Celiac.com 06/27/2016 - With her gluten-free bakery "Jennifer's Way" facing a $43 million lawsuit from investors, including her own husband, British model Louis Dowler, former "Blue Bloods" star Jennifer Esposito has reportedly skipped town for an "undetermined amount of time" in Denmark. Esposito's investment partners filed their suit in March, alledging, among other things, that Esposito's bakery is failing, and that she redirected the company's website to her personal blog and told consumers the products couldn't be trusted. "Esposito has instilled and promoted a groundless and downright false sense of fear that the very same products with the same recipes, coming from the same facility, that she once stood behind, are now unsafe to consume," the lawsuit reads. Esposito was previously married to actor Bradley Cooper and engaged two more times before she married Dowler in 2014. In addition to the suit, she is now also in the process of divorcing Dowler, who is, as noted above, one of the investment partners who brought the suit against her. Esposito made headlines in 2012, when she was put on indefinite leave from the CBS show "Blue Bloods" after informing the network of her celiac disease diagnosis. According to Esposito's tweets: "CBS. . . PUT me on unpaid leave and has blocked me from working anywhere else after my doc said u needed a reduced schedule due to celiac." According to a statement by CBS, "Jennifer has informed us that she is only available to work on a very limited part-time schedule. As a result, she's unable to perform the demands of her role and we regretfully had to put her character on a leave of absence . . . Celiac.com 03/21/2016 - Claims, counterclaims and a lawsuit have engulfed the gluten-free empire of actress Jennifer Esposito, and the people suing her include her new husband, British model Louis Dowler. The former "Blue Bloods" star opened Jennifer's Way bakery in 2012, after being diagnosed with celiac disease. Her small business empire includes the bakery and an online business selling gluten-free bagels, cookies and rolls. The ex-wife of actor Bradley Cooper, Esposito is facing a $43 million lawsuit from her investment partners, who include Lawrence Wenner and David Drake, and her new husband, Dowler. The bakery remains open, but online sales flatlined, the lawsuit alleges, after the website was "hijacked" and redirected to the actress's personal blog. According to court documents, her business partners, Lawrence Wenner and David Drake sank $250,000 each into the business and then loaned $1 million to establish a commercial plant in Queens to bake and ship orders, in addition to the retail shop that sold products made on site. According to the investors, Esposito failed to transfer ownership of the East Village bakery to the newly formed company, Jennifer's Way Inc., and has been uncooperative, and publicly combative. Wenner and Drake allege they were unable to obtain a needed loan because Esposito refused to cooperate. As if a $43 million lawsuit isn't enough, things got even more exciting recently when, after making posts on Facebook to the effect that she could no longer vouch for the gluten-free status of the company's products, Esposito was served with a restraining order forbidding her from bad-mouthing the investors, according to the New York Post. Court documents charge that "Esposito has instilled and promoted a groundless and downright false sense of fear that the very same products with the same recipes, coming from the same facility, that she once stood behind, are now unsafe to consume." According to the Post, Esposito's lawyer has called the case baseless, and said the actress "was misled by her investors, and has done nothing wrong to warrant a lawsuit." Both sides are due in court in Suffolk County March 16. Whatever the outcome of the suit, Esposito's legal woes won't end there, as she declared in court papers that she has filed for divorce from Dowler, citing "cruel and inhuman treatment," among the grounds.   3. Celiac.com 11/14/2014 - Jennifer Lopez is our latest celebrity to tout the benefits of a gluten-free diet. Lopez began a dairy- and gluten-free vegan diet in April, and says it helped her shed an unwanted 10 extra pounds. Jennifer recently began incorporating some fish and chicken back into her diet, but remains dairy-free. Sources close to Lopez say that her current diet emphasizes vegetables, with protein added as needed. Sources close to Lopez report that, even though she is no longer 100 percent vegan, she still follows a largely vegan diet because “…even if you’re 70-80 percent vegan, it’s so much better having those vegetables, greens, and plant-based stuff.” Lopez began her initial push after being inspired by the 22-day vegan diet “cleanse” undertaken by Beyonce and Jay-Z in December 2013. In addition to a healthy, largely vegetarian diet, Lopez maintains her age-defying physique with rigorous workouts. Following a training regimen developed by Tracy Anderson, Lopez is joining the ranks of celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, and Kim Kardashian. Celiac.com 03/07/2014 - Our latest gluten-free celebrity news comes with word from eon line.com that actress Jennifer Esposito has sparked a bit of a dustup with Rachael Ray over an episode of Ray's 3 in the Bag that aired earlier this month on Food Network, in which Ray shared some favorite gluten-free recipes. Actress-turned-activist Jennifer Esposito called Ray out for failing to make any mention of celiac disease, and dubbed Ray's efforts a "wasted opportunity," for failing to mention celiac disease, gluten sensitivity or cross-contamination, adding: "Why be responsible?" Esposito also tweeted, "That would mean @rachaelray would have to understand what she is actually speaking about." Esposito also tweeted a link to a post in Gluten Dude's blog which slammed Ray. VIDEO: Get Jennifer Esposito's gluten-free pizza recipe! The former Blue Bloods star ended by tweeting: It's a shame that their r so many suffering at the hands of ignorance such as this." Celiac.com 11/09/2012 - From their position in the public eye, celebrities can often draw attention to worthy causes, and to advocate for awareness of those causes more effectively than people outside the media spotlight. After being diagnosed with celiac disease in 2008, actress Jennifer Esposito is on a gluten-free diet, and though she's still recovering from the damage to her small intestines, the 'Blue Blood' actress is emerging as a strong advocate for celiac awareness. Like so many others with celiac disease, Esposito suffered for many years with symptoms ranging from stomach upset, exhaustion, joint pain, sinus infections, dry skin and hair, panic attacks, depression, and back pain. In fact, nearly twenty years went by before she had a solid diagnosis. In a recent interview, Esposito told S. Z. Berg that she is still dealing with the "repercussions of improperly being diagnosed over the years." She points to a lack of awareness about the disease for consumers and that fact that only recently "is the medical field paying closer attention." In a line that may be familiar to many people with celiac disease, she points out the long struggle to fully recover, even after adopting a gluten-free diet, noting that even though "many of the stomach issues and other ailment start to subside," celiac disease is an autoimmune condition that requires daily attention. People with the disease, she says, must constantly be aware of what they eat and maintain a healthy lifestyle, along with healthy vitamin and mineral levels. She says that her recovery has been "a long journey... and one that I still am on. The severe panic attacks have subsided as well as the depression, but with one bad meal they are ready and waiting to come to the forefront." Her own struggles have left her "determined to educate and make people aware of the truth about this disease." Ultimately, Esposito had her celiac disease confirmed through blood test and biopsy, but in some ways, that was only the beginning of her challenges. She says she believes that the medical industry needs to focus on "treating the individual person, the whole person, body and mind and not about money and mass studies of a disease." She also bemoans what she calls the "one pill fits all mentality" of the medical profession, along with the fact that nutrition is something that gets addressed only after an individual has gotten diagnosed. She describes this as "negligence," and says that it has compounded the damage, and with it, her difficulties. "My life is dramatically different and my health is a struggle everyday," she says. To help others with their celiac disease struggles, Esposito has created a blog called Jennifer's Way. There, she hopes to help people learn more about celiac disease and share the struggles and triumphs of her journey toward wellness. Her blog includes tips, ideas, and advice on how to get started in this new life. I also share some of my favorite easy and good for you recipes that I've created. She's also founded Jennifer's Way Foundation for Celiac Education to help make sure that going forward there is proper education about this disease in addition to helping to generate awareness to help people live a healthy gluten-free life.
