  1. Celiac.com 10/14/2020 - We get more than a few question about peanut butter. Specifically, is peanut butter gluten-free, and safe for people with celiac disease? Peanuts are gluten-free, and with very few exceptions, most peanut butter is gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease. Most peanut butter contains nothing more than peanuts, oil, sweetner, and salt. That makes peanut butter gluten-free in its natural form. The same answer applies to commercial peanut butter. Plain, or chunky peanut butter is usually gluten-free. However, if any gluten is added afterward, then peanut butter will not be gluten-free. Certain added ingredients could mean hidden gluten. Most commercial peanut butter brands include sugar, while others include vegetable monoglycerides to prevent separation. Mostly, it's a matter of labeling. What people often really want to know it whether peanut butter not labeled gluten-free is safe. Many Peanut Butter Brands are Labeled Gluten-Free There are a number of manufacturers that label their peanut butter gluten-free. That means that they are having their products tested and in some cases even certified gluten-free. Obviously, peanut butter labeled gluten-free is the safest choice. But many peanut butters simply state that their products contain no gluten ingredients. These are likely okay. We get very few complaints about peanut butter. It's usually well tolerated by people with celiac disease who don't have a peanut allergy. Beware of Gluten in Peanut Butter Products Unless wheat or gluten ingredients are added, peanut butter is always gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease. However, a number of products package peanut butter with things like pretzels, that may not be gluten-free, so read packages carefully. Basically, any product containing pretzels, cookies, crackers, or the like should be examined carefully. Read labels and watch out for hidden gluten. What about commercial peanut butter you buy in the store? Some commercial peanut butters are now labeled gluten-free. Most commercial peanut butters label any allergens, including wheat. However, many brands do not label their peanut butter as gluten-free, and many unlabeled peanut butters may be made on equipment that processes wheat, rye or barley. That's not necessarily a big deal, but some people like to play it safe. These brands go the extra mile to make sure their peanut butters are labeled "Gluten-Free." That means that you can breath extra easy about serving them to people with celiac disease. Top Gluten-Free Peanut Butter Brands (Ingredient Label Includes "Gluten-Free"): Crazy Richard's Crazy Richard's peanut butter contains just peanuts—with no added salt, oils, or sugars, and are are certified gluten-free. Jif Jif makes gluten-free and non-gluten-free products. Both are likely fine, but the gluten-free version is tested and certified gluten-free. Justin's Justin's makes a variety of flavored nut butter products, including classic peanut butter and honey peanut butter that are certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). Krema Nut Company Krema is made by the same company that makes Crazy Richard's. Like Crazy Richard's, Krema's classic creamy or crunchy peanut butter is gluten-free. MaraNatha Website confirms MaraNatha peanut butter contains only peanuts, and are certified gluten-free. PB Crave All five flavors of PB Crave peanut butter are gluten-free: Honey and Sea Salt, Chocolate, Raspberry and White Fudge, Cookie Dough, and Banana. Reese's Both the Creamy and Chocolate flavors of Reese's Peanut Butter Spread are gluten-free. Santa Cruz Organic Website’s FAQ states that all Santa Cruz Peanut Butter contains only peanuts and salt, and is certified gluten-free. Skippy According to the brand's FAQ, all varieties of Skippy peanut butter are gluten-free. Smart Balance The Smart Balance peanut butter comes in creamy and chunky, both fortified with omega-3s and flaxseed oil. Smart Balance products are gluten-free, according to the brand FAQ. Teddie Teddie peanut butter comes in in old-fashioned, organic, homogenized, salt-free, and flaxseed varieties, and in creamy, chunky, and super-chunky textures. According to a company statement, all Teddie peanut butter is gluten-free. Peanut Butter with No Gluten Ingredients (Not Labelled "Gluten-Free"): Adams Adams varieties are made with just peanuts and salt, except the no-stir peanut butter, which contains vegetable monoglycerides from palm oil, to prevent separation. According to the company, the products contain no gluten ingredients. Goober Goober products contain no gluten-containing ingredients. Peter Pan Peter Pan peanut butter comes in creamy, crunchy, whipped, natural, honey-roasted, and reduced-fat varieties. The company's FAQ states that: "All varieties of Peter Pan Peanut Butter are made without adding any potential gluten-containing ingredients such as wheat, rye, barley, and oats." Parent company Conagra states that any wheat or gluten ingredients will be declared as allergens on the label. Smuckers In addition to making Adams, Jif, and Goober products, Smuckers also sells natural and organic peanut butter under its own name. The J.M. Smucker Company states that it labels products "gluten-free" when the products test to fewer than 20 ppm gluten and it's been verified that the products ingredients don't contain gluten.
  4. Okay so I had a peanut butter milkshake from steak n shake last night. I'm nearly positive that every thing else I've had recently has been gluten free. I have been feeling like my stomach is acting up a bit lately, but after this milkshake it is so much more intense. I considered maybe I'm sensitive to dairy too, but in the last few days I've had plenty of dairy that didn't make me react like this. The steak n shake website didn't list any real specifics on ingredients for milkshakes. I read in other forums that some shakes use a malt mix or syrup ( which I didn't see mentioned on the site), but it is corn based. I called the my local steak n shake and the guy said he is "pretty sure" it's corn based. I called the customer service line and they couldn't tell me if it was gluten free or not. I found ONE listing on a website that said all shakes were gluten free expect peanut butter and one other flavor. I know this seems like a lot for one shake, but I'm so tired of not knowing what makes me sick. Has anyone else had an experience with this or has anymore knowledge about steak and shakes products?
