ARCHIVED Favorite Gluten Free Treats?
frec replied to solarglobe's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have trouble with corn too, but only corn as a main ingredient. I can do corn starch or corn syrup. I like Snapeas, guacamole, refried beans, hummus, nuts, and anything with peanut butter on it. -
ARCHIVED Lumbar Facet Arthritis
frec replied to num1habsfan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've had back problems for six years, starting with a herniated lumbar disk that didn't improve and then turning into facet joint problems with SI joint instability. The only thing that really improved things was prolotherapy. You might want to read up on it--just google prolotherapy. There isn't enough research on it--drug companies don't fund research... -
Could he be allergic to some environmental allergen? Since you are in a cold climate now with the furnace going dust or dust mites seem the most likely. Or is there a food you didn't eat much of in the Philippines and now are eating more in Canada? Hope he feels better soon.

ARCHIVED Celiac And Learning Disability Symptoms
frec replied to beachbel's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm an elementary teacher. I've never read anything connecting learning disabilities and celiac disease. But a lot of people on this forum mention feeling fuzzy headed when they eat gluten. It can also cause fatigue, depression, anxiety, sleep problems, etc. I don't know what your son's symptoms were before he went on the diet, but I would think that spending... -
I have osteoporosis--lots of celiacs do--and I have been trying to find information on options for treatment. I don't like the sounds of the bisphosphonates but that is often all the doctors offer. Here is some really excellent information, including a calculator you can use to estimate your risk if you know your T score. The site is written by a medical...

ARCHIVED Questions For All Those Who Have Ever Had Fibromyalgia
frec replied to nasalady's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also developed fibromyalgia six years after being diagnosed with celiac disease. During those years I had a back injury, I was the sole caregiver for my chronically ill mother, and three members of my family died. Stress can trigger a lot of diseases, and I think it set off my fibromyalgia. I am very fortunate--I work full time and I am fairly active... -
Sorry--I didn't know anyone was writing on this thread until today. I saw Nicole in October and I remember I did have quite a time communicating with her office. Once she and I got on email we did fine. I was diagnosed 6 years ago and went to her to consult on why my antibody levels were still positive, so the focus of my visit was a bit different. She...

Are you still eating dairy? A lot of people with celiac disease lose the ability to digest dairy because the enzymes are produced in the (healing ) villi in the small intestine. Some people, especially older people, never get the enzymes for dairy back. I was diagnosed at 46 and never could eat dairy again. Are you taking a probiotic? Acidophilus...

ARCHIVED Keratosis Pilaris
frec replied to missmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The gluten-free forum scores again! After reading this thread I did a bit more research and by golly, I think you've diagnosed the mystery rash I've had for 8 months. (My dermatologist just said, oh, yeah, a rash...that'll be $200) Here I've been changing soaps and lotions and worrying about a Candida flareup and just below the radar glutenings (though... -
On Sunday during the worst of the storm an overloaded tree split and came down on my classroom. The roof is leaking like crazy. Fortunately our building engineer was there (because of the power outage--the man is a saint.) and managed to tarp and board everything up. He also moved all my teacher books which were, of course, directly under the leak. I...

ARCHIVED Oh My God I Feel So Bad, Stress, Sad, Angry, Etc
frec replied to dogle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I want to second what jlinc said--start taking vitamin D3. Most celiacs are short on vitamin D--as a matter of fact they are finding that a lot of people are. It helps depression--really helped mine-- and your immune system. And--especially if you are female--start taking calcium and magnesium. Celiacs run short on those too. Hang on. I was kind of... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do When You Receive Cookies And Cakes As Gifts?
frec replied to Amyleigh0007's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm a teacher and I've had the same problem for years. I always saved treats to "eat after school" and took things home to my neighbors. But this year I have a student with serious nut allergies. We've had to really be careful. I keep an Epipen in the room. She can't even eat next to anyone who has nuts. We have to scrub everyone's desks after lunch,... -
ARCHIVED I Really Wanted To Make A Mini Bio To See If Someone Would Relate
frec replied to mr. moore's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Make sure you take some vitamin D3. A lot of people are deficient in vitamin D, especially celiacs, and it helps with depression. It really helped mine. It also helps your immune system. Check out vitamincouncil.org for some information if you'd like. It is kind of hard giving up everything all at once. I still eat rice bread toast with fruit spread... -
ARCHIVED Still Having Leg Pains, When Will They Go Away?
frec replied to LoisArbuckle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't take a multivitamin because I can never find the combination I want--everything is separate. I take BCDK sometimes A and calcium/magnesium. You have to be awfully careful about reading labels. You might google multivitamin on this forum and see what people have mentioned. There is a gluten free vitamin section on this website, over on the left margin... -
I'm a redhead! But the other celiacs I know are 2 blondes and 3 brunettes. It would be interesting to know if there's a correlation.

