly come on a bagel, or croissant, or an English Muffin, Dunkin' Donuts makes no mention of gluten. The simply stick with their standard disclaimer: "Please be advised that any of our products may contain, or may have come in contact with, allergens including Eggs, Fish, Milk, Peanuts, Shellfish, Soy, Tree nuts, and Wheat. Before placing your order, please inform your server if a person in your party has a food allergy." They use the same disclaimer even for products like has browns, that officially contain no allergens. Moreover, the site makes no mention of their breakfast bowls, and appears to have no allergen information on those items. The breakfast sandwiches are clearly not gluten-free and not safe for celiac sufferers. Even in the absence of clear allergen information, or gluten-free labels, it is reasonable to assume that the new breakfast bowls are not gluten-free, and not safe for people with celiac disease. Dunkin’ Bowls are available now at participating Dunkin’ restaurants nationwide for a limited time only. However, if you're looking for a gluten-free guarantee, or if you have celiac disease, you'll probably want to look elsewhere for breakfast.

Celiac.com 08/06/2018 - Okay, so it’s not a gluten-free donut, but Dunkin’ Donuts has announced the debut of a gluten-free fudge brownie, the company’s first-ever gluten-free bakery product, that will be available in all of Dunkin's 8,500 US stores. A company statement said that Dunkin’ Donuts recognizes "the importance of providing alternative choices for people with dietary restrictions or who choose a gluten-free diet." Gluten-free food sales are projected to exceed $2 billion in sales by 2020, up 20% from 2015, according to industry research group Packaged Facts. Dunkin's gluten-free brownie is one of several new items the company is introducing, although it is the only one that is gluten-free. Other new non-gluten-free items include waffle-breaded chicken tenders, pretzel bites and ham and cheese roll-ups. All of these items are priced at $2 each, as part of the chain's new Dunkin' Run menu, which the company hopes will draw customers beyond the usual breakfast rush. The latest menu changes are all part of a concerted effort by the company to rebrand, including ditching the ”Donuts" part of its name in some new stores, reducing its food offerings, emphasizing its drink selections, and pursuing plans to double the number of stores. Gluten-free donut lovers may have to wait indefinitely for a genuine gluten-free Dunkin’ donut, but a reliable, readily available gluten-free brownie is a good start. This recipes comes to us from Melissa Boucher. 4 ½ cup gluten-free flour 1 ¾ cup sugar 7 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon cinnamon 3 eggs 2 teaspoons gluten-free vanilla 2 cup milk or water 1 cup oil Mix dry ingredients together. At medium speed beat eggs and vanilla. Add rest of wet ingredients. Add dry mixture. Makes about 2 dz. donuts. These freeze well and can be put in the microwave--80% power for 20-30 seconds.
  4. Celiac.com 07/15/2013 - For gluten-free Americans who love donuts, life just got a little bit better. That's because Dunkin’ Donuts has announced plans to offer gluten-free donuts and muffins in all its US stores by the end of the 2013. The Canton-based company field tested gluten-free products in a handful of locations around Boston and Miami, news of which generated considerable social media buzz. This news is certainly much heralded by many gluten-free eaters, so it will be interesting to see what the response is like, and how Dunkin' Donuts fares. Certainly, the timing is right, with the market for gluten-free goods continuing to see double digit growth, and predicted to top $6.6 billion by 2017. Moreover, a recent survey by market research firm The NPD Group, Inc. found about one in three American adults say they want to reduce or eliminate gluten from their diets. For many people, Dunkin’s wheat-free cinnamon sugar doughnut clocks in at 320 calories, compared to 260 calories in a regular glazed doughnut. The gluten-free blueberry muffin is 400 calories -- 60 calories less than the standard version. The company said the pastries will be packaged separately to avoid cross-contamination. Those who must eat gluten-free, and might want to grab a donut now and then, will be pleased to learn that Dunkin' Donuts says that each donut will be individually wrapped to prevent contamination.
