  1. Does anyone know of any really good restaurants in SF that are gluten free/celiac friendly. We all know SF has a great food, but what about the ones that cater to us?
  2. Celiac.com 08/02/2017 - Dressing up a pork chop is one of the easiest ways to turn a simple meal into a memorable one. These pork chops use sweetened soy sauce and beef broth to deliver big flavor. They are easy to make and sure to please. Ingredients: 4 boneless pork chops, trimmed 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced ¼ cup gluten-free beef broth ¼ cup gluten-free soy sauce 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 teaspoons vegetable oil ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes 2 teaspoons cornstarch Black pepper, to taste Directions: Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown chops in hot pan for about 5 minutes on each side. Remove browned chops to a plate. Keep the oil in the skillet, stir in the garlic, and cook about 1 minute, until fragrant. Whisk beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, and red pepper flakes in a bowl until the brown sugar is dissolved. Return pork chops to skillet and pour soy sauce mixture over the chops. Bring sauce to a boil, cover skillet, and reduce heat to low. Simmer chops until tender, 20 to 25 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking. Transfer chops to a serving platter. Whisk cornstarch and water in a small bowl until smooth; stir into pan juices and simmer about 5 minutes, until the sauce thickens. Pour sauce over chops to serve. Top with black pepper as desired.

For anyone who likes to push their body to the extreme and then sit down with friends and revel in the suffering, there is Sufferfest. Sufferfest beer was created by lifelong athlete, and gluten-intolerance sufferer Caitlin Landesberg to capture the feeling of accomplishment and comradery that followed the sufferfest that was her first endurance race, Marin’s notorious Double Dispea. Brewed with the same competitive approach Landesberg brought to trail running and endurance events, Sufferfest is a gluten-removed beer designed for athletes who love to bond over moments of post-race elation that come with surviving extreme exertion. Landesberg brews a traditional full barley, malt-based beer, and uses Brewers Clarex, an enzyme that promotes clarity and stabilization, and reduces gluten levels to below 10ppm. According to their website, "Sufferfest beer is fermented from grains containing gluten and crafted to remove gluten. Our finished beer is analyzed in a lab that uses best-in-industry R5- Gliadin ELISA assay and registers at the lowest detection limit possible, ensuring that only trace amounts of gluten are present."   4. Celiac.com 12/16/2016 - Gluten-free news is everywhere, but so is fake news. Thanks to someone's sense of humor, the two collided recently, when signs recently appeared inside San Francisco buses, declaring: THIS IS A GLUTEN-FREE BUS. Riders of San Francisco's buses may have seen these and other tongue-in-cheek ads, including signs that read: CHEESEBURGERS AND LIQUOR UPON REQUEST No, you cannot actually get cheeseburgers or liquor on the bus, or any MUNI bus in San Francisco. Nor is the bus in any way gluten-free. The signs sport the wry Twitter hashtag #MUNIFACTS Sometimes fake news, and satire sites make it easy, and sometimes they make it harder to discern the truth of the claim. These pranksters seem to be having a good time doing the latter, as witnessed by another sign that read: FARES MAY BE PAID BY CASH, CLIPPER, OR MAGIC BEANS. So, if you're lucky enough to see one of these, be sure to smile, because that seems to be the culprit's main intent. Read more at: SFIST.COM

I'm trying to find a decent place to get an endoscopy for celiac -- I had a highly recommended doctor at Kaiser, but am now on Anthem Blue Cross, and an endoscopy is very expensive at UCSF where my GI doctor recommended it. It can be 10,000$ without insurance, would still be $2000 with my great no-deductible EPO plan! Other places seem to be much cheaper (as low as $1000, which would end up costing me $200). But I have no idea if they are reputable and competent at celiac diagnosis (all I have is the the occasional yelp review, usually for a colonoscopy...). Do you have any recommendations? Or know someone who might, who I can private message? I can check to see if they are covered by my insurance. For reference, it's important that the doctors be pretty competent -- my previous endoscopy was negative, but my ttg tests are 4x normal and going up every time I'm tested -- so I want to have confidence that I won't get a false negative!
