  1. Ugh! I am here to just simply vent. Six weeks ago I experienced facial swelling, but no pain. I conducted a Google search and made an appointment with my dentist and a medical doctor. My dentist suspected a root canal gone bad (had one 20 years prior) and referred me to an Endodontist. The MD confirmed the diagnosis and added a sinus infection. Went on gluten-free antibiotics. The Endodontist attempted a re-treatment, but the root was cracked (blame celiac disease?). The tooth needed to be extracted. Then I got the flu (probably by going to see the MD). Six days of fever and I recovered. Had a appliance made to keep my teeth in alignment for a partial or implant after complete recovery (up to a year). My extraction went well. Bone grafting was done. A tough recovery because I could not take pain medications as I am allergic to them all (eye, face and throat swelling). I followed all follow-up care to the letter despite lots of pain. Infection set in. Am back on a third roundof antibiotics and now I have a cold. I am discouraged, to say the least. I am tired of pain and inflammation and not feeling good. The antibiotics are slowly doing their job. I am sure I will heal, but like healing from celiac disease, I am impatient. This is going to take months. Anyone else have tooth extraction issues?
  2. Our power was out so we went out to eat, and they friggin boiled the gluten-free pasta in the same water as all the other pasta (nice, huh? takes serious brains!), but then literally just after eating I began getting sick in the rage of a nasty stomach flu, aparently a strain coming from Sydney. Found myself in emergency twice I couldn't stop getting sick and became dehydrated. Finally starting to feel more energy. Tummy upset, to say the least. Still afraid to eat, but will get there soon. Simple broth and apple slices to start with. GLUTEN FREE. My questions surround how much more my body was taken down as a result of my immune system being compromised when I desperately needed it most. Hypothetically, as I don't expect a definitive answer per se.
  3. I used to be under the impression that celiac disease was a condition that arose when one was born. According to Dr. Fasano's more recent research, we now know that this is not the case. People can go 70 years tolerating gluten just fine before it causes problems. One of the things that has intrigued me is the recommendation to keep infants away from gluten until 4-6 months have lapsed. I believe this has to do with intestinal permeability allowing greater quantities of gluten to travel through thus making the immune system not cope well and thus resulting in it malfunctioning and destroying the gut and developing defective memory cells that will be there for the rest of their lives. I also often hear of people being diagnosed with celiac disease after a cold, flu or gastrointestinal infection. If this is the case, is it possible that avoiding gluten during a time of emotional stress or infection (and then re-introducing after fully recovering from the event) may prevent the onset of celiac disease? Let me know your thoughts.
  4. I was diagnosed with Celiac two weeks ago and have been following the diet without a problem. Last night I went out with a small group for a friend's birthday and ordered what I thought was a perfectly gluten-free meal, but after eating it was like I had the flu and was sicker than I had ever been before going gluten-free... Here's what I ate: Salad (romaine lettuce and dressing*) Steak (no seasoning, in a tomato sauce* with provolone cheese) Vegetables (steamed and served in butter with no seasoning) * = the chef said these were gluten-free items Before ordering I spoke with the waiter/manager about my condition and they seemed very knowledgeable about celiac and my needs. The restaurant was empty (I hear that's the best time for a celiac to eat out). My food was prepared separately and in a clean area with new utensils (I do not know this for sure, but that's what I was told).... Am I missing something?
  5. Hi All- I am currently recovering from my first stomach flu post diagnosis and eliminating gluten (~7 mo post dx); having all this free time has me wondering: Have you noticed a difference in your stomach flu recovery times pre and post gluten-free? Anecdotally, I seem to be having a harder time recovering from this virus than anything I experienced when I was eating gluten. It could very well just be the viciousness of this particular bug, but I am 10 days out from the onset of symptoms and am still feeling crummy (occasional nauseousness, little to no appetite flare in constipation). Does anyone else have an experience they would like to share? Do celiacs have longer recovery times as a rule of thumb? Thanks and best to you all -Laurie