  5. Celiac.com 02/10/2014 - Dunkin' Donuts is quietly ditching its much publicized, much anticipated campaign to introduce gluten-free donuts across the nation. Information is scant, as Dunkin' has not issued any official press release. Dunkin' Donuts did, however, release the following statement to Gluten-Free Living: "In 2013, we tested a gluten-free Cinnamon Sugar Donut and Blueberry Muffin in select markets. We are currently assessing the results of this test, as well as feedback from our guests and franchisees, and we do not have plans to launch these products nationally at this time. We are continuing to develop additional gluten-free products for future tests, and we remain committed to exploring ways to offer our guests gluten-free choices." Word is that the rollout was doomed partly by complaints about the quality of the gluten-free donuts Dunkin' was offering, among other issues. Celiac.com 10/02/2013 - The sad word has arrived that Sugar Shack Donuts at Leigh and Lombardy streets in Richmond, Virginia will no longer craft delicious gluten-free donuts and other gluten-free delights. Despite tremendous popularity, or, perhaps because of it, Sugar Shack Donuts has ended its vegan and gluten-free Specialty Sundays, and ceased making gluten-free doughnuts altogether. It seems that for every customer full of praise for Sugar Shack's gluten-free treats, there was another full of complaints about long lines and low inventory. Co-owner Ian Kelley says that for ever comment he got that his gluten-free creations were ‘the most amazing tasting things…ever,’” someone else would say ‘these are really good but I had to wait in line 45 minutes and could only get four of them.’” All of which helped to dampen the enthusiasm of co-owner Ian Kelley, and to kill Specialty Sundays. This news has left locals with a gluten-free sweet tooth wondering what their next option might be. One local option might be WPA Bakery in Church Hill, which serves gluten-free doughnuts made on dedicated equipment. Although a purist might point out that WPA’s doughnuts are baked, while Sugar Shack’s were fried. Either way, Sugar Shack's Specialty Sundays will be missed.   7. Celiac.com 02/01/2013 - In my opinion, donuts are right up there with beer and pizza among the beloved foods I missed most after going gluten-free. That said, there has been strong progress on developing delicious gluten-free beers, and gluten-free pizza is one of the hottest, fastest growing trends among pizza retailers. So, there is some relief on those two fronts. However, the delightful donut is one food I expected never to enjoy again, after going gluten-free. So, imagine my surprise and delight to learn that Dunkin' Donuts is testing gluten-free donuts at limited locations in southern Florida and the Boston area. There is currently no official word from Dunkin' Donuts on when they plan to expand their gluten-free offerings. An official statement from the company read, in part: "…we have received very positive feedback on the new products so far. We do not yet have a timeframe for potential national distribution.” Meanwhile, a south Florida franchisee has said that while the test is currently limited to a few stores, the company plans to expand it in February. According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness says that Dunkin' Donuts' gluten-free products will be individually wrapped and calls them "dangerously delicious." Dunkin' Donuts' efforts to break into the fast growing gluten-free market puts them in league with a number of other fast food chains seeking to add gluten free items to their menus, including Wendy's, Arby's, Domino's and Chick-Fil-A. Celiac.com 01/30/2014 - Why is Dunkin' Donuts taking so long to debut gluten-free versions of its famous treats? First came the whispers of test marketing and then the official announcement, but then…? For more than a year, donut lovers who avoid dietary gluten due to celiac disease or other conditions have been eagerly awaiting the chance to sink their teeth into a gluten-free donut from Dunkin'. For its part, the company seems intent on getting gluten-free right. They have spent a great deal of time, and I assume money, creating a reliable, safe gluten-free production and distribution chain. From source materials to dedicated gluten-free production facility to special production methods, to comprehensive training and service, Dunkin' looks to be taking its gluten-free donut rollout with the utmost seriousness. This recipes comes to us from Melissa Boucher. 1 cup sugar 1 ½ cup gluten-free flour mix 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon xanthan gum ½ teaspoon salt 1 ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 1 ¼ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon allspice ½ cup oil ( or ¼ c oil and ¼ c applesauce or pumpkin puree) 2 eggs 1 teaspoon gluten-free vanilla ½ cup buttermilk ½ cup boiling water Mix dry ingredients together. Add oil ( and fruit puree if reducing fat) and mix well. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well. Add buttermilk and water a little at a time to the mix. Bake in preheated donut maker coated with gluten-free cooking spray. Bake 3 minutes. These may also be baked in a sandwich maker--but bake 7 minutes. Chocolate donuts: Same as above but eliminate cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Add ½ c cocoa and follow above recipe.

This recipes comes to us from Melissa Boucher. 1 cup rice flour 2/3 cup potato starch flour 1/3 cup tapioca flour ¼ cup cocoa 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 ½ teaspoon xanthan gum 1 cup sugar ¼ cup sour cream 2 eggs ¾ cup buttermilk 2 tablespoons shortening Chill 2 hours. They are too sloppy to roll so make donut holes by dropping teaspoonfuls into 370 degree oil. Most will roll over when the bottom is cooked, but you may need to turn some. Drain on thick layer of paper towels.
  11. Originally by Betty Crocker and made gluten-free by Barbara Emch. Heat oil (3) to 375 degrees in a deep pan. Mix with wire whisk: 1 2/3 cup Bette Hagmans gluten-free mix (Use sweet rice flour) 1/6 cup soy flour 2 teaspoons xanthan gum 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoons nutmeg ½ cup sugar Add dry ingredients to the following in a large bowl and beat with dough hooks: 3 eggs ½ cup milk (use slightly less) Mix ingredients well then form into a ball and turn onto tapioca floured surface. Sprinkle more tapioca starch onto dough. Roll until ½ thick. Cut with donut cutter. With wide spatula slide donuts into hot oil. Fry 2-3 min on each side and remove with slotted spoon onto a large cookie sheet lined with paper towels. After frying donuts, fry donut holes and leftover dough. After they are cooled sprinkle with confectioners sugar or cinnamon sugar. Can be frozen and heated in microwave.