ARCHIVED Malabsorption - Celiac Disease = Catastrophe Living
frec replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had trouble with malabsorption. Are you on probiotics? They help heal your intestines and help with diarrhea/constipation too if you're having it. Make sure they are dairy free. I assume you are off dairy? If your intestines haven't healed yet you can't digest it. Vitamin D3 has helped me a lot. I get a B complex and magnesium shot every... -

ARCHIVED Still Having Leg Pains, When Will They Go Away?
frec replied to LoisArbuckle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I want to reiterate what several others said. Because of the intestinal damage (which can take up to a year to heal) you haven't been absorbing nutrients. Were you tested to check for any deficiencies? Anyway, most newly diagnosed types need calcium, magnesium, D3, and B12 at the very least--and all of those can be helpful for leg pain--cramping or nerve... -
You really can still travel. I've been to Hawaii, England, and the Galapagos since I was diagnosed. I'll admit, trying world cuisine does not work out too well! (Mostly I eat chicken, vegetables, and fruit--but hey, I don't gain weight on vacation and everyone else does!) I really wanted to eat Cornish pasties and have scones with clotted cream...but I...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Recovery Tips?
frec replied to fringfring's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The only good thing I can say is at least you caught the disease early, before you caused even more damage (read the bios on this website--whew). Because you are relatively young you will heal faster, especially because you are doing so many good things. As my naturopath said, what other disease forces you to eat all the right things and thus reduces your... -
Be careful of dairy. Sometimes the intestinal damage from celiac destroys your ability to digest dairy for a while. Some people are unaffected and some people are never able to eat dairy again. It depends on how long it took to be diagnosed and how well you heal (usually the younger you are, the better you heal) Sometimes the doctors forget to tell you...

ARCHIVED Thaksgiving Menu / Multiple Allergies
frec replied to codetalker's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have also found that taking Betaine HCl really helped with reflux and slow digestion. I started with a really small dose and worked up until I got heartburn, then went back down a little. I take digestive enzymes as well. I avoid all the stuff on the reflux list (except chocolate, but I don't eat it at night) and stay up three hours after eating. That... -
ARCHIVED What Soap And Shampoo Do You Use?
frec replied to frec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I never checked my skin products--after all, the doctors say not to worry about it!--until I had a huge reaction once to some makeup. I didn't have a problem with it until I used it to try to cover up some acne. Since my skin was raw it must have absorbed the wheat more. My acne got worse, so I used even more of it. Once my face swelled up like a balloon... -
ARCHIVED What Soap And Shampoo Do You Use?
frec replied to frec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh dear. I've given up nightshades, soy, and sugar just in the past year; I don't think I even want to investigate the effects of amines right now! I just looked them up and practically all my main foods are on the list: peanuts, bananas, avocado, chocolate...I eat bananas and some kind of nuts every day. I think I'll mess around with soaps first. But... -
ARCHIVED What Soap And Shampoo Do You Use?
frec replied to frec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow! People on this forum are so nice. I am taking notes. Toiletries cost so much; I have cupboards full of partially used stuff I reacted to. And it is hard to know if I am reacting to gluten or to some other ingredient. I appreciate your helping me narrow things down a bit. Thank you. I found out recently that my deodorant now has barley malt!...
