  1. Hey-- After Pres. Clinton's comment on Rachel Ray's show about eating gluten free granola, I know a bunch of us were wondering if he had celiac. Good Morning America reported to today that Chelsea Clinton's wedding cake is going to be gluten free, so I think that pretty much confirms that he does. Just thought that I'd pass along the news that another...
  2. Hi-- I am on continuous birth control for a long list of female issues, and I have been spotting heavily on a daily basis for over a month. Around the same time, and then again two weeks ago, I ate gluten and I have yet to fully recover. I have been malnourished (I am not absorbing potassium and getting charlie horses) and was wondering if my birth control...
  3. I know this is an old post, but I found this great article with information about gluten free wedding cake options and ideas that I thought I would share: Open Original Shared Link
  4. Hi guys- I always entertain at my house. If people ask me what to bring, I tell them bring something to drink because I have control of the food. This is what I made last weekend: Open Original Shared Link People loved it and it was cheap and gluten free!
  5. You hit it on the head, unfortunately. For wheat I get sick right away. But barley (and now oats) hits me the next day. Ugg.. they are not safe.
  6. Hey everyone, I took a really early flight this morning, and without thinking I grabbed Quaker oatmeal to eat at the hotel buffet before I left. I bothered to check to see if it contained wheat, but at 5 in the morning the fact that celiac is more than wheat didn't sink in . After this I was expecting to get sick, but am showing no symptoms, normal...
  7. Just to update anyone moving to DC, here is what I found-- In Georgetown: SweetGreen, Qdoba, Chipotle, 5 Guys, and the Tombs were my staples. The Tombs is amazing with allergies, I highly recommend it. The same people (I think) own Clydes, so I am sure they would be easy too. In Rosslyn/Court House: Silver Diner, Pho 75, Baja Fresh, California Tortilla...
  8. I go to a Jesuit university, and have talked to priests and lay catholics about the best options to receive without appearing to be different. When I am at school, I watch to see which chalice the priest places the host in (although most of the priests don't seem to place it in any of the chalices, they hold it over it and then eat it). Then I wait in line...

    ARCHIVED Eating Out

I completely understand about just wanting to be normal and go out with friends, as well as the dating issue. My advice is to assume that people are stupid and don't care. Thus, find 2 or 3 great places that are naturally gluten free with low cc risk. This means 0 special ordering, or, if you must, "no bun" or "no toast". For me this is a Vietnamese restaurant...
  10. I am flying to the Honduras in a few months, and I need advice. I have flown and traveled a ton since being dxed and never had a problem, but I was wondering if anyone knew what the international restrictions were on bringing food into a foreign country are. I was going to pack a couple of cases of Lara bars and other pre-packaged food to hold me over when...
  11. Hello everyone! I just found out I got accepted to go on a service trip to Honduras in March, which I am so excited about. The first question from all of my relatives was about food. Because of where we'll be staying, I can't expect them to have food for me (if they do, it'll be a coincidence). Does anyone know if you can bring prepacked food (like...
  12. Hello, I just found out that I will be moving to Washington, DC in the summer for at least 2 years, but probably longer. I will be spending most of my time at/near Georgetown U, but I will be most likely living in Virginia or Maryland. Does anyone have any experience in eating on Georgetown's campus or the surrounding area, or any recommendations...
  13. I saw this in today's paper. Open Original Shared Link What do you all think?
  14. I completely get the crankiness... I still get cranky when I think about it. Here is my advice: - cravings go away if you are completely gluten free. They are horrible for the first month. Especially the smell of pizza and brownies (I have been known to start crying at the smell of pizza). However, you will get through them and it gets easier - the...
  15. Here is my guidelines of what to eat when I am out of the house: -non-fried Tortilla chips -salsa -fruit and veggies -cheese -M&Ms - salad w/o croutons or salad dressing -baked potato - hard boiled eggs -plain coffee -Pepsi or Coke -wine -unflavored vodka Foods to avoid: - anything that has more than 5 ingredients - anything that...

    ARCHIVED Ivillage

I saw this and got curious. Surprisingly it described me to a T (other than that I was much older). Open Original Shared Link
  17. I agree with what was said above. I found out that I had gluten issues 10 days before I started a 50 hours a week job and had to start cooking for myself for the first time. My advice is to keep it super simple. For the first month all I ate was whole foods that were super simple (cheap and easy to cook). I would only eat things that either said gluten free...
  18. My only problem is after I give blood. They won't let me leave until I eat something or wait 30 minutes (and generally don't get that I'm not anorexic, I can't eat the cookies, and that I physically can see my lunch). Waiting for 30 minutes staring at my lunch does not make me a very happy camper...

    ARCHIVED Chinese Food

You never really know-- rarely are the ingredients in English. What I normally get is steamed chicken and broccoli with no sauce and white rice. If you add a little lemon juice it isn't bad-- boy do I miss good takeout!
  20. I have heard that the weight watcher's core diet works well with celiac, but I have never used it. What I know works is below. Everyone in my office lost weight (about 2lbs per week for a total of 20-40lbs lost., It doesn't have the social support that other plans do, but it will help you lose weight and works 100% fine with those with gluten issues....
  21. I have good news and bad news-- the good news is the cravings do go away. Especially if you stay away from your former favorite foods. The bad news is that gluten in an integral part in making certain foods taste good. Especially processed baked goods. You will never find a cookie without gluten that tastes as good as an oreo. However, if you wait few months...
  22. I would stick to: fresh, frozen, and canned fruits and veggies Hormell Chili (or make your own. Let me know if you want my recipe) peanut butter (to dip fruit in for breakfast) plain yogurt (flavor with brown sugar and raisins. I believe Yoplait may label theirs as gluten free) cheese plain meats and fish McCormick seasonings rice-- very easy to...
  23. I helped my entire office lose weight this summer on this diet. It is really simple, and cheap. Plus they all dropped a lot of weight. All you have to do is: - Drink at least 64 oz of water every day, with at least 8 oz before a meal or a snack - have at least 7 servings of fruits and veggies - get at least 25 grams of fiber a day from non-grain food...
  24. When you are first starting to cook gluten-free, stick to the basics. It is best for your stomach and your wallet. What I ate was: Breakfast: eggs, gorilla munch cereal, banana and peanut butter, or apples and almonds Lunch: I normally made soup on Sunday and froze it for the rest of the week. Here are the recipes: Veggie Soup In a large pot...
  25. Depending on how much debt you have and your credit level, your best bet might be one of those 0% apr for 6 months cards. This only works if you can pay off all of the debt in the grace period, but it does help! The other thing is to call the company and ask if you can have the rate lowered. A lot will just for asking.
