Healthy Me

Mosaics

Everyone got sick but me. My husband got sick and threw up all X-mas night. I was afraid it was something I cooked, but that couldn't have been it because no other family member or guest got sick. I had a little of everything and I didn't get sick. So then I was really worried that it was a virus and that I was going to get it. I hate throwing up worse than anything. I end up sleeping on the bathroom floor. There is something familiar and comforting about laying on a hard, cold, bathroom floor all night, covered with my robe and freezing anyway. Weird, I guess, but maybe it's because I threw up so often as a child. My mother would tell us children that if we got sick and didn't make it to the bathroom in time, then we'd have to clean up the puke ourselves. Nice, huh?

Well, I can understand that after having my own kids and having to clean up their puke a few times. I got wise, though, and instituted the "barf bucket". Whenever they got sick, they had their barf buckets next to them - no dashing to the toilet, no sleeping on the bathroom floor, no puke to clean up. Was that so hard, Mom?

Anyway, I digress. I didn't get the stomach virus.

New Year's Eve, I arrived home from my party, to the party that my daughter was having at my house. My son's voice was hoarse, so I knew he was coming down with something. He ended up having a mild cold for a few days. Then my husband and daughter got it - a worse case, and they had to take antibiotics. They are just now getting over it.

Despite the fact that my husband frequently coughed in my face at night and he handled the remote control with the same hands he blew his nose with...I didn't get it!

I haven't had a cold or upper respiratory illness since I've been on the gluten-free diet. Almost three years now.
