  1. I'm thinking about participating in a clinical trial for the new experimental celiac disease drug by Alba Therapeutics AT-1001 (a.k.a larazotide acetate). From what I've read, it appears that the drug is not supposed to be a substitute for a gluten-free diet, but would be useful for protecting us from a small amount of gluten in the case of cross-contamination...

    ARCHIVED I Hate Kaiser!

Yep, sorry I failed to specify in my signature. I'll change it now, thanks. For a little clarification on my diagnosis, a non-Kaiser ear nose and throat doctor gave me a dx of acid reflux, but when I switched to Kaiser, they let me see a couple of ped. g.i. docs and they discovered that I didn't have reflux, but did have celiac disease. It was all rather...

    ARCHIVED I Hate Kaiser!

In defense of Kaiser... Yes I'll admit that those stories are really awful, and it's really easy to generalize, but I do know quite a few g.i. docs there who do have good people/listening skills. I know because I worked there this summer and am now a volunteer, and because I also happen to be a patient there as well. However, the problem is that the...
  4. Hey Beth, welcome to the club . To answer your questions the blood tests you listed are all a part of what the docs like to call the celiac blood panel. The Endomysial Ab IgA screen just tells you if your blood is positive or negative for this antibody, and I believe the titer tells the doctors something about the actual concentration of it. Tissue Transglutaminase...
  5. Hey there fellow University of California freshman. I'm going to UC Irvine, but I still wanted to say hi. I wish you lots of luck, and if you can't find another celiac to room with at least try to find someone who would be understanding, like for instance, someone with maybe a different type of food intolerance/allergy, or just someone who's really nice...
  6. Hey I'm an incoming freshie too. I know public schools are required to accomodate special diets, so, like everyone else has been saying, ask dining services. I know at UC Irvine they have all the students with special dietary needs meet and plan with the cooks and such. Communication is key. Does your school require a dining meal plan for freshman? Mine...
  7. Your right, that must be awful, many sympathies. Oh and as for the hotdogs, I know Hebrew National beef franks and Oscar Mayer hotdogs are gluten-free along with many others just do a search for gluten-free hot dogs. Double check though cause some varieties of the two above brands I named may/may not all be gluten-free. As for cookies, those are hard, but...
  8. Careful with the rice crispies, I know the snap, crackle, pop brand is not gluten-free. Clif Bar Nectars and Lara Bars are amazing. The trail mix idea's fantastic. Chocolate and nuts are especially good for avoiding plummeting blood sugar, fruits and veggies are good too. Have fun, I think that's awesome that your doing this.
  9. Haha, this thread makes me smile because I'm really obsessive about gluten too (among a number of other things)! It's hard not to be. I guess it can be a good thing cause it's kept me accident-free (at least to the best of my knowledge) since my dx. Yeah and I love what jesscarmel wrote; I tend to have quite a bit of anxiety too. However, I don't think...
  10. ditto Please ask your doctor! I really don't think online forums are a good place for medical advice even if it is celiac related. It might be something serious or it might be as simple as reflux. The thing is, we don't know, only a physician can tell you, and I wouldn't automatically assume that it is food intolerance related, possible, but you never...
  11. I totally can relate to what your going through. It's not so much the food as it is the social principle behind it all. I recently had an emotional blow up after coming home from a school-related party. It was so frustrating because I hadn't had time to make something to bring that I could eat. I had to explain to like ten people why I wasn't eating....
  12. Hey I'm also a newbie (sorta-2 months) with sore throat as a symptom. That's actually what triggered the long chain of events that led to my diagnosis. However, because I don't think I've eaten anything with gluten in it since going gluten-free I don't really know for sure if it's an actual reaction to the gluten. My throat just has this weird chronic...
  13. Thank you for the hope. I've only been gluten-free for a little over 2 months, so I still have some time to go. Too bad toenails take so long to grow. I was wondering if it could go away on its own after a while without gluten, so I guess now I know it's possible. As far as prescription oral drugs like Lamisil go, I heard they can have some pretty nasty...
  14. OK so maybe this isn't something anyone would want to admit to but I'm just curious. Does anyone else have nail fungus? I read that people with celiac disease are more succeptible to fungal infections so I just had to ask. I've had a problem with mild toenail fungus for a couple of years now. It's so frustrating because the topical over-the-counter stuff...
  15. Thank you for your encouragement, and wow, I never knew dairy intolerance could cause a sore throat. I was beginning to wonder if I might have any troubles with dairy or other foods because I know that this is really common in people with celiac disease. I've also been noticing that rich dairy foods (e.g. milk chocolate, ice cream, and straight milk) tend...
  16. Hello, I'm brand new and this is my first post. I was wondering if there might be anyone out there who can understand or relate to my story. Well it all began with a sore throat. I've been a singer for as long as I can remember, but a few years ago I developed this awful chronic sore throat that would get worse from singing. My sophomore year in high...
